Perhaps I under-steeped this one, because although pleasant, it was unremarkable to me.
I make home-made snickerdoodles with cream cheese and roll the balls in a mixture of cinnamon and sugar…I tasted no cinnamon, and if snicker doodles? …very generic :-/
Sorry Verdant…

Bonnie

You have to steep this at least 3 minutes or longer and sweeten it. (I added cream too…to get a more cookie taste but without is ok). Short steeping these blends is too bland.

CelebriTEA

thank you Bonnie!
I will try again…steep longer and add cream :~)

Happy New Year!

This still isn’t tasting right again. Is it my Finnium, or something else? Tastes bitter and a bit off, with less cocoa than I remember.

Preparation

CelebriTEA

My last batch wasnt as good as the first, but it is still one of my favorites.

Hm. There’s something off about this today. Something bitter in the fennel is my guess? I don’t get it. I think my tastebuds are off. Boooo….

Interestingly, the bit of this that I got from (I think) CelebriTEA had zero chocolate or cacao or whatever in it. This blend that I just got direct from Verdant? Full of big pieces of what looks and tastes like something cocoa-ish. I think I like this blend more.

Okay, so I enjoy this so much that I caved and bought some Verdant last night. 2 oz of this in that order. It definitely helped kick whatever stomach ick I’ve been fighting the past week.

Glad you’re feeling better!

VariaTEA

Everyone is buying tea! I want to place an order and I think it is because I miss getting tea mail so I am itching for something new. Meanwhile, I have like 8 swaps going and at least two orders on their way.

MissB

I’m in the same boat — I’ve sent out about $100 in shipping’s worth of packages last week, and… still only a small dent in my cupboard. It’s hard to avoid tea shopping!

VariaTEA

I was able to avoid placing orders because I know that in the swaps I have teas from different companies. I figure I should try the teas first and that way know if I like it and should buy more or I don’t like them. I was going to buy the Choco Honeyberry from Steep City but the shipping was insane which made me lose interest. Same goes for Whispering Pines S’mores.

MissB

Ah, I would’ve sent you some S’mores had I known.

VariaTEA

Haha. Of course you would, you are a tea enabler. Although I am sure I will eventually try it.

OMGsrsly

For me, I’m not buying but if I run out of something I love, I will re-stock. It’s a decent justification, and I’ve been good so far!

Hung out with a friend last night who has been fighting a cold for som time now, and now I’m feeling a bit off myself. Time to crack out the elderberry! Steeped this just over 18 minutes, and it’s still delicious, although I am getting more licorice than previous incarnations.

So… my last sample (that was a sipdown) came from OMGsrsly. This sample (a full pouch!) came from CelebriTEA. Wowza! So glad I love this.

Working on transitioning to a brand new laptop. Whee! I just wish it were a bit easier. Win 8 is a bit… weird. Love the keyboard though, and the actual laptop itself. And so, I’ll be up late tweaking. May even set up the new printer, too.

VariaTEA

I had to switch to Windows 8 a couple months back when I dropped my old laptop and I hated it at first but once you adjust, it is amazing. Hope you adjust soon!

JustJames

for me windows 8 boiled down to ’don’t overthink it’, now it’s easy. =0)

Dexter

I’m rebelling against Windows 8 – choosing to use the desktop not the apps…so far that’s working for me. (I still miss the start key)

MissB

You can get the start key again; I used a program called Iobit just now that basically got rid of all the crud the system auto-installed, and gave me my Start Menu back. That was really the only thing I had to have. :)

Tuscanteal

I wasn’t a fan either… it seems designed for a tablet, which isn’t what I have. I installed the interface that makes it look like classic windows though.

Thank you Sil for labeling our swap with your handle on them; I need to start doing this as well, and marking the ones I receive as I get them. Why? Because it could be one of four different people’s swaps. JustJames? CelebriTEA? akgrowngirl? OMGsrsly? I dunno. I also have several packets of this now, and huge thanks for that as well! It’s become a favorite.

