658 Tasting Notes
I bought this in an attempt to find a mate I like. The reports of its great chocolateyness convinced me. To be fair here, I haven’t liked any mate I’ve tried. But I do like chocolate, which I was hoping would override it.
It does smell very chocolatey in the bag, but once I brewed it I got worried. It just smelled like mate. So I courageously took a sip and, well, it didn’t taste like much of anything! There was a tiny hint of chocolate but not much going on. I think I used plenty, so I will have to try steeping longer. On the bright side, it didn’t taste like unpleasant mate to me. It gets points for that. I decided to heat and whisk some chocolate almond milk I have but since that itself doesn’t taste like much, it only improved it slightly.
I don’t know. It was okay but I ended up forgetting about it halfway through the mug and never finished.
Fancy that; not oversteeping this makes a big difference! It’s a lot more mild this time but really nice.
I love this tea. I haven’t tried genmaicha with matcha from any other companies, but I feel like I probably don’t need to.
This was light but toasty and delicious. I got two equally nice steeps out of it. I prefer this to the genmaicha; the matcha adds such a nice, sweet element!
Preparation
I haven’t had this in a long time. Now that I have the One Touch, I followed the suggested steeping parameters pretty much exactly. I’m not sure what I’d been doing before but I’m never good about timing things and often overestimate how long tea has been steeping. I know I steeped this too long once, too, and it gets a bit weird.
Anyway, this time the colour is different for one reason or another. It’s not really very pink! It actually looks like a weak black tea for the most part, maybe with a pinkish tinge. I may have used more dry tea this time?
It also tastes a little different. It’s more nutty and less apple-y. It’s also a bit less distinctive, but still very nice. I can see why it’s one of their best sellers. It’s fun, it smells amazing and looks cool, and it’s sweet and very relaxing. It’s really good on horrendously cold days like today and before bed. This was also my friend’s favourite of the five teas in the David’s Starter Kit I gave her for Christmas.
Preparation
So good it’s distracting me from housecleaning. Alright, it doesn’t take much to do that but a big Breville-full of this is making it seriously difficult to clean up after the weekend.
This is the first time I’ve had this tea with milk. I’ve not added anything before. It’s quite nice both ways. It’s so rich and earthy but smooth and the milk contributes a little bit more to the smoothness.
You finding the Breville makes a real difference? Worth it? I may ask for one for my birthday, but it’s so damn pricey.
I was lucky enough to get it for Christmas, and I think it is worth it. It makes a difference for the more finicky teas, but that might be largely because I’m easily distracted and bad at keeping time! It’s mostly about convenience. It’s a really nice machine and pre-setting is a luxury. The biggest plus for me is being able to keep my tea warm till I am actually able to drink it. So, it’s not a must-have but I don’t think you’d regret it.
I think I’m in the same place with this one. I can’t get over how amazing it smells, even once steeped. But I can’t get around it tasting watered-down to me. I used a bit of cream today instead of the almond milk I normally do to help but it hasn’t made much difference. It definitely doesn’t feel watered down, but it tastes that way.
The spice leaves a little tingle though it doesn’t pack the punch the description promises. It does, though, sting if you’ve got dry/chapped lips!
Finally got around to trying my second sample from Design A Tea. I wasn’t expecting it to do much for me so kind of forgot about it.
But this was pretty nice! Very coconuty with a touch of chocolate. It was creamy and pretty rich despite my using far too much water for the 2 g sample.
The leaves were quite small and a bit dusty unlike the pretty, large oolong leaves I’m use to.
I added this tea but can’t find a photo/description on the site as it’s sold out.
This is another from my Special Teas super-sale shipment.
I was worried that the rooibos and earl grey combination would really not work for me. It’s not bad, though. The flavours co-operate somewhat with the bergamot front and centre and the rooibos woodiness lingering underneath. It’s not blowing me away, though, and it’s not the same without a strong black tea base. Pretty much exactly what I expected.
