Strange VariaTEA TTB: Tea 6

I cold brewed this. It’s a blueberry tea. It’s fine. It’s not really much different than most blueberry teas, other than a touch more hibiscus.

Strange VariaTEA TTB: Tea 5

I feel like this was hyped for a while either here or on Instagram, but I wouldn’t buy a lavender tea since me and lavender aren’t huge friends. However, when I saw this in the box, I did try it…and didn’t really like it. It wasn’t even the lavender. I think the package in the box may be a bit on the older side and is showing it’s age. It got the weird rooibos flavour that happens when it’s passed it’s prime. That plus an overly note made for a not great cuppa.

Strange VariaTEA TTB: Tea 4

I had this as a latte. It smelled and looked like Cocoa Canela so I had high hopes for this one. The first sip even tasted a bit like Cocoa Canela. But then the spices built and they’re just too strong for my tastes. This was heavy pepper and ginger and while normally I like the burn, this just got too almost savoury for my liking. Thanks for the chance to try it though, Roswell Strange!

Strange VariaTEA TTB: Tea 3

Whenever teas have “Cream” in the name I’m intrigued. This is no exception. Not sure how I feel about chocolate and cranberry and cream together, which is potentially why I never owned this but thankfully Roswell Strange tossed it into the Strange VariaTEA TTB, so I get to try it now.

It’s not overly sweet. Ros’s note mentions Brookside chocolates and honestly I see it. That sort of dark chocolate covered fruit vibe. It’s got both the chocolate and cranberry flavours pretty accurate. Is it creamy though? About as creamy as a dark chocolate would be. It’s nice, though not one I think I’d reach for beyond this sample.

Thank you for sharing this one with me, Roswell Strange! It was the perfect choice for a tea that reminds me of someone for the Valentine’s Bingo on Instagram. Alas I think this tea is long past it’s prime. It’s sweet Berry and then nutty, almost hazelnut like, and then sort of musty. That’s age…and I think the white tea base.

Strange VariaTEA TTB: Tea 2

Yesterday I got up at 4:30 am so I could get a ride to work with my brother-in-law. I got to the office at 6:30 am and learned the lights don’t even turn on until 7 am. Thankfully the printer worked and I was able to print my 8+ lb application in the dark. My plan was to get the application out asap and then I could leave at 2:30 pm. Since I was leaving early, I also didn’t bring a lunch because I was going to meet up with a friend. Obviously things didn’t go according to plan and I only left the office at 4:15 pm.

All that is to say I was super grateful for this matcha milk, made with a matcha shared in the TTB by Roswell Strange (thank you!). I didn’t like the matcha. I like sweet matcha milks and that isn’t this. I did like some caffeine. I think me and 3 Leaf Tea aren’t a match. Though this was sorta cocoa flavoured. Cocoa. Grass. No sweetness. Good for some, but not for me.

I used to work in an office that didn’t have the lights on until 7a as well haha. Yay for the printer working though!

Thankfully there were flood lights in the main space so I wasn’t fully in the dark

Strange VariaTEA TTB: Tea 1

Roswell Strange and I started a TTB and it has returned so I’m making my way through some of the new teas…to make room for my additions. I have never seen this blend before and it’s caffeine free so it seemed the perfect option for a latte. It’s pretty good. I think plain, the honeybush may have been strong but as a latte, the flavour is mostly muted. Instead, I’m getting a lot of coconut flavour. So it’s like a tasty coconut latte, with a touch of sugar/caramel. Yum!

Thank you Sil for this one. I picked it as my chocolate blend for the Valentine’s Bingo on Instagram. Then laughed because there was virtually no chocolate flavour. It was mostly mint and malt. Good but really chocolate or snowballs so that threw me.

This is a rose black tea. Floral and slightly astringent. Not terrible but a pretty standard and mediocre rose tea. Didn’t expect much and it was basically on par with what I thought it may be. It fit the bill for a floral blend for the Instagram Valentine’s Bingo. Check out the pic here: https://www.instagram.com/p/CZezA0Cumcy/?utm_medium=copy_link

My cupboard has grown exponentially since joining this site and I have a lot to share. Feel free to snoop through my cupboard and message me if anything interests you – I am always happy to swap!

For me, flavored teas are definitely my sweet spot. I will most often reach for black teas and rooibos or honeybush blends but I do keep some flavored whites and greens around for when the mood strikes. I have a few herbals/tisanes but most of the time I find myself disappointed by them as they often smell deliciously sweet and then end up tasting tart/sour. I have a little bit of an aversion to pu’erh and oolong teas. I am also wary of florals, earl greys, and chai teas. I do not like overpowering citrus flavors nor do I usually like hibiscus, licorice or chamomile. I love dessert teas – caramel, vanilla, toffee, cookie, cream, and other sweet flavors make me smile. Fruits like strawberry, peach, mango, and pineapples will often catch my attention as well.

I have also realized that although I really enjoy adding frothed milk to some of my teas, if I do not like the tea with zero additives (just in plain water without milk or sugar), I probably won’t drink it. The one exception is flavored matchas which I will happily drink in cold milk if I do not like it mixed with hot water. My theory is if the tea can’t stand on its own then it is not for me and I will more than likely try to swap it out for something else.

Tea Ratings Guide (as of December 10, 2017)
90-100 Teas I NEED on hand at all times
80-89 Teas I want to keep around for a cup every now and then
70-79 Teas I am glad I have around and can experiment with but probably don’t need more than what’s in my cupboard
60-69 Teas I would not turn down a cup of from a friend but that would probably be enough
50-59 Teas I can see why someone would enjoy but are not for me
Under 50 Teas I really did not like and most likely got dumped