The deep, dark purple in this makes me want to dye wool with it. I’m getting closer to my dream of dealing with wool from shearing to finished product, and I think when I get to dying my own wool, it’ll be with elderberries. http://sewnnatural.com/blog/2012/09/natural-dyeing-with-elderberry.html

Thanks to OMGsrsly for this lovely sample and swap earlier today! So much fun.

I may have steeped this for 20 minutes. Possibly. It is still delicious as-is. It’s a lovely dark purple — which makes me think I should try and figure out what it is that turns the tea this color, to dye wool with. It’s naturally sweet, zero astringency, full, with a bit of bite to it that isn’t hot, more zesty and sparkly. Hard to describe. Definitely on my to-order list.

I suddenly found myself in the mood for a chai.
I’d like to publicly thank the Devotea for setting me straight on chai making.
I poured some vanilla almond milk into a pot, turned in on low, added probably way more tea than would be recommended (basically, the rest of the contents of the envelope), & just let it sit there for awhile, checking to stir occasionally. You can disregard any lame reviews I’ve written about this chai in the past, because what I’m drinking now is f*@}!&g awesome!
And it’s a sipdown…uh…326, I think.

TeaTiff

So what is the “correct” way to make chai? I was always told to make it with water and add about 2 oz of milk to a 10oz of strongly brewed tea….

Sil

now you’re making me want to pick up a sample of this to try it again terri…

Terri HarpLady

I put 16 oz of vanilla almond milk in a pan on low, added a bunch of chai (like 4T, LOL), & just left it there for about 30 minute, stirring occasionally. Near the end I raised the heat a little until it was nice & hot, but not boiling. The only problem with using almond milk (or possibly other milks) is you can’t pour it through a finnum, it takes too long. I have a looser strainer that I poured it through instead, but it filtered it good enough.

Terri HarpLady

Oh, & maybe add some sweetener at the end.

Now part of me wants to try using this method with campfire blend & also laoshan chocolate genmaicha…just to see how they come out…

Hmmmm…..
Another Hot Chai Latte…this time I used 2 Tb in about 4oz of water, steeped for awhile, then added the ‘milk’, steeped a little longer, & I’m drinking it, it’s not bad, but I’m not sure how I feel about it. It has a mustard kind up under-taste, which is a little weird.

I put the leaves of both this & the laoshan village chai in the last of the milk, & it is simmering on low to try to get a little more flavor out of them.

Final Note: the resulting last cup, which was roughly 4oz, was actually pretty good, although I put way more Maple in it than I should have, LOL.

Bonnie

It’s the pepper I like. No cinnamon, pepper. (I mix it with puerh sometimes)

Terri HarpLady

I liked the Chai blend last year better, it was nice & gingery

Bonnie

You mean laoshan village chai or winter blend?

Terri HarpLady

The laoshan village

And this is another sipdown. (168 – with my Butiki order!)
I don’t know what it is, but I’m not really digging something in this blend. It’s ok, but it’s making my throat scratchy. I wonder if that means I’m allergic to something in the blend? Someone mentioned that earlier – maybe JustJames? in regards to rooibos?

Terri HarpLady

I have some of this sitting here, waiting to become a latte, probably later this afternoon as a reward for all my hard work.

I just finished up the last of this.
So sad. I would never have thought to add clove to Earl Gray even though clove is my favorite holiday spice…lol…Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter… I have a pineapple and
orange marmalade glaze that I spice the ham with and added cloves :-)
Mmmm…..not a better glaze anywhere :-)
I love Earl Grey Tea, and Verdant’s spicy variants are the best ever…in my book

I am truly not a mint Tea person, but I loved this.
The cacao nibs, fennel, cinnamon and two mints…
Well, it is remarkable…very FRESH tea

My granddaughter Schey is truly one of those special people (like MOST of you here on Steepster) with a giving heart…full of kindness and love. She loves me not in words, but with her time.

