1598 Tasting Notes
Woo! First tasting note for this tea! (i.e., no pressure?)
This wasn’t on the website so we weren’t prepared for this tea when we came in to the shop. We leaned in to smell it and the aroma overpowered our senses and intoxicated us. We all had to have some. Or most of us.
“And, how is it?” you might ask. Or probably are, seeing as you are reading this on Steepster.
It’s great. It’s warm, and cinnamony and comforting, and the strawberry is sweet while the rhubarb is tart and sweet. It’s very nice. I keep expecting a bit of pastry in there too, but it’s not fair to compare it to Butiki’s Ruby Pie. It never pretended to be more than Strawberry Rhubarb, and it delivered.
ETA: A minute or so after my last cup, and I notice that the rhubarb just lingers in my mouth. I thought it was the dreaded astringency I hate so much, but it was just slightly tart and slightly sweet rhubarb. :D
Preparation
This was a sample from Jessiwrites that I was interested in, then wasn’t and then it sat for about 3 months and now I’m trying it.
It’s surprisingly good? I was afraid it would be boring, but mate does have an interesting je ne sais quoi to it. Can’t describe it. It is a bit smokey though, as jessiwrites described, although I don’t mind that. It’s not overwhelming and it helps wake me up.
Also I threw that in there like a pro! All those years of college french – you weren’t a complete waste! (I forgot a lot…)
Sipdown!
Following up Butiki’s PTA with this was a great idea. Even with all that caffeine, I’m still feeling drowsy. Maybe I can get this baby to sleep in the next 15 minutes so that we can sleep for 2 hours before people come over to view our suite (so they can rent it).
I slept for about 3.5 hours this morning and then the baby woke up. I changed her, gave her a bottle and tried to get her back to sleep but we basically just fought for the next hour and a half until I just gave up at 5:30. She’s so obviously tired, but just kept tossing and turning and wouldn’t stay down – it’ll be easier when she can talk and tell me what’s keeping her up. :P
So, I was super grumpy and thought I needed more of this! It’s so delicious and sweet – it feels like quite the indulgence sometimes. I’m so sad that I only have enough for 4 cups. I think I overleaf because my Butiki bags say that it’s good for “X” cups and I never seem to get that many. It’s probably because I just enjoy those teas so much I don’t keep track of how often I drink them.
I have some Caramel Assam waiting for me at Sil’s. That, and the last of this, will have to keep me going until Black Friday!
I talked to Stacy at Butiki about their X cups recommendation. They use a level teaspoon (baking measure) to do those. This explains why I never even come close to getting that number. I seem to use at least twice as much leaf as Stacy, but I also tend to use a 12 or 14 oz mug so that explains some of it.
So I asked for recs because I knew I was going to Granville Island and OMGSrsly told me that THIS was the one to get. And I listened.
Then I came home and read her reviews and… Umm… “This tea is something I should hate”, and “Oh yeah. This tea won’t be getting a great rating from me even though I repurchased 100g today. I’m really undecided about it because it is everything I dislike, yet it’s so refreshing I keep drinking it. Weird, I know.”
Hahaha. It’s a good thing I didn’t read that first!
I am enjoying it – it reminds me of Lemon Chiffon, without being creamy. It’s just lemon, a little bit of creaminess, and a little bit of zing (from the orange peel?). I’m halfway through my 50g now, so… I may re-stock before I move! More bedtime options are always nice, and the baby might like this too if I iced it.
It was also pretty cheap too. I think maybe $4 for 50g? I think that’s good.
Preparation
LOL I know, they’re terrible reviews! Yet I keep drinking the tea. I’m almost out of my 100g now, but I think I’ll save my tiny tea budget for something else this time. I can always go back to Granville Island!
That totally makes sense! I think most of my tea budget is going to Bayswater. And I won’t even bother with O5, but if we go in, I’ll politely look.
Oh, wow!
Maybe it was a mistake to share my sample of this with Heather Martin now that I’ve tried it because it is VERY tasty. For some reason the idea of maple tea didn’t really excite me and so I’ve had this sample sitting around unsealed for months. I only opened it yesterday because I was splitting it up for my swap on Wednesday.
But yes. I’m going to have to get some more of this if I reorder from Tealux (and no reason I shouldn’t? I really enjoyed their puerh blends!). This one has a nice mix of spices, but the maple just sorta settles in there and sweetens everything up. The earthy puerh is perfectly suited too by accenting the maple, without bogging it down.
Summary: It’s sweet, earthy, rich, and just a bit spicy. It makes me think of Autumn. Win!
Preparation
Haha. Make sure you get the Tealux ones at least 15% off though. If not, wait? They do them every month or so, and you might be able to get a coupon if you sign up for their newsletter. I can’t remember for sure. I know I enjoyed a lot of their flavoured teas, but I think Sil and some of the ON people weren’t as impressed with the unflavoured teas. Just a heads up!
And teavivre? OH YEAH. I can’t believe I paid $4 shipping and it got here quicker than some of my US tea orders.
That’s pretty awesome. I hope you find some you like if you haven’t tried them. The samples are decently sized.
They do an Irish Cream I really like for winter mornings, so is their white silver tips puerh, and their plain “Everyday Matcha” is decent and reasonable.
So, tealux teas are on for 25% right now: SCHOOL25
I think it’s good until 09/26/13.
/0\ – I’m sorta tempted…
their advertising makes me frown… “an additional 25% off” that implies that the teas are discounted and now i can get even more discount. Can you tell this is the kind of crap i’ve been dealing with at work? lol
I just saw that. But yes, they do have some problems with their advertisements. :) I’m totally ordering once I get some Paypal funds!
Mmmm. Yep, I still like it.
Good thing. I’ve got about 6.5 oz to go? :P
(Don’t let me near sales. Sil knows this, and that’s why I have a few different shared orders stored at her place now!)
Ooh! You could share a bit of this one with me… and I can share Forever Nuts with anyone who wants some. heh.
Oh that’s right – you grabbed that one. Ok – I’m up for a trade! I’ll send you a good sized bag of it. :D
I got about 7 perfect teaspoons in the bag. Not saying you need to give me that much – just wanted to warn you what you were getting. :P
Goodbye Pistachio! (103)
I’m not really that sad that you’re gone. I can see why others adore everything you do, but I just don’t think you’re my type.
It’s not you; it’s me.
Preparation
i had that happen… it’s nice to be able to say: wow! that takes skill… not my thing, but nice job! this one was okay for me, the rose violet calendula was this story exactly! others are flawless =0)
I can totally see how great a tea it would be if it it were more my thing, which is why I gave it 73. But if I rate it above 75 that means I want to buy more. :P
I haven’t logged this in a while but it was the perfect tea for this morning. It seemed almost maltier and fruiter than I remembered! So strange, but so good.
Mmm, I’m going to have to try this one tomorrow. Today is all planned out!
I regret being the only one who didn’t get some of this. Next time. :)
I don’t really get cinnamon from this. So neat how we all taste it differently. :)
Strange! I wonder if I imagined it due to its association with similar flavour profiles! I’ll have to try it again to see!
