We dressed up in mild cosplay and went to a Star Trek themed afternoon tea at a local tea shop, and it was so tasty and cute! They carry teas from NM Tea Co, and we got to try two of them along with our treats! Unfortunately, this chai was pretty weak. It had no power, just meh and forgettable.
I just had to try this Yunnan from New Mexico Tea Co. It isn’t hard to try their teas when you can buy an ounce, which to me is the perfect amount of tea to sample something and have it a few times. This is CLASSIC Yunnan. A nice balance of gold and black to the twisted together leaves. I used a teaspoon and a half and the first steep has that lovely peppery Yunnan flavor. Definitely a tea to reach for when I am craving Yunnan, which is often. Not QUITE up to the standard of London Tea Room’s Ancient Golden Yunnan (trying to find one to replace that one) but I also didn’t use two teaspoons for this one like I do with that one, so maybe it would be similar if I steeped it the same way. The second steep was a little too weak flavored for my liking.
Steep #1 // 1 1/2 teaspoons for a full mug // 20 minutes after boiling // 2 minute steep
Steep #2 // just boiled // 4 min steep
Ashmanra’s sipdown challenge – September 2024 Tea #8 – September 27 – World Tourism Day: have a tea from a place you want to visit or have visited
There are many places I could dream of visiting at some point, but I also needed a tea with some kick this afternoon, so this is the one. Of course Scotland would be great to visit. I bought this from NM Tea co, hoping that it was like the English Tea Store blend that I really liked YEARS ago, and I think it is. The blend is part CTC but also a mix of a slightly bigger leaf, just like English Tea Store’s from years ago. Twelve years ago I gave English Tea Store’s Scottish Breakfast a rating of 96! I’d say that is excellent for a tea that is partially CTC. This one here is quite tasty, quite strong and perfect tasting for breakfast. The description mentions the dry quality, like a cask of Scottish bourbon. I will at least imagine that it is a match to English Tea Store’s blend, as I think some of their teas are sourced from the same place.
This was what I chose as a sample with my small order — thanks, New Mexico Tea Co! I’m always looking for great white teas… it’s always good to have a handful of those in the collection. I LOVED the name of this one, and the image on the pouch was perfect for it too. I had three great steeps with this one — it started a little like creamed corn. Then steeps two and three could have fooled me in a blind test… it was like drinking two cups of milk. Surprisingly, despite the hairy inspired name of this tea, trichomes didn’t really make themselves apparent here. I’m surprised how delicate the flavor was, even on that third steep. It’s a friendly yeti.
Steep #1 // 1 1/2 – 2 teaspoons for a full mug // 40 minutes after boiling // 1 minute steep
Steep #2 // 30 minutes after boiling // 2 minute steep
Steep #3 // 10 min after boiling // 3-4 min
Flavors: Cream, Milk, Sweet Corn
This was a sample from NM Tea co! Thanks! It went along with a small order. I had been meaning to try this for a WHILE and have since forgotten which tea I specifically wanted to compare this to. It might have been Lupicia’s Earl Grey Chocolat, but the ingredients are not the same, so I’m not sure if it was that one. I also know I have tried NM’s Cream Earl in the past and I was not a fan. However, that WAS a sample from a swap, so I didn’t get to try it at its freshest. So who knows how I would really feel about it. THIS tea is pretty good! It really does somehow taste like Lupicia’s Chocolate Earl… I could swear the bergamot tastes like the bergamot that Lupicia uses. This one has big chocolate chips and rose petals that Lupicia’s does not have. But searching for a current ingredient list on Lupicia, I’m not seeing it. I don’t really notice the rose here. The chocolate is a bit.. only a HINT.. bordering on that alcohol flavor that chocolate tea sometimes has. The black tea might be a LITTLE thinner than I would wish, which is why I like that Lupicia’s uses some CTC. But otherwise the flavors melding here are great and what I wanted and expected… I would say it is an acceptable replacement for Lupicia’s when I run out of it. I forgot to check if the chocolate chips actually melted before tossing the leaves…
I bought a pack of this for fifty cents at a garage sale! The flavor is quite tart and similar to other sour red fruit blends. It’s pleasant iced and better with a shorter steep. Sometimes it’s jello-like. Some steeps are quite nice, and others are super average. It’s a good tea for summer!