Nobody spends time with me other than her.

One of these days, she’ll be swept off her feet by someone that I know won’t be quite worthy of her…but that’s another story.

In the meantime, we have tea together, she calls me often…and yesterday she came over to bake with me.

Last year I decorated my home for Christmas and nobody came over. I felt bad. (This is something that happens to people when they get old) Young people are busy…(I know this) but it’s a hard reality to sit alone in a beautifully decorated room with your tea. Sigh…

I’ve learned to dig deeper into my heart this year. The source of my being happy is no longer dependent on having people around me, even though I do like it when I have a visit or when I go out to tea.

Schey is allergic to regular ‘Black Tea’. It makes her weep and she gets depressed and moody rather quickly. I’ve never seen anything like it. Puerh, green tea and oolong’s are all fine. I know the reason (too long to explain here).

When Schey arrived for our holiday baking, Pandora was set with classic crooners…Bing Crosby, Michael Buble, Nat King Cole…all the old tunes we could sing along ‘loudly’ in the kitchen. http://youtu.be/_ONkQD1uxkY

We made a double recipe of spice cake (grinding the spices ourselves) and then peanut butter chocolate fudge. http://flic.kr/p/ipxxdi

While the cakes were baking, we sat next to my Christmas tree and watched two recorded epidodes of Once-Upon-A-Time. http://flic.kr/p/ipwDAn

I made a combo tea: Peppermint Bark Herbal and loose Shu Puerh in a large pot.

I know this might sound strange to some people…but most chai’s and herbal blends taste great with loose puerh, especially with cream and honey or sugar. (This tea can be rebrewed once or twice)

The flavor of mint and spice with the puerh I chose (this one was mild) was festive. Perfect pairing for our afternoon! I brewed the tea 3 minutes…longish-yes…but I didn’t add lots of puerh, and the Herbal needs time to release (not the 1 minute suggested by Verdant).

Crafting a latte binds the herbal blend and puerh together into a rich, smooth holiday drink.

I took a picture of Schey. Her peanut butter chocolate dessert was going to both the servers at Happy Lucky’s Tea House and employees at the local Grocery Store. My cake is for tea with my 3 year old grandson’s.

Don’t you think that best memories we have are doing things with other people? This usually doesn’t cost much money, but takes some of our time.

Don’t forget to take pictures over the holidays. (So many people forget to record time with people they love and time is short!)

Wish I could bake together and have tea with all of you!

TheTeaFairy

«One of these days, she’ll be swept off her feet by someone that I know won’t be quite worthy of her…» this is such a statement of your love for her…
This review made me shed some tears…for totally different reasons, I can relate about this review, you know why I think :-)
Bonnie, I wished I could spend a Christmas eve in your company, you could teach me how to bake, and we could share a few cuppa togheter!!!

Sil

hugs If i was closer, I’d come visit for the holidays! :)

Bonnie

I never lie when I say that you are welcome!

JustJames

we have tea date at some point, i do believe, though e haven’t nailed down a date and time, lol.

Bonnie

You talkin to me James?!!!

JustJames

i am! i thought you invited me down last year to try out your local brilliant tea house….

ifjuly

this day sounds like heaven to me—hanging out together in a warm kitchen that smells of cake baking away in the oven, festive and special tea in pots to share, music from another time that makes one nostalgic, and a beautiful home with a loving grandmother. i am jealous of your granddaughter (my grandparents passed away quite some time ago…i miss my grandmother’s kitchen to thi day, more so than ever around the holidays).

Bonnie

I did! You should come here! Besides…there are other tea places to go to if you’re one of the secret Celestial Seasonings Tea drinkers (factory close by…), and tea houses in Boulder (Ku Cha, Dushanbe).

ifjuly

augh, now i’m thinking about her and well, hello there unexpected afternoon crying. thanks Bonnie (i do NOT mean that sarcastically). your posts are a treasure.

