DAVIDsTEA Matcha Advent Calendar – Day 1

ADVENT DAY!!! I was literally bouncing and jumping for joy and my family thought I was nuts but I was so excited. And I was also ignoring all of social media and steepster for fear of spoilers since my days end late and start late thanks to my weird hours dictated by school and baby.

Anyways, today has felt very hectic. I made this hours ago as a hot latte by tossing 3 perfect matcha spoons (maybe 1/2 the package) into 8 oz of milk while it frothed. I would have done 16 oz but my sister’s machine only holds 8. I had a few sips while it was hot and I really liked it. Like between the spices and sweetness, it was almost spot on for pumpkin pie for me. But, like I said, its been hectic so I am finishing the cup cold now. A little bit of the matcha has settled which is making the last few sips very sweet but umami flavored as well. Not loving that but perhaps that’s my fault for leaving it for so long. Overall, a pretty good start to the day.

Mastress Alita

Ya, last year I had an advent which was a gift from a friend spoiled for me and now I’m avoiding Steepster until it feels “safe”.

Thought about the last latte and needed another. So. Good. Also very tempted to go downstairs and open my advents since technically it is Dec 1 but I am resisting the urge and will open them when I wake up. Hopefully my other advent arrives by then.

This is the last of my teas from last year’s full advent calendars. So this feels sorta like an achievement.

As far as bergamot teas go, this isn’t too bad. The bergamot is mild enough and the lime offsets it nicely. It makes for a bright citrus flavor on a smooth base tea. It also has a depth to it that makes it feel like a winter tea despite the citrus flavors.

Leafhopper

I’ve been seeing the number of teas in your cupboard go down and am very impressed. You’re a sipdown champion! :)

VariaTEA

Thank you! Though it should be interesting to see what happens after all the recent orders and advents get added

Leafhopper

LOL. At least you’ll get small quantities of the Advent teas.

Sipdown (233)…sorta

I really didn’t like this one. The jammy and rich berry note had so much promise but the umami and herb quality to this was waaaayyy too much for my tastes. The last little bit of this went into my swap box and will likely be sent off to my tea twin, Roswell Strange, when I eventually send her a package.

I figure with a bijillion advents starting in just a couple days, I should finish the couple of teas still lingering around from last year’s advent. Last year I did the Dammann advent and the customized Bird and Blend. However, I only did the Dammann one for the first half of December while I was still in London and then did the Bird and Blend for the second half of December after I came home. The Dammann was just too big to travel with without destroying so I pulled the rest of the teas from the calendar when I returned to school in January. That’s why there are still a couple lingering around my stash.

I have worked my way through most except for this tea and one other from the Dammann calendar, which I will have tomorrow. This is a green blueberry tea, I think and its nice enough. I am actually drinking it cold because my sister distracted me with discussions of Chanukah gifts. Specifically my Chanukah gifts because I think I want books. I own a kindle but I love cracking open a new book. Unfortunately reading for fun during school isn’t a thing because I feel guilty since if I am reading, it should be my textbooks.

Anyways, back to the tea. It’s fruity and that fruitiness teeters between blueberry and just fruity. It also has a base that at times is smooth and at other times pops up as a little drying.

Ha don’t remind me of how many teas from last year’s calendars I still need to drink

This as an eggnog latte is so. Good. SO GOOD!

It cuts through the oolong flavor so it’s just creamy salted caramel and eggnog richness. It’s a decadent latte and it’s awesome.

Sil

you’re getting more of this..also if you have some set aside for me..take it back.

VariaTEA

I think you picked up the amount I had for you but I could be wrong.

Made this as a tea lemonade and its pretty good. Lemonade is definitely the strongest flavor but with a nice undertone of passionfruit.

Iced Tea Sipdown (235)

I’ve had this tea but I didn’t remember this tea. It blends with so many other fruity blends by DAVIDs in my mind. It’s sweet and generically fruity but also has that touch of waxiness that a lot of DAVIDsTEA blends have. Fine but nothing special which could explain why I don’t remember it well. I only got it again because it came in a sample pack with other teas I wanted to try. That’s likely the only reason I would get it again in the future.

AJRimmer

Ha yeah this is definitely one that appears in many of their sample packs so I’ve had it several times without explicitly buying it is well!

drank Strawbearry Gummy by DAVIDsTEA

Used my sister to help me randomly pick a tea. I was really warm in the house for some reason so I wanted something iced. And when I think iced and cooling, I think fruity. So it worked out pretty well that my sister’s numbers ended up randomly selecting this tea.

My bag of this had a bunch of gummies. I noticed at least one green, one red, and one orange one in the mix for this tea alone. I made it in a teabag given the gummies can be annoying to get off filters. I was worried that would throw off the flavor a bit but this tea still has awesome jammy strawberry notes. Plus, a touch of gummy bear sweetness.

Silent Kettle

I’m curious, does this tea have a jello-like feel or consistency because of the gummies? :O

VariaTEA

Not that I recall.

Latte Sipdown (237)

I had such high hopes for this one but I am not loving it. I think its the hojicha since this is overwhelmingly grassy. Cinnamon, sweet maple, grass. So its not working for me at all…which is probably for the best since I can’t love and own everything.

Cameron B.

Aww what a shame, I agree that sometimes houjicha can be too grassy. I have this one but haven’t opened it yet…

VariaTEA

I feel like I am not in the majority so hopefully you have better luck than I did.

Silent Kettle

Did you try this one as a latte? Sorry to hear you didn’t like it :( This one is one of my favourites! <3

VariaTEA

Yeah, it was a latte. Cant win them all but that just means one less tea I want to buy so my wallet will be happy lol

Silent Kettle

Aw! Sorry to hear that! :( True, everybody has different taste buds, ha-ha! :) What would you say your favourite tea from Dessert by Deb is?

My cupboard has grown exponentially since joining this site and I have a lot to share. Feel free to snoop through my cupboard and message me if anything interests you – I am always happy to swap!

For me, flavored teas are definitely my sweet spot. I will most often reach for black teas and rooibos or honeybush blends but I do keep some flavored whites and greens around for when the mood strikes. I have a few herbals/tisanes but most of the time I find myself disappointed by them as they often smell deliciously sweet and then end up tasting tart/sour. I have a little bit of an aversion to pu’erh and oolong teas. I am also wary of florals, earl greys, and chai teas. I do not like overpowering citrus flavors nor do I usually like hibiscus, licorice or chamomile. I love dessert teas – caramel, vanilla, toffee, cookie, cream, and other sweet flavors make me smile. Fruits like strawberry, peach, mango, and pineapples will often catch my attention as well.

I have also realized that although I really enjoy adding frothed milk to some of my teas, if I do not like the tea with zero additives (just in plain water without milk or sugar), I probably won’t drink it. The one exception is flavored matchas which I will happily drink in cold milk if I do not like it mixed with hot water. My theory is if the tea can’t stand on its own then it is not for me and I will more than likely try to swap it out for something else.

Tea Ratings Guide (as of December 10, 2017)
90-100 Teas I NEED on hand at all times
80-89 Teas I want to keep around for a cup every now and then
70-79 Teas I am glad I have around and can experiment with but probably don’t need more than what’s in my cupboard
60-69 Teas I would not turn down a cup of from a friend but that would probably be enough
50-59 Teas I can see why someone would enjoy but are not for me
Under 50 Teas I really did not like and most likely got dumped
