From DAVIDsTEA

Indulge

This ultra-rare oolong from the Wuyi Mountains of China is velvety smooth and lightly creamy, with a subtle hint of orchid. It’s said that it came about when the moon fell in love with a comet. The comet passed her by, as comets will do. The moon cried milky tears, which chilled the tea fields, withering the leaves and giving them a delicate creaminess. It’s been a rare luxury ever since.

Ingredients: Chinese oolong tea from the Fujian province, natural flavouring.

I finally got to try this tea before Christmas in the advent calendar, and it was sooo delicious! I was thoroughly impressed, and picked up 50g in January once the free tea rewards were available. It’s creamy and savoury and complex with lovely floral undertones. My only issue is that it seems to taste better the hotter it is, and my mouth is really heat-sensitive, so I end up scalding myself, haha. It’s worth it…

I think I’m finally getting the oolong brewing parameters down pat. I have had this tea for at least a year now, and this is the first time I’m really TASTING it! I knew the smell was fabulous, dry and brewed, but this the first time I’m getting the caramelly, creamy, sweet notes!
I steeped for 30 seconds and the leaves are only half open. I got a good amber colored tea, with a light-sweet caramel aftertaste that lingers gently in your mouth for some time. The sip is faintly floral, with a creamy mouth feel before coating your tongue in a light honey flavor. So very delicious!
Second steeping of 45 seconds is greener feeling. The sweetness is still very strong but it is beginning to taste more like agave nectar than thin honey. The amber color is deeper this steep as well.

I love milk Oolong and this one was nice, but not my favorite (I prefer Ten Ren’s milk oolong). I gave my friend a taste and she said it reminded her seafood :) I thought it was very buttery and pleasant.

I went into David’s Tea today just to pick up a cup of tea. I promised my boyfriend I wouldn’t buy anymore tea or teaware, and I don’t need anymore. I was about to ask for my cup of tea when I saw that they had the Latte mug I wanted that had sold out before I bought it. I bought it, because I probably won’t have another chance. It was in a Latte tea set with Santa’s Secret, so the mug itself was the same price as usual. It just came with 100 g of free tea. Unfortunately I DEFINITELY don’t need more peppermint tea, as I have 6 oz of Adagio’s Candy Cane tea, which I actually prefer. Oh well. I really wanted the mug, and I’ll just be serving a whole ton of peppermint tea to guests as well as drinking it myself. a lot. For the rest of the year.

So what does that have to do with the Milk Oolong? Why did I just spill my heart out about my new latte mug? Well I did buy a cup of tea, and I bought a cup of the milk oolong. Then I stole an umbrella bag from the front door and carried the used teabag home for a second infusion. I have NO shame. the first infusion I think was brewed too hot, but it was still lovely. It is a buttery tea, and I also get a strong taste of milk from the tea. The second infusion I brewed at a lower temperature (180 degrees, which I the temp I tend to prefer to brew my oolongs). The second infusion is good. It’s smoother than the first infusion, but it is also very sweet. The sweetness I find a bit strange, as if something has been added to the oolong. The tea is very good, though. I probably won’t buy it for myself from David’s, but I’m glad I bought a cup of it. I’m hoping to get a third infusion from this teabag.

I’ve been drinking a lot of Tie Guan Yin recently, and I think I prefer that as a kind of oolong. I’m going to keep investigating milk oolongs, though, because I find the idea of them intriguing.

Oh no.
I wanted so badly to like this tea. Maybe the reviews here and the idea of a “milk oolong” just built up in my mind and lead to disappointment. To be honest, it’s probably just my unrefined tastes at work here – but still – I really wanted this to be so good. I totally get the creamy/buttery taste and feel of this tea, but perhaps if it weren’t for the bad smell I was getting off of it I might’ve been able to enjoy it more. I drank half my cup and couldnt really finish the rest. Not so much because I found it so gross, but it was just too much – too much of something I can’t put my finger on. Richness? Anyways. No dice for this tea and me.
I hope that one day I will either be able to appreciate this tea/find one that I really do like.

Out of all the milk oolongs I’ve tried, this one is my least favourite. Don’t write off milk oolongs yet – try another and see if you find it any better.

EmilyGee

Thanks I’ll keep that in mind! I can see why people like it, but this one just isn’t for me. The search for a milk oolong I like continues! :)

What-cha’s is excellent and very well priced. It’s a bit more complex and floral than some other milk oolongs I’ve had. I also really like Cornelia Bean’s though it’s expensive ($38/100g?)

EmilyGee

Thank you! I’ll try and get my hands on some of those!

I had this as part of the advent calendar, and didn’t like it at all either. The reviews led me to believe it would be magical.

This was good – it was creamy and sweet, and the next two steeps got more floral. I brewed this western style as I reorganized the tea cabinet. It was perfect for the last day of 2014. It wasn’t overly buttery, which I like.

It was a hell of a year. Frankly, few good memories were made this year. But hopefully that means there is nowhere to go but up. Good or bad, I will be moving in July or August, who knows where, so that will be an adventure at least. One great thing has been Steepster. In a few more days, I will have my one year anniversary here. This site has really revolutionized tea for me. I was into it before, but very limited in my knowledge and exposure to types of tea, and companies. I also have loved having a way to keep track of the things I’ve loved most so I know what to purchase more of.

2014 was probably the worst year of my life. Steepster and tea was one of the few things I could keep engaged with that didn’t stress me out more. This community really helped save my sanity last year.

Here’s to a much better 2015.

Me too man, it was a really really rough year. I do believe the worst of my life as well overall. Just really struggled with anxiety and depression this year, more persistently than ever before, combined with a few crap events. I agree that I threw myself into tea to have a safe place away from the insanity.

Again, another one from the archives that I should have reviewed a long time ago! I remember this being the first expensive tea I ever bought, LOL. Nice and sweet, definitely creamy all on its own (I’m not sure if I like this better with a tiny dab of extra milk or without). A fine oolong addition to any tea cupboard.

Onward with the 24 Days of Christmas from DavidsTea. This is my first oolong, so I’m not sure what to expect.

Dry – Smells buttery/milky . Tightly rolled dark kernels

Steeped – 4 infusions. Each around 182F. 4-7 minutes (longer steeping with each infusion). Love watching the tea leaves unfurl. It smells amazing, caramel and rich.

Taste – It has this creamy milky smooth flavor that leads to a light vegetal (spinach) after taste. With each steeping the butter flavor lessens and the green plant flavor becomes more prominent. It is a beautiful golden color.

This is so good and if I can get 4 infusions every time, I think I might have to put this on the purchase list!