JustJames

there’s alot of that going around i think…. tis the season for a bit of weepy, ifjuly. nothing wrong with that. i miss my gran horribly. i have a whole jar of tea i’ll likely never drink because the smell reminds me of her… and the tin she made my last xmas cake in……

Bonnie

Every Christmas, it would be nice to share these memories on Steepster and with friends. Some people adopt an older person who’s alone. (The tea community seems especially kind to elders) I hardly know anyone my own age. 65 isn’t ancient, but some of my disabilities at times makes me feel 85 and then I snap back to 65 going on 30 again. Become the moments you enjoyed with parents and/or grandparents. Bake, put on music and sing. If you went to Church, Synagogue or some event this time of year with grandma, do so again and remember that love. You can become what you treasure.

ifjuly

Thanks JustJames. I know exactly what you mean about those smells and the tin, things like that. I’m sorry (but also happy in a way) you miss your grandmother too!

Bonnie, you’re right. The first few years I was on my own I kind of treated holidays like any other day—often worked overtime, didn’t cook or decorate, etc.—and in retrospect I think it was because I knew it would be painful, the contrast between what I could do just starting out alone with what I remembered. But slowly over the years I’ve become more festive, and I get a lot of enjoyment out of fashioning my own domestic rituals to look forward to seasonally and gradually cultivating my own family life. Trimming the tree, hanging and stuffing stockings, making certain dishes only once a year, and waiting until just the right time to play certain music, visiting people when we’re all cheerful because of the festive season…those things do make me feel like I have a home in this world.

I hope you have a wonderful holiday season! <3

Bonnie

Thank you! Not to be morbid, but one day (not too far off) my life as it is will end too. My treasure is measured in how much I love and the memories I leave with others. I am ever mindful of how precious time is. My life is Blessed every day with discovery and wonder!

tigress_al

I wish I would have known my grandmothers. I never got the chance :(.
I enjoy your beautiful stories of spending time with your grandchildren. They are so lucky to have a grandmother like you. They will cherish it forever.

boychik

i consider myself lucky because I knew my 3 great grandmas and 2 grandmas. unfortunately I have only one now, she is 89. I cherish those moments when i come visit her. its almost everyday. i think i love her more than my parents

Bonnie

I share stories to say..“Hay everybody, you will be where I am some day maybe…this is what you can do too. And if you don’t have a grandma, find one!” My own grandmother’s were dud’s. Really. I decided to be what they were not…like watching Hallmark Christmas Movies or It’s a Wonderful Life and deciding…“I want to create that kind of experience for my family!” You don’t wait for it, you make it happen.
When my mom was alive…the whole family went caroling in her neighborhood, pushing her wheelchair down the street. NOBODY came to their door to hear us!!! After awhile we began to giggle. It was so strange that nobody wanted to listen to us caroling that we sang even louder and laughed as we sang joyfully up and down that gloomy street.
You make it what it is in your heart no matter what is happening around you!

ifjuly

“You don’t wait for it, you make it happen.” and “You make it what it is in your heart no matter what is happening around you!” Such an awesome outlook, I agree. It reminded me of some of my lady friends who, when I got married and started packing bento lunches for my husband, were all like “I wish I had a wife to pack me awesome lunches I could look forward to every day!” And I said jovially “you can always be your own wife!” It’s easy to forget sometimes.

Bonnie

This is why I always have tea in my purse to share even when I go to my tea shop. Today, the owner shared a blend he created…then the manager made a free pot of tea with some spice and puerh. We’ve become family. I stopped in the cheese shop and bought a chunk of Earl Grey dusted cheese and ginger chocolate (I know the little shops around the tea house). I haven’t lost my sense of wonder and delight…the joy of life. Believe me though, it’s challenging at times to overcome depression and loneliness. I have to work on celebrating life.

