Strange VariaTEA TTB: Tea 15

I made this tea this morning and then got caught up in a bunch of calls so it’s cold now. It’s still pretty good though. Smooth and sort of mango-ish. Nothing special but nothing offensive.

I made this as a latte and I see a lot of potential but I don’t think I steeped it strong enough. I’m taking this out of the box though because I want to test it out more.

Made this earlier and was excited to try a fairly local shop. Alas, while this had a clear blueberry flavour, it was also very brisk/dry.

Ended up finishing off the package of this, which I made as a latte. It wasn’t bad. Wasn’t overly good either. Sort of made me think of maple oatmeal with lots of cinnamon.

The stevia is strong in this one so I’m glad I caught that in the ingredients list and only made a small cup. It’s blueberry jam color with stevia and just a lot of sweetness. Like cloying. This is a pass for me but glad I got to try it!

Strange VariaTEA TTB: Tea 10

Started my morning with this. It’s not bad. Sweet, but given it’s a maple tea that isn’t surprising. I also taste the oolong base which pairs nicely with the maple sweetness. I sort of get French toast as well. Overall, this is alright but not one I personally need again.

Had this as a teapop with strawberry Perrier and it was awesome! Plus it helped me check off the last box of Valentine’s Bingo just in time.

Thanks Roswell Strange for adding this fun tea into the box. The Valentine’s Bingo wanted a tea that warms your heart and this tea made for a lot of nostalgia and thus fit the bill. Check out the pic here: https://www.instagram.com/p/CZpmdPNODmV/?utm_medium=copy_link

This tea is nice. A touch brisk and astringent but that could be due to the recommended 5 min steep time. I feel it may benefit from slightly less steeping because of that.

Getting past the astringency, the tea tastes like almond brittle. Sweet caramel, warm almond and a touch of almost-burnt sugar. There is one serving left and while I thought about taking it for myself, I decided to leave it for the next person who gets the box and has an interest.

The packaging on this is so pretty. The tea is also quite lovely. It’s syrupy in its sweetness but not super dense, if that makes sense. There’s also a clear fig flavour with a rose top note. The caramel is present but blends into the fig. It’s nice. Not a flavour I would really ever crave but nice.

One of the Instagram participants added T Kettle teas to the box. Seeing as I still haven’t gotten around to trying any, I was pretty happy to see those. However, I cold brewed this one and we aren’t off to a great start. This is very earthy from the beetroot but then had carrot sweetness hit you at the back of your throat. Then there is something nutty here too and it’s the sort of nutty flavour that had me completely turned off from Forever Nuts – yet I don’t know what’s creating that quality here. All in all, I am just not liking this very much.

My cupboard has grown exponentially since joining this site and I have a lot to share. Feel free to snoop through my cupboard and message me if anything interests you – I am always happy to swap!

For me, flavored teas are definitely my sweet spot. I will most often reach for black teas and rooibos or honeybush blends but I do keep some flavored whites and greens around for when the mood strikes. I have a few herbals/tisanes but most of the time I find myself disappointed by them as they often smell deliciously sweet and then end up tasting tart/sour. I have a little bit of an aversion to pu’erh and oolong teas. I am also wary of florals, earl greys, and chai teas. I do not like overpowering citrus flavors nor do I usually like hibiscus, licorice or chamomile. I love dessert teas – caramel, vanilla, toffee, cookie, cream, and other sweet flavors make me smile. Fruits like strawberry, peach, mango, and pineapples will often catch my attention as well.

I have also realized that although I really enjoy adding frothed milk to some of my teas, if I do not like the tea with zero additives (just in plain water without milk or sugar), I probably won’t drink it. The one exception is flavored matchas which I will happily drink in cold milk if I do not like it mixed with hot water. My theory is if the tea can’t stand on its own then it is not for me and I will more than likely try to swap it out for something else.

90-100 Teas I NEED on hand at all times
80-89 Teas I want to keep around for a cup every now and then

60-69 Teas I would not turn down a cup of from a friend but that would probably be enough
50-59 Teas I can see why someone would enjoy but are not for me
Under 50 Teas I really did not like and most likely got dumped
