Needed something sweet after dinner, so I made chai drinking chocolate! 1tsp chai steeped in 1/3c milk (the hottest you can get it w/ scorching and making a mess), then added 3TB drinking chocolate mix. Sooo good…

Preparation
5 min, 0 sec
Cofftea

2nd infusion, 7min. Made “clean the pot chai” which is the term I’ve coined for making the 2nd infusion of chai after a chai latte w/o cleaning the pot or the cup. While you don’t add any extra milk, any residue left in the pot and cup flavor the 2nd cup- I had chocolate in mine due to making drinking chocolate. Although this wasn’t true clean the pot chai because I added 2oz cold brewed coffee to the 6oz water. I’ll make a tru clean the pot chai later.

Cofftea

3rd infusion, 9 min. 8oz water. True clean the pot chai. Nothing added to the water.

Sigh… I still have my headache so I need something comforting w/ caffeine and a short steeping time (I have no patience waiting for tea when I’m not feeling well) so I went for this. Sadly I’m running very low on my sample… maybe another teaspoon if I’m lucky. :(

Ugh… 1st a cold that knocks me on my butt for over a week, then I have a headache for 18 hrs and counting. Steeped ROT’s Get Relaxed (8oz water for 9 min 20 sec) and used that to make my matcha hoping that’d get rid of my headache. Sad… my 1st matcha purchase is gone… :,(

drank Matcha Kaze by Den's Tea

1 scoop in my Yoplait light fat free black berry yogurt. Unfortunately the black berry was too strong for me to really taste the matcha, but this is a great breakfast or study break snack for when there’s no time to even make a bowl of matcha. Adding matcha to yogurt adds wonderful health benefits like the amino acid L-theanine, vitamins, minerals, protein, and fiber- along w/ a lil caffeine.

fcmonroe

That does sound really good. I’ll have to give that a try sometime.

Cofftea

I have vanilla yogurt in the frige that I bet would be even better. I was just hoping the matcha would come thru in the black berry one.

jennlea

I am really gonna need to get some good matcha. The stuff I have is crummy.

Cofftea

You should totally get some from Den’s. They’re giving away free Lucky Gold Tea w/ every purchase over $30. I can’t even begin to comprehend crummy matcha. What kind do you have?

jennlea

I honestly can’t tell what kind it is. Got it at an International Market just to try and it is nasty bitter junk.

Cofftea

Sad! I didn’t think bad matcha was even possible:( This is the only Den’s matcha I’ve tried, but I’m going to order the matcha Miyabi next time.

Shanti

Okay, you’ve inspired me to order some of this. Just wondering, what does matcha taste like? I’ve had matcha ice cream before, but never actual matcha tea. Is it bitter? Sweet? Savory?

LENA

great idea. i had some in a protein shake the other day and it was really good.

Cofftea

Shanti, it’s really all of the above. Different brands may be more sweet or savory but the combination is absolutely amazing! I can’t wait to read your review of it! I suggest getting it from Den’s and ordering something else to make a $30 order, then you get free Lucky Gold Tea!:)

New leaves. White chocolate spiced rum chai latte. 1tsp chai/1TB white chocolate creamer/1TB spiced rum creamer/3oz milk. I was hoping the white chocolate would bring out the complexity of the spices and the spiced rum creamer would increase them, but it didn’t work. Basically a sweet, slightly spicy milk w/ a very light tea taste.

2nd steep, 7 min. 1/2 water and 1/2 milk. Wow. Weird. Well the spice (at least the chili) showing up isn’t a problem, but there’s no tea flavor. The color barely even changed. Hot chili flavored milk… weird…

Same leaves from last nite. 2nd steep, 7 min, 6oz water + 1TB spiced rum creamer. I added spiced rum creamer instead of milk because I’m hoping it will give the chai the depth it was lacking clean. I increased the steeping time by 2 min instead of one to make sure that the chai stood up to the creamer since the 1st infusion was lighter than I expected. Disappointed. I think I might be getting a hint of warmth from the chili, but beyond that it’s just watered down spiced rum creamer.

3rd infusion, 8 min. Threw the ginger that I used to flavor my matcha (1.5g) in w/ it. Dull camel brown liquor which was actually darker than expected. Definitely a lot of ginger, but I’m also starting to get more of the other spices, especially the cinnamon. Surprisingly good.

drank Mandarin Matcha by 52teas

Woke up REALLY FREAKIN COLD! The wind chill was -20 last nite (not sure about this morning) and mom forgot to pay the propane bill so we had no heat this morning. Thank God the guy could be here by 8:30. So I needed an extra warm feeling in my mouth besides just hot matcha. So I added some ginger. 1.5g steeped in 8oz water for 3min then added that w/ a scoop of matcha to my bowl. The ginger didn’t really affect the tast too much, just bit my tongue a bit and took away some of the sweetness of the matcha. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love this matcha, but I do think it’s just a tad too sweet and this balances it out perfectly.

