493 Tasting Notes
Recently i became obsessed with WuYi oolongs.
This is a sample i bought fr H&S couple months ago. The tea is expensive so i decided to rather try small sample. I was a bit disappointed ,its was only 5.4g in a packet and at least 1g of it just dust. Boo
alright, 5.4g 100ml gaiwan 195F
rinse/ short steeps
the tea is complex. Sweet, spicy, roast, charcoal, some floral in the background and raw walnuts. maybe a hint of dried apricots but its masked because of heavy charcoal. I did enjoyed it. i dont think i would buy it because i just not in love with it.
So far I really like Tao Tea Leaf version.
Preparation
harvest 6/14
I picked 100g on awesome July Anniversary sale.
I suspect this tea didnt have enough rest and develop the flavors, its kinda one dimensional. it is nice but not wow. based on all raving reviews i had high expectations. ok, i’ll wait. i will revisit it in a 6 months. thankfully i got a lot to experiment.
Gongfu method
6g 100ml gaiwan 195F
rinse/ short steeps
Preparation
Yesterday I enjoyed gongfu session of this tea. its not my first try, but didnt log it for some reason. i picked 1 oz size with that crazy 50% sale in August? Marzipan organized that join order. it was an awesome experience.
back to the tea.
6g 100ml gaiwan 195F
rinse/ 5/7/10/10/10/15sec etc
This DHP is exceptionally smooth and sweet. Its not heavily roasted, so no ashy charcoal taste. wet leaves smell heavily of burnt sugar and caramel. Yum.
Preparation
had this tea for breakfast yesterday. It was nice for a smoked salmon and egg. i was thinking a lot what to make but only EG came to my mind. The base is generic chinese black Keeman? with bright lemon -lime flavors. resteeps well at 6min

i really like purple teas of Dehong. This one is no exception. the taste is complex. Its like mix of smoked meats, raw nuts, maybe floral, but on the background. in other words it tastes savory to me. Some spice makes it complete.
Gongfu method
5g 100ml gaiwan 200F
rinse/5/5/10/10/15/20sec etc
Preparation
Revisiting. I got a whole brick. Today I was picking out samples for my friend.

It is nice, bittersweet but mellow. Beautiful color. Leaves are huge. No tingling today

Preparation
this tea is excellent. made gongfu method
6g 100ml glass teapot 205F
rinse/5/10/10/15/15/20sec etc
its rich, malty with stone fruit notes. Surprisingly no sweet potato note, i expected it. tell you the truth im getting tired of all Yunnan blacks having sweet potato profile. Nice and very potent.
Preparation
Hmm. I wonder if what you’re calling “sweet potato” is what I associate with yams. hahahaha. Actually, I’ve noted a bit of split pea in a few of them. I think it’s the umame.
I heard that sweet potato and yums are not the same. I never tried yums. They say its not popular in US supermarkets. Split pea-interesting. Maybe l’ll get this note one day;)
how much was the packet?
The sample is $5 crazy right? Next is tin 1.5 oz for $12. Since H&S local to me and this tea has such a raving reviews I wanted to give it a try minimally . It’s good but I tried better ones.
I do love a roast wuyi oolong…sigh… I need more time for tea drinking!
@ boychik, I’ve seen worse :(
@Terri, as much as I love roast Wuyi this one masking all the other flavors and not enough lasting sweetness ( for me;)
@Kirk, I’m not too upset. It’s a first time I got dust fr H&S. I value this company highly, after all it’s my first company I started my tea journey
