From Verdant Tea

A warm and comforting take on classic Genmaicha with the addition of Wuyi oolong and cacao nibs. . . .

Genmaicha has humble origins- originally toasted rice was mixed into a pot to make expensive tea leaves go further in a time of less plenty than today. Toasted rice was combined with green tea or even broken twigs and stems to make a hearty and warming brew. At the time, green tea was for more widely available than black tea, but given the warming qualities of genmaicha, we thought that a humble hand-picked black tea from Laoshan Village would be the perfect companion for toasted rice.

This batch of Laoshan black is particularly malty and sweet, qualities drawn out by hand-crafted Minnesota wild rice and organic fair trade jasmine rice toasted in small batches. We add organic cacao nibs to give a darker and more comforting aftertaste, and a touch of Shui Jin Gui Wuyi oolong for its nutty caramel notes and savory aftertaste. All together, we think this new take on Genmaicha very much embraces the tea’s humble origins and stays true to the warm and satisfying nature of toasted rice tea.

Western Style
Use 4g of tea (about 1T) in 6-8oz of fresh-boiled (205°F) filtered or spring water. Steep for 30 seconds in a brew basket or equivalent. Enjoy many infusions. Add 10-15 seconds with each steeping, or to taste.
This tea is very forgiving, so feel free to use more leaf and slightly shorter steep times for more potent tea. It brews up equally well in small quantities as it does in big pots. This tea can also be enjoyed with a meal since it is so hearty and rich.

Iced Tea (Cold Brewing)
Use about 4 grams of tea for every 12oz of water. Combine with room temperature water in a covered vessel and refrigerate for 8-12 hours. Enjoy!

Iced Tea (Flash Chilled)
Use 1TB (5 grams) of tea in a 6-8oz vessel. Steep for 1 minute with filtered boiled water. Fill a martini shaker (or equivalent) with ice, then add brewed tea and shake until well-chilled (usually 10-30 seconds). Pour out through martini-shaker top over fresh ice in a new glass and serve.

I’ve been seeing this one raved about by various Steepsterers, so I needed to try the sample that Terri Harplady sent over! thanks so much! I’m not in love with Laoshan Black, and hopefully I don’t end up liking it more, since I’d rather there be a COUPLE teas I don’t actually like! I can’t like them all! This one sounded divine… the chocolate pieces I had to try very hard to not gobble up (hopefully I’ll be devouring enough Halloween candy in the next few days anyway.) There was about three teaspoons in my sample so I went with a teaspoon and half this time around, so I’d have another steep session for later.

Steep #1 // a few minutes after boiling // 3 min
I was pleased that this one had the oolong I’ve tried separately that reminds me of pumpkin – that might have been the lower steep time however. It seemed the flavors would work well together! The flavor is better to me that Laoshan Black on its own. All of the elements give it more depth and strength. Maybe one day my palate can appreciate the Laoshan on its own, but I like my black teas stronger these days. But this is lovely. The chocolate and the rice add subtle touches, while the oolong does give it a pumpkin-like flavor. Very appropriate for the time of year! I’ve never really seen a rice like this before either.

Steep #2 // just boiled // 3 min
This cup was just as good as the first. I do like this blend more than the Laoshan black own, since there is more depth. These three extra ingredients really enhance the flavors that are already sort of in the Laoshan Black anyway. I can see this working for a nice base for many blends.

I want to say that my tasting notes are usually very matter-of-fact which probably get boring but I do very much appreciate everyone’s tasting notes — usually much better than mine! I thought when I started that Steepster was just a way for my own brain to remember how I liked a tea or steeping parameters, so I’m honored if anyone is actually reading these things.

Stephanie

Your notes are always very thorough :) I appreciate thoroughness when deciding if I want to try a new tea or not!

caile

Yes, your tasting notes are great! :-)

Dexter

I actually read tasting notes!! I find it fascinating how different people perceive the same teas differently.
I love both this and Laoshan Black. I find it interesting that you don’t care for Laoshan Black.
That’s what I love about Steepster is seeing all the different opinions. :))

MissB

I’ll chime in too – I love your tasting notes, and I read them (and many others) as I drink my own teas for ideas, inspiration, and sometimes with more than a bit of envy. ;)

tea-sipper

aww!! Thanks everyone :D

Starfevre

Notes in my feed are great for stories. Notes when I’m researching or about to drink a tea are great for figuring out what I should be looking for. I like it both ways!!

I was actually craving a cup of this earlier today

Plunkybug

This is one I want to try.

Crowkettle

It’s soo good, and now it’s the only thing I want to drink. I deeply regret only getting a little sample pack on Black Friday, whereas I opted for 1oz of Vanilla Citrus Spice (which I ended up liking, but why!?).