Ha I bought a bunch of teas from her actually, all sealed and fifty cents! I love a garage sale find, though this is the first time it’s been tea!
Wow! I have found some pretty good teaware at estate sales including a valuable yixing pot for $6, but never good tea! Maybe a box of Lipton bags…
One thing I did not expect when brewing this today that it would turn out almost Greenish Gray! I was worried I understeeped it due to the light color and had to double check it was a Black tea and not a green.
The flavor is light but noticeable. I would highlight this as a cleansing, “pretty” tea. It’s fragrant in smell and taste but not perfumey. It’s nicely balanced. Does remind me of clear and tranquil waters. They chose a good name for it - although I don’t see “blue”. The juniper berries are first
I will enjoy drinking the rest of this mini sampler, but probably do not love enough for a big order.
TTB Review #36: After only about 3 hours of sleep last night, I needed something STRONG to start off my day. This tea seemed to have done the trick. I can tell that there’s plenty o’ honey, but I’m also getting strong grape notes, which I didn’t realize at first until I saw one of the other reviews mention it. The moment I read that I was like, “Yes, 100% artificial grape!” Not the biggest fan but this morning all I want is just a strong bolt of caffeine, so it’ll do.
Flavors: Artificial, Grapes, Honey
I love fall and fall flavors, but many of them end up a disappointment. I tried this one after clocking out of work and relaxing on the porch with my Kindle Fire and playing some of the very addicting Homescapes game. Brewed a large TB in 6 oz in a tea pot to keep moving in my cup.
Many maple blends and fall blend come across too spicy – this one lists cinnamon and that is clear right away, but it’s not an artificial or candy type cinnamon. There is not pepper in this blend, and it’s a very good blend of spice that is subtle but not distracting. The Maple was at first a little subtle although the strongest note, but got stronger and sweeter the more I drank. Just for kicks, added a touch of Maple Syrup to enhance.
I did steep at first at 3 minutes but that’s a bit too weak. I recommend up to 5 with this one re-added for another few minutes while sipping and that strengthened.
It said to brew at 212, but I did the “oolong” setting on my electric kettle since it is an oolong tea. Will try at 212 later to see if there is a difference.
Very good and very “fall” feeling. Another winner so far from trying from this company.
Preparation
This was my first sampler of this company based on a recent semi-large order. I am a big smoked tea fan, and have become very much a fan of earl greys the past two years.
The website does not list all the ingredients, but according to the package it is: Lapsang Souchong, Keenum, Yunnan, Bergamont Flavoring, and White tea. Updated the listed on Steepster.
I tried it yesterday first but the pairing of food was a disaster. I enjoy eating cheeses and sometimes crackers with cheese, I find that they compliment tea without altering the flavors, probably because of the creaminess of the cheeses and sometimes the buttery crackers. My mom gifted me with a ghouda cheese with pepper, and I dug into both at the same time. A mistake. This ghouda cheese had chilies (???), so the pepper in this case did not make me trust the sampler as it was too spicy. I got the smoke, but was thinking the cheese was overpowering any earl grey.
So, today, second sampler. 6 oz water with 1 tbsp and I kept the brew at the recommendation of 4 minutes. This is a STRONG tea. It is only for Smoke fans. It is not “mild smokiness”. The Lapsang is the predominant tea certainly. The last ingredient listed is white tea, which I don’t get, unless they use to soften or that is how they add in the Earl Grey.
Speaking of which, the earl grey part is very small. I sense it today but it is more of the last note of the sips, and not the main when first drinking. It is smoke, then pleasant and smooth black tea, then some mild earl grey.