Indigobloom

Bonnie, move to Toronto. I’d have tea with you all the time LOL

Bonnie

Thanks I heart-bloom! Thanks a look at my little grandsons who came over for tea at 8:30 AM this morning (man that’s early) on my Facebook Bonnie Johnstone. Merry Christmas!

CelebriTEA

This sounds so lovely ;~}

Smiles back to you! ;]

Not sure what I think about this one… the flavours were much milder than I had anticipated (which is good!), and nothing was unpleasant, but I can’t really taste the elderberry… or anything else specifically, for that matter. It’s just kind of a spicyish water. Maybe it’s partially related to the fact that I’m kind of sick, although I do seem to be able to taste reasonably well at the moment.

I think I’ll try steeping it for longer next time to see what happens. It did only get about a minute this time, as per the recommendations.

I love elderberry, but it is kind of a delicate flavour, so I can see how it could disappear in a tea.

Try longer steeps for most of verdants blends from the club. Almost none of them work well with recommended times ppl have found

Sipdown! 259/365!

Yep, not my favourite chai blend, though it gets points for being unique. And interestingly enough, I’m kind of getting that same baked goods cinnamon/ginger note from the previous blend, which is quite enjoyable. I really wonder what ingredient that might be from, because I like it. This is making my final cup of this blend more delicious than I expected!

72

Hmmm. Not sure what I think about this one. I’m getting quite a bit of pepperiness over a very dark, almost burnt-tasting base black. There are hints of chai-y flavours reminiscent of Chocolate Phoenix Oolong Chai (? that’s not right…), particularly in the aroma, which smells like gingerbread, but at least straight, it’s a bit too heavy on the black tea/peppery flavours for me. I’ll try it with milk/honey at some point, and I’m sure it will be divine, but at this point, it’s nothing special beyond Verdant blends I’ve already tried. (That said, it’s tasty. Just not overly different/special IMO.)

The first “Verdant Blends Club” tea that I’m reviewing! I have tried one of the others from the previous month… but can’t recall which it was, nor really what I thought of it… so I’ll have to try it again and write something later.

Of the 3 November teas, this one sounded the most interesting to me. Some of the ingredients in these blends are making me a bit hesitant – I tend to dislike a bunch of herbal add-ins that are used – but nothing here is an ingredient that I know I hate, and the previous Verdant blend that I’ve tried in which coriander was a feature ingredient was quite delicious.

Aroma-wise, I’m smelling a bit of toastiness, a creamy oolong, and definitely a gingerbready sort of aroma, which is probably the coriander (although why coriander comes off as gingerbread, I have no idea). Flavourwise, this is a delicious mash-up of oolong, genmaicha, and spice. The sip starts off with the spice, morphs into toasty genmaicha flavours, and ends with oolong and a bit of a spicy kick from… the cinnamon? I’m not really sure. Either way, this is quite a delicious blend. I’d like to compare it to… that other one with coriander (I sent some to my mom at some point, so I’m sure I can achieve this at Christmas); I’m not sure if I like the toasty oolong or green beany laoshan green better as a base tea.

I cancelled my blends box last month because I was going to save money for this month but when I saw the spoiler on Facebook for this month and I saw this one!! I HAD to order!
I drank this one all morning and all day. This morning I whipped up some French toast waffles and had this along side me. I was so hoping to have that cinnamon-y snicker doodle-esque flavor. But wow! Coriander and ginger! So powerful the first steep. The second steep was creamier and I got more of the cookie flavor. The coriander and ginger weren’t so strong but still there. The third steep the coriander and ginger were almost gone. It was a very very like clean steep:
While this wasn’t at all what I expected it was a nice experience. The second steep was definitely my favorite of the three. The first steep was steeped 1 minute, 2nd was 3 minutes and 3rd was 6mins. I highly recommend over leafing a tad bit and longer steeps. This one definitely needs a little sweetness to bring out the cookie flavors. I might have this one one more time and then probably add this to my stash that is being sold in a discussion:)

Bonnie

Exactly…longer, more leaf and sweet!