Terri HarpLady

I meant to bring this one over to Tony’s, & just realized I left it on the counter.
Of course, I only live 5 minutes from here…

Second sample tested from the swap with Terri HarpLady thank you again !
This is a gorgeous blend : lovely rice and flower mixed with the dark leaves, it smells cocoa and earthy.

At first sip, no doubt : this is a malty & roasty tea and a genmaïcha tea.I get the rice sweet taste mixed with chocolatey notes.
The aftertaste remains mostly genmaïcha to me.

This is perfectly blended, I really like it, thank you Terri.

Omg, I forgot I had this one! Guess I know what I’m brewing up in the next few minutes (that is, assuming I can find it in the post-moving tea disaster…)

Sounds great!

Glad you like it! I really enjoy this one as well, & will need to order more of it soon! :)

This is so good. ohmigod I love this stuff. I’ve got enough for one more cup – saving it for tomorrow. I will definitely have to order this again. Chocolate and toasted rice makes a great warming cup this chilly evening.

Terri HarpLady

I just ordered more of this one last Friday, I’ve actually been craving it for a couple of weeks!

I’ve been trying to hold off ordering, but this is just too delicious.

You all know that I LOVE and I mean LOVE Laoshan black tea. When I saw this blend pop up a while ago, I knew that I couldn’t go wrong trying it! This tea seems to be a little bit more mild compared to straight Laoshan black. It does have that chocolate note, but you sort of have to look for it. It’s also much more savory and nutty – I think of it like a snack/meal and less like a chocolate dessert. The entire cup is smooth with a roasted/woodsy quality in the background. I could see this blend pairing very well with food and I’m not much for food/tea pairing in general! I’m not sure if I would buy more of this one only because I like the original Laoshan black more. This is definitely a satisfying and hearty blend!

Dexter

“I think of it like a snack/meal and less like a chocolate dessert”. Love that comment – that is so true. Well said. :))

Our house finally sold today!!!!! I am celebrating by drinking this tea, and ordering more of it. :) I have never gone through a single tea as fast as I’ve gone through this one. (not counting samples, of course) I still have a bit left , which I have been hoarding. Tea buying hiatus is now over!! I resisted for several months (with only one order thrown in there somewhere). Quite proud of myself!

This tea is just. So. Great. Can’t wait to compare it to the Imperial Breakfast I ordered- I remember loving that one as much as I love this one.

Bonnie

Congrat’s! Celebration is in order! Now you can afford more tea!!!!

Rellybob

Exactly my sentiment, Bonnie. More tea! :) Thanks for the congrats. It’s a huge weight gone to have sold the house!

Bonnie

Are you staying in the area or moving somewhere great like Fort Collins Colorado (had to slide in a commercial for my hometown!)?

Rellybob

We are staying where we are. Lots of work for the hubby here! I’m not from the prairie like he is ( I’m from Minnesota) but I like it here. We always end up going to the mountains on vacation, however. :)

Earth day! Customary to Earth Day for me, here is some metal music about Earth Day http://youtu.be/Uh8XAsS0vvU

I’ve been dragging around all day, just really tired. The weather has been hot, my allergies have been kicking in and making today kinda yuck.

YUM! This tea is super yummy! Laoshan black chocolate genmaicha is soooo dark chocolatey with some nutty, malty and roasty. It’s comfort food and luxury in a tea cup!

I can’t believe I have only one tea note on this one considering I drink this all the time. I alternate this one with Laoshan Black to take in my Timolino almost every day. They both hold up exceptionally well in the Timolino. This tea is the best parts of Laoshan Black with added chocolate-y goodness and the roasty toastiness of rice. I’ve seen some people mention the oolong – either I enjoy the oolong, or I just don’t notice it.

Love this one too!

Fjellrev

Ha, I just had this a while ago too, and I haven’t even written a note on it at all yet despite having it quite a few times already. Go figure, eh?

Hope that annotated bibliography is going well. Talk about busywork.

Nicely done!

I seem to be struggling figuring out a way to get my cupboard under control. (I know I know stop buying tea – but that’s not really what I mean). Do you drink old tea first, do you sample new teas first, do you drink sipdowns first, how do you fit FAVORITES into the mix? I have a ton of favorite teas, I have a ton I’ve never tried, I have quite a few nearing sipdown and suddenly I’m just overwhelmed with choices and possibilities. How do you choose what to drink?
Anyway – that’s how I was feeling, so I just took the easy way out and let my dashboard inspire me. Seems like this was the “tea of the day” – at least earlier today – so that’s what I’m drinking. (It also helps to have quite a bit on the way).
I don’t have much more to say about this one – it’s fantastic!!!! Tonight it seems more bitter dark chocolate – sometimes it’s sweeter than this, but it’s all good. Toasty, roasty, puffed wheat esque amazing. This is a definite keeper and I’m so happy it came back in stock.