Very enjoyed! Would go great on evenings with porch reading, a cozy blanket, and non-spicy sharp cheddar :D
Preparation
Reading this just made me want cheese lol!
Also, I really love Lupicia’s Earl Grey Grand Classic if you ever want a more subtly smoky Earl Grey. :)
Haha happy to spread around the cheese cravings :D
And thanks for the recommendation of another to try
Ooooh that cheese sounds good! Now I wanna eat cheese paired with a Lapsang. The idea of a smoky EG is intriguing to me, but the Keemun puts me off since I’m not a big fan. What an unusual blend!
This tastes a lot more grapey than I expected. It’s also quite floral, which I guess is the honey. It seems pretty high quality and interesting, though it’s not exactly my preferred sort of flavor profile. Thanks to the TTB for this sample!
I just ordered the Pisces sampler set from them – love their ideas of samplers, and two others. Don’t have Honey Black, but am excited to try the samplers from this company.
I hope they’re good! This company is local to me, but I don’t really buy from them since the majority of the teas they sell are from other companies and not their own blends. I think I’ve generally enjoyed the ones I’ve tried though!
This is the first tea I’ve tried with bee pollen in it. What a unique concept. But the flavor starts off too weird. Reminds me of wet dog. Rotting logs mixed with wet stinky workout clothes. As those flavors subside you begin to taste the honey notes which are very nice despite the notes before them. The liquor aroma is the same. This could work but I think it would have to be mixed with something else to cover those initial flavors.
Sample grabbed from a TTB. I’m not a coconut fan, but I actually really like this. The coconut is so fresh and strong and a bit naturally sweet. It can survive a decently long steep. It’s really good! Only nice things to say about this one, and this company is right in town if I want more.
For a decaf EG, this is pretty impressive! The bergamot is strong and clear. The black tea is hearty enough to not be disappointing. With my usual amount of milk and sugar, this is quite the satisfying cup of tea!
For some bizarre reason as I was quickly scrolling by, I thought this was called “Earl Grey Disappointed”! I was momentarily saddened, but then realised my mistake haha.
I didn’t expect to enjoy this, but I’ll always try a new tea box herbal. There’s a shocking level of throat spice from this tea. Other than that, it’s quite watery and thin. It’s like taking a shot of cayenne and black pepper water. There are a ton of other ingredients, but none of them show up. This is super weird and not at all pleasant. I only drank a few sips. It was even worse cool.
Sometimes I am really in the mood for licorice, sometimes I am absolutely not. I bought this last year, and I’m just trying it now (I guess I haven’t been in the mood for licorice). Black licorice seems to fit with spooky season for me, so I decided to finally give this a try. I was actually pleasantly surprised by how tasty it is. Much more soft and delicate than I expected.
Heeey White Antlers, where are you? Thanks for this herbal tea!
Tastes like twilight in the high desert. Look to the stars and breathe in the sky. The unmistakable aroma of scrubby shrubs, dry grass, juniper, hard earth still retaining the heat of the day. Stray rosehips and lemongrass.
<3 fond <3
Excellent cold brew, almost syrupy. Very nice hot as well, a classic herbal tea taste and body.
Flavors: Dry Grass, Herbal, Lemongrass, Pine, Rosehips, Tangy
Have you ever licked a cedar chest? Can’t say I have. But I wouldn’t put it past the toddler version of myself to do so. This tea is fairly heavy with cedar influence when it comes to the flavor. The aroma, however, initially when the hot water hits it is woodsy. Then it changes to a strange medicinal pitch with a hint of vaseline… Luckily that went away pretty quickly and morphed into fresh barn hay. The flavor for the first 3ish sessions was stone fruit with cedar backdrop and after that became more woodsy. Around the 5th or 6th is was very cedar in flavor. The mouthfeel almost makes me feel as is Ive licked a cedar chest.
