drank Shamrock Tea by 52teas
433 tasting notes

Backlogging this from yesterday… this is by far the best tea from my 52teas order. With that said, it wasn’t terribly impressive. I was just surprised that I liked it, considering that the other three teas were not really my kind of thing. I can’t say that there was all that much vanilla, but I could tell that something was tempering the peppermint and green tea flavours and I’d guess that vanilla was the reason. Overall, a smooth blend, but I’ll have to try again to get more of a feel for it.

For some reason, there were a ton of floaty bits left after I pulled the strainer out so there must be some smaller elements than usual in this blend. I had to spoon some of them out because they weren’t willing to settle on the bottom of my cup.

Preparation

Cofftea

As much as I added mint to everything early in my loose tea journey and still blend now, vanilla mint is a combo I’ve never had. It sounds so good!=D

Alannah

I like mint in nearly everything but I’m picky about it in my tea. This blend was good, but I didn’t get a whole lot of vanilla flavour from it.

drank Apple Pie a la mode by 52teas
243 tasting notes

Inspired(!) by Ricky, I went and brewed up a pot of this. I can definitely SMELL apple pie in the unsteeped leaves, they have the familiar black tea base and then what smells like cinnamon and vanilla to represent the “a la mode” and a faint odor of apples and sweetness which is probably the hint of brown sugar. This smells fantastic; both before steeping and as a brewed tea.

The brewing (hot with no additives) tastes like black tea with a hint, just ever so slightly, of apple. The predominant flavors are the cinnamon and vanilla with a sweetness from the brown sugar. All of the flavors are there, albeit very little in the case of the apple, they just need to be married a little differently.

I feel that a shorter brew time (to cut the amount of time to brew the black tea) and adding a little sweetener and milk will help bring this together to make apple pie a la mode.

Will try and repost!

I wonder how this would hold up in a tea float or tea latte float? That’d definitely give it an a la mode taste. You’d probably want to top it w/ a bit of extra cinnamon and nutmeg. But my concern is would the apple get lost in all that milkyness?

Ricky

I’m tempted to transform this into a float like Frank suggested. I’d imagine it would taste pretty good like that. Might give it a shot a little later, enjoying some pu-erh right now.

I think it needs more apples. The apples are the best part of the apple pie. The second day I tried it, I had more apple pieces, so that made it significantly better than my first cup.

Southern Boy Teas

You guys keep saying “float”. I can’t vouch for how it would taste as a float. What I was recommending was having it as a teashake (like milkshake, but with tea).

We do floats here at Zoomdweebie’s too, but they are generally better when you start with a tea soda and then add the ice cream.

Ricky

Haha, I was interchanging tea + vanilla as a float. I mean floats are generally soda + ice cream, but swap the two… ahhh you get what I mean =P

Cofftea

52teas, I don’t see why it wouldn’t be good- a tea float is just an unblended teashake. I’d suggest making this one flat though. Carbonated apple pie a la mode? Nah…

Cinoi

I think that adding milk and sugar to make the shake like 52teas said is going to be fantastic, and Ricky, you’re right, it needs more apple, but they got the a la mode part right, I just think milk (like milk and apples) might help to brighten the flavor of the apples

I love how honest your reviews are!

Southern Boy Teas

LOL. Love how you started with “Dear Frank”!

I’m really sorry this didn’t live up to your expectations. A lot of our in shop customers really enjoyed this as a tea shake. You might give that a try:

Brew up a small amount of the tea, extra strong and extra sweet.
While it’s still hot, toss it in a blender with some vanilla ice cream.
I would say you need about a 1:3 ratio of tea to ice cream, but it’s going to depend on how hot your tea is and how thick you like your shakes.

In the meantime, I’ll keep trying to create more that are as spectacular as the Pina Colada Honeybush.

silvermage2000

Nice review this is a tea I hope to try.

Ricky

Well, Frank, I wanted to dedicate this review to you, even though I kind of side tracked and started gearing it toward fellow Steepster members somewhere down the road. You mentioned I kept getting tea flavors that I didn’t particularly like, so I wanted to express my love for apple pie =P

Thanks for the float suggestion. It sounds delicious already. I could see how that might actually make this tea taste amazing. Well, here’s an idea, in the future you can rate your teas as 100 AND post up the recipes =P. It’s kind of funny because I was looking on the website for a latte recipe for this tea. I was wondering if I had to do anything special to it =P

Southern Boy Teas

I think I won’t be rating any of my teas in the future. I’ve already sent an email to Jason asking if he can remove the ratings I did submit.