Terri HarpLady

I can totally relate to this post, & I made my decision today pretty much the same way :)

Kaylee

I’ve given up trying to approach my cupboard with anything like a plan. I vaguely try to get sipdowns in over the weekend. Beyond that it’s just “what flavors/level of caffeine am I in the mood for?”.

….and that is how I ended up with 189 teas.

TheTeaFairy

Well you already know my approach, drink some favourites EVERY DAY!!! :-)
(And “quite a bit” is a semi-shitload, congrats!)

boychik

If I got swap or new sample I try it first. It’s like I got your tea and I enjoy it. I need to let ppl know that I care what they send me. Not everything at once of course. I hardly have any sip downs. In the morning and by night I drink only some thing I really want, not because I have to. I want to start and finish the day on a good note.

Dexter

As much as I LOVE swapping, and totally appreciate the generosity of this amazing community – swapping is a big part of what got me in trouble boychik. I spent a lot of time drinking samples people had sent me – and yes, fun, awesome – but I wasn’t drinking any of MY tea (or at least not much) – suddenly I haven’t even tried half my stash, because of course I didn’t stop buying. I’ve slowed the swapping and really don’t have that many samples here that people have sent me, but suddenly I’m faced with MY out of control stash and don’t know where to start…
LOL Kaylee – I would LOVE to be able to get back to 189…. I keep saying NO NEW TEA until I get under 200 – that never seems to happen.
Oh well I really should just be happy with all the amazing tea that I’m surrounded with – but some days it just seems overwhelming.

Stephanie

I sip through swaps slowly, to savor them and also to gives time to drink whatever I am craving :)

Kaylee

I tend to go through swaps a little faster than my own purchases, only because swaps are more likely to have scent contamination issues.

boychik

I agree Stephanie. If not swaps I wouldn’t even know about many wonderful teas I owe. They also prevent me from unnecessary purchases. I don’t swap a lot. Do you put samples in cupboard too? I used to, then stopped. Only if it’s huge sample.

Dexter

I totally agree, swapping is the best way to get to try new teas, find some gems you would have otherwise missed, avoid buying some misses that you probably would have. Swapping is awesome, but I’ve been through phases where I’ve had 100 samples that people sent me all at once… Moderation is all I’m saying – all good things in moderation. :))

sherapop

I have not got into swapping, and I’m not sure that I ever will. I think that I would rather continue acquiring small envelopes or samples directly with orders. I might become completely overwhelmed if I got into the swapping thing as well. My Blazing New Rating suite a while back was helpful because it narrowed down my choices (I had vowed only to drink teas about which I had not written any tasting notes), but you are right: I want to drink my favorite teas as well! Maybe I need to have a combination approach, sort of like boychik’s. Ending the day on a chamomile soliflore note, as I did tonight, is always a good idea!

Terri HarpLady

My approach changes from day to day, based on my mood, the amount of time I have, etc. Right now I’m sitting on samples sent by friends, plus samples I ordered, so many samples I haven’t tried yet! I usually start with a black tea I already love, then sample some things for the rest of the day, maybe having something flavored in the afternoon, but for awhile I was trying to drink one tea from each genre each day: black, green, oolong, puerh…etc

Really, my main goal is just to enjoy drinking tea & not put pressure on myself. I’m so excited to try every tea in my cupboard, & I will…eventually :)

ohfancythat

I’m in the same boat! I like going through samples because a) I have a lot of old ones from before I got pregnant and couldn’t stand the thought of drinking tea for awhile and then b) a bunch of sweet souls sent me a ton more once I got back into tea….leaving me with a LOT of samples to go through.

So helpful to have those to narrow down what I actually love vs what I thought I’d love but didn’t, so no money wasted!
And sample sipdowns are so satisfying and easy. Makes my number go down and makes me feel better.

But in the meantime, I didn’t stop buying tea, and my relatives just brought me massive amounts of tea I had shipped to them in the states, so I really need to work on those, while they’re still fresh. And get rid of some older ones, that are not so fresh.

I got 99 problems….

TeaLady441

Dexter – I’m in the same boat as well! I’m trying not to get crazy with swaps because I don’t want to open tea I buy until I’ve had sip-downed the tiny little samples bags that are taking up so much room and inflating my numbers! :P So I try to rotate between sipping down those samples, (highest priority), drinking opened teas that I enjoy, and drinking brand new teas. (lowest priority)

Virginia

I always fill my two timolinos with what I’m craving out of my own stash in the morning. I then pick the swap teas and samples I want to go through throughout the day and bring a few with me to work, choosing a variety according to what I think I may feel like having. When I come home, I drink whatever I want. That way I am going through my own stash, and trying new things throughout the day as well. That’s the only way I’ve been able to keep everything under control so far.