Preparation
180 °F / 82 °C

For 20+ years, my Father-in-law was the guy that the State Police/County Sheriff/Red Cross called to come fill a tank when someone ran out of propane at 3am in the middle of a blizzard…I hope you offered the propane guy something warm to drink.

Got a bit of this from Carolyn!=D A lot have you have probably heard me talk about this one. I love a chai w/ chili and this one is even better because it doesn’t have any licorice or fennel. My only beef is that it’s decaf. Caffeine and tea to me are kinda like alcohol and beer (except I don’t drink beer lol) to me, unless there’s a medical reason or religious conviction not to consume the 1st, I don’t see a reason not to:)

I tweaked the steeping parameters just a bit. Because some of the weight is spices, I used 1tsp (~2.5g) and heated the water to just below boiling because I didn’t want to kill the health benefits of the tea.

Taken clean. Inspite of using slightly more tea than suggested the liquor is a dark reddish brown, lighter than I expected. The aroma is typical of a chai. Hmmm… Interesting… The tea base is quite strong and spice is the chili. The other spices provide a light warmth, but are lighter than in most chais I’ve had. I’ll have it w/ milk tomore before giving my final decison.

Are you a company or tea blender on sites like Adagio that would you like your tea reviewed? If so, please e-mail me @ [email protected].

What I most enjoy from obtaining samples from companies to review is that it helps me to better learn to drink and review teas from a more objective perspective, meaning more of the “This tea is…” point of view rather than the “I like/don’t like” this tea. I feel objectivism in tea reviews is EXTREMELY important because no two tea drinkers tastes are exactly the same. I’ve also been extremely surprised by several teas. I love recieving a sample I think I will be only writing an objective review on, only to completely fall in love with it upon tasting it.

Tea tastes:
I will ALWAYS pick loose leaf over tea bags. I only drink bagged tea if that’s my only choice or I find a flavor that I can’t find a loose leaf version for. When I do drink bagged; however, I always weigh my bag and am constantly curious as to the weight/flavor ratio- sometimes I am quite surprised by the flavor punch of light bags.

I have a preference for organic and fair trade teas (preferably both), but would never pass up an amzing tea just because it isn’t organic and/or fair trade.

I love savory teas.

I’m currently searching for a chai flavored soy powder or a soy based chai mix (either already mixed or a recipe).

I hardly EVER sweeten my teas. I feel that sweeteners (unless flavored like tea honeys, brown sugar, ice cream topping syrups, flavored coffee syrups, etc) do not add anything to the flavor profile of tea- in fact, I’ve found that they dumb down the flavors.

I NEVER serve my tea over regular iced cubes- I always make tea cubes.

I LOVE cooking w/ tea and making smoothTEAS.

I LOVE tea blending.

I rarely drink herbal teas unless they are mixed with true teas. My favorite herbals to mix with true teas are: spearmint, peppermint, lemongrass, rose hips, and gingeroot.

I can’t stand anything w/ fennel or anise. Hot black teas (except orange pekoe bagged tea that you get when you go out to eat and chai teas) tend to upset my stomach.

I drink matcha daily and love flavoring it. I’m also in a constant search of preflavored matchas.

I’m constantly searching for information on how to prepare tea authentically according to its country of origin.

My Tasting Notes Ratings (edited 8/8/10)
1: I can’t even stand the raw leaf enough to make this (I’ve never owned a tea w/ this rating, but I’ve smelled some before buying resulting in me NOT buying them that were that bad)

2: I steeped this tea but couldn’t stand the aroma enough to get it past my nose

3: I immediately gagged at the 1st sip and spit it out.

4: I manageed to get the 1st sip down, but I tossed the rest.

5: I drank the 1st cup but I can’t bring myself to resteep

6: Made it thru the entire set of infusions but I can’t bring myself to tinker w/ the parameters and won’t be making it again.

7-10: Does not taste anything like the ingredients or name suggests (i.e. Adagio’s Sour apple)

11-25: I can taste some of the ingredients, but the flavor is severely lacking

25-49: Teas that I would not consider bad in their flavor profile, but certainly below average

50: Average.

51-69: Teas above averge, but I wouldn’t go as far as calling them “good”.

70-75: Very good, but still room for improvement

76-85: Above average flavor profile

86-90: REALLY good flavors

91-99: Almost PERFECTLY achieves the goal of the ingredients and name of the tea.

100: Abosolutely perfect teas!