Ricky

Soooo I realized what I have to do….. I have to fly out to Kansas and have a cup of tea prepared the right way by you ;)

With a name like that you would expect it to be super sweet. It isn’t. Most of @52teas have a great smell. This one does not have a very strong smell at all. What it lacks in smell it makes up in taste. It’s a very mellow tea, you can really taste the cream cheese.

Not the best Honeybush tea I have tasted but defiantly one to try.

Label says steep for 4-10 minutes but I would recommend 4 max.

This is promising, I bought some of this and was worried it would be a bit too sweet for me. I can’t wait to give it a go.

Cofftea

Cream cheese just might be the most unusual flavoring in tea I’ve seen yet.:)

Southern Boy Teas

Even more unusual than bacon? Huh.

We’re working on a peanut butter and jelly tea. How’s that for unusual?

Ricky

Bacon sounds like lapsang =P

Ummm, this one did sound interesting…. maybe my next order? Why must you tempt me Frank. I think I’ll have to unsubscribe from the New Tea emails.

Cofftea

52 teas, GREAT IDEA! How about lox and cream cheese?

Ricky, bad idea… that means no more free tea. :-,(

Southern Boy Teas

Ricky, in addition to the Maple Bacon that started as a 52teas tea, we also now have Smoky Bacon, which has an all lapsang base. They are both now available exclusively at their new home http://www.manteas.com (and yes, I will be adding them and the other Man Teas to Steepster soon.

There are two equal flavors in this tea and they blend very well together so you don’t have to worry about flavor war in your mouth which is greatly appreciated. One is the pumpkin which is light and sweet when you put it next to the pecan. Here the pecan is very dark, taking on a heavily toasted nut flavor, and it forms the back bone of the flavor along with the after taste.

Apparently there are two different kinds of pecan pies. One is the sweet molasses with pecan to mellow out the flavor and I like this kind best. The other is dark and nutty with only a little sweetness to brighten the pie up a little bit. This tea tastes like the darker toasted nut kind of pie. I wish it was a little bit more like the molasses kind of pie but, it is good the way it is. And my wanting it to be like the sweeter kind of pie is really just a matter of preference.

Bottom line this tea is delicious and the pecan flavor is present which make the difference between this and the similar pumpkin pie tea very apparent. I like it.

big mug to finish off the pouch. About 1.5 tsp in a 12oz mug, finished with vanilla flavored coconut milk creamer (the perfect addition!)

I see so many people using coconut milk creamer. Must buy some!

Janefan

I’m not even lactose intolerant, but I have quickly become addicted to pretty much all of So Delicious’ coconut milk products. I also like Silk’s almond milk.

This is great with just one teaspoon full of So Delicious Vanilla Coconut Creamer. (Any more creamer is too much and overwhelms/oversweetens the already sweet & flavorful tea.)

Preparation

Sounds great…what were your measurements? I may want to replicate. Thanks!

Janefan

honestly, it was about 3 Tbsp in about 2 cups milk for about 24hrs. But I’m sure it would be fine to halve all those amounts/times. It was a lazy sort of experiment….

Janefan

I was trying to use up the milk. I actually only drank half tonight. It’s hard to say how much flavor was from the milk and how much the tisane, but it did somehow taste thicker and creamier than just the milk alone, which is a bit thin for my tastes. (For the record, it was “So Delicious” brand sweetened vanilla flavored coconut milk)

RachanaC (Rachel)-iHeartTeas

Great, thank you. If this happened a couple of says sooner I would still have some of that coconut milk left. Oh well, looks like I am buying more soon. :-)

It’s very good iced. The pina colada flavor (more colada than pina, really) makes it sweet enough that no sweetener in necessary. However, I do think a bit of raw sugar, palm sugar, or some other tropical-friendly sweetener may add a bit off depth. I actually found myself wanting to add some pineapple juice to make a “tea punch” of sorts. Alas, I don’t have any.

SoccerMom

Janefan, Thanks for letting us know. I’ve been looking forward to your tasting note ever since you mentioned it last night.

I decided to make this b/c I didn’t want to fuss w temp and add-ins. Did notice that the coconut shavings had settled to bottom of bag so I stirred the mix up a bit before spooning it out. I brewed a scant 2 tsp in 16oz water for 8 min (filled the IngenuiTEA to the brim!)

Then I added a splash of organic half&half after all since I had it on hand (bought specifically for tea.

I’m moving this rating closer the the lip-licking smiley face because that’s how I feel about this blend. The touch of cream made it taste just like a blended pina colada, only hot!

16oz? Wow, you really musta been craving this!=D

Janefan

yup, and I drank it all and enjoyed every drop!

I’m sorry…whenever I hear/read “honeybush”…well, I have to confess that my mind dives into the gutter. Not sure I can ever buy or order a tea with that word in it. My husband would have a field day! :-)
