Great tea, but I think I overbrewed it on this first try.
It definitely delivers in the chocolate and banana categories in smell, but didn’t fully come through in the taste department. I also tried adding sugar and milk, but those drowned out the subtle chocolate and banana notes.
I’ll try again with a shorter brew time (packet suggests 4-10 minutes; I went for around 8:30).
Preparation
My dad is big into bike racing and when I was little he always ate a ton of powerbars and I always used to go to hang out with him at his friends bike shop and my snack would be powerbars. So whenever I drink this tea all I can think is powerbars. It doesn’t taste like one per-say but the scent is a dead ringer. So every time I smell the dry leaves I don’t think mmm tea, I think weird powerbar. Aside from that the tea isn’t bad. I have to use a lot of tea and steep for awhile to get it to the desired strength though, but I enjoy it with a splash of milk. And I guess the childhood memories aren’t a bad thing either – haha.
Preparation
I had this last night but steepster was having issues loading on my computer so I couldn’t log it then. I steeped the tea for 7 minutes and I found some flavor. I smelled more sweet – a little carmel-y or maybe it is toffee. I don’t know that my nose can distinguish the difference. Anyway I added milk again. This time it actually looked tea with milk whereas yesterday it looked like milk with tea. I got a little more black tea flavor and something that tasted kind of mocha-y and I am getting alittle of that carmel/toffee.
I had this tea again. This time I tired it with milk because I thought that it might help the chocolate and toffee flavors come through. Unfortunately it is still pretty weak. Perhaps I need to use more tea, although I already use more than I normally do with loose leaf. It is still a decent tea, it just doesn’t have a ton of flavor.
This tea was pretty good. It smelled kind of like a protein bar which was a bit weird. I don’t think I heated the water up enough or something because I steeped it for longer then the package said and it still looked more like white tea than black. It tasted like a mild black tea with a hint of chocolate. It was very good but light. I think I need to reattempt with higher water temperatures.
Despite the fact that my cold is still wreaking havoc with my tastebuds, I decided to give this tea a try. I will reserve judgement until I can fully appreciate it, but for now I’m pleasantly surprised. I brewed it for almost 5 minutes, and I was worried that it might be bitter, but it’s not. I don’t think I would really recognize the flavour as “pumpkin”, rather than just spices that are often used in conjunction with pumpkin, but it’s pretty much what I expected.
The tea is a medium orange colour, and the smell is quite strong—like wintery chai spices, but with something kind of posing as pumpkin underneath (unfortunately, it seems quite artificial). Again, my sense of smell is a tad off right now but I feel like I’m getting a pretty good sense of what this blend is like.
I’ll reserve real judgement on this until my senses are clearer, but for now I’m pleasantly surprised. I don’t love it, but it’s about what I expected.

I revisited this today…and believe it or not…I infused LESS loose leaf for LESS time. I usually go overboard with both because I like my tea strong…but…I thought I would try this one a little different. This time it was 3 mins or a little under. I totally liking it better this way for this specific tea! Eventho the black tea taste is not as strong the Licorice blends in better and seems a bit more smooth…plus a few more points on the rating for this!
Angrboda sent me goodies! Thanks!!!!
I randomly chose a tea to try first…it was this one. This is the first tea from 52 Teas I have gotten to try so I am very excited about it!
It smells like Smoke, Wood, and Licorice.
As it infuses it loses the smoke and wood scent and is more just licorice.
It’s lighter in color than I thought it would be. It’s not as strong tasting as I assumed either based on smell…but that is a good thing! It blends well.
I like this. It’s different and different is good…go against the grain, think outside the box, wHy bE nOrMaL???
I would have this again. Tastes like black tea and licorice but not a funky aftertaste. Thumbs up!
You got the last I had of this. Fortunately as it turns out I did 52teas, I’ve stocked up with another pouch. It was definitely one that grew on me over time. I agree though, I expected something else from the colour and the taste as well. I think that’s why I was initially wary of it and then I had to come to terms with it little by little.
LOVE the smell upon opening the bag. I could just sit here all afternoon with my nose in the leaves. Sweety and creamy smelling, with a touch of greenness. On pouring the hot water over it, it goes back to smelling like any regular genmaicha, and then returns to its sweet malty scent when the leaves are removed.
Oh my, this is delicious. I might have difficulties sharing this one. I’ve always found genmaicha to be a soothing tea, and this one is no different. It almost feels /more/ caring because of the slightly desserty flavour. The toasted rice flavour is toned down quite a bit, and the green tea doesn’t leave me with that flavour that makes me dislike so many of them. This is pure delicious. This tea makes me happy!
Preparation
I just got this in the mail with another 52teas blend, and decided the try the one that smelled less good first. I found that this smelled mostly of raisins when I opened it up. I smell reminded me a bit of old leather as well, very comforting and mild.
I brewed it up, and the smell and flavour still reminded me mostly of raisins and leather until about a third of the way through the cup. I added no milk or sugar (though I plan to try this tea with varying “dressings” to find its stride. The tea is dry on the tongue, and as it cools slightly, the “toast” flavour begins to come out. Not at all unpleasant, quite enjoyable actually, but I’m thinking it needs some flavour enhancers to come into its own. This is actually hitting the spot that has been wanting a mild black tea these past few days.
I’m a little disappointed that I’m not getting the exact indistinguishable flavour that people have commented on, but it’s a tasty and comfortable tea. I’m looking forward to trying it a few other ways. I wonder how they sample it in the store.
Preparation
This is my fave tea from 52 teas thus far. (I haven’t been brave enough to try the maple bacon but it is sitting on my counter just waiting patiently for me.)
This is a lovely green tea with such a smooth, creamy flavor with a delightfully refreshing taste of mint. I made a pot for a friend and I this morning and I don’t think she liked it much as she only had one cup (I had at least 5, but they were from the traditional tea cup, not a big ol’ mug). This may be one of my new faves.
Sorry, time to head back to the office with a cuppa this delightfulness to go!
There aren’t many teas I won’t try but this would be one of those teas ONLY because I hate bananas! I do hope others enjoy it tho! :P
