From New Mexico Tea Company

The true candy-like spice character of the cardamom comes through in the cup. Lovely aroma.

EXTRA INFO:
It is easy to understand why this highly aromatic spice is sometimes called the “queen of spices”. Bite open a pod – the flavor will fill your mouth and a warm sensation will spread throughout your body. Cardamom is a cooking staple in many Eastern countries and is second only to black pepper in terms of usage worldwide. The first historical mention of cardamom dates to the 4th century BC in the writings of Greek Physician Theophrastus who claimed the pods had medicinal value. Modern usage of the spice however stems from the cultures of southern India. The people there held the spice in such high regard that they used it as an offering to the gods during religious ceremonies.

Black tea, cardamom

Back when I was still eating grains, I used to make an awesome breakfast cereal in the crockpot overnight. It was steel cut oats, a mix of water & knudsen’s peach/apple juice (or apple juice), slices up dried apricots, & cardamom pods. In the morning I’d saute some frozen peaches in a skillet, with a little more cardamom, to add to the bowls. It was one of the favorite breakfasts in my house, topped with a little vanilla soymilk (or french vanilla soy creamer), & maybe even some toasted pecans or walnuts.

So the Cardamom in this is really reminding me of that. I really miss breakfasts like that, but I don’t miss my guts hurting. On the other hand, a bowl of warm peaches sprinkled with cardamom & a few toasted nuts is still a nice occasional treat. I like Cardamom. I don’t use it often.

This tea was decent, especially when I added a little stevia to bring out the spice. Thanks to my tea sister Sil for the generous sample!

TheTeaFairy

Yum, I might try that recipe! Never thought of the crockpot as a breakfast maker, great idea:-)

Terri HarpLady

Oh, the crockpot is great for cooking breakfast cereals! I used to set it every night before bed. There was the peach one above. I did a similar one with Diced apples, steel cut oats, apple juice, & cinnamon stick. I also made savory congee in the crock, using short grain brown rice. In the morning I’d stir in spinach or other greens, & make a savory soy sauce with garlic, ginger, etc to drizzle over it. Top with crispy onions, nuts, baked tofu, tempe, or whatever you like. I miss meals like that.

TheTeaFairy

I often do your apple version (use soy milk instead of apple juice) but on the stove, will start a small batch in the crockpot before going to bed tonight!
I understand why you miss this type of comfort food, you stopped ALL grains, even gluten free?

Terri HarpLady

“No” to all grains for me. Initially it was just the ones with gluten, but I’ve come to find that they all make my guts hurt, some worse than others, & they tend to give me acid reflux, which was a total surprise.

I love cardamom!

CTTB!

This one is really tasty if you like Cardamom..which i do. so ha! It’s also making me really want some tasty chai now hehe. I really like the punch of this tea. there’s a sweetness here that is deliciously wonderful too. It looks like i may need to place an order with new mexico tea company sooner, rather than later since there are a few that have been passed on to me that i have enjoyed!

This tea is exactly what it’s name suggests. Cardamom and black tea. You can’t fault it for that.

I do enjoy cardamom, but I’m not sure I enjoy it this much. I am finding this tea tasty, but if I’d have to really be in the mood to want it if I had it in my cupboard.

Thanks Dexter3657. I would’ve probably never had the opportunity to try this one out if you hadn’t sent some along to me!

This one might not have been “your cup of tea”, but what you are saying about it is how I feel about NMTC in general. If they call it cardamom black, that’s what it is. I’ve ordered from them a couple of times and have been happy with the teas….

Courtney

I was actually quite impressed with this one. I didn’t know what to expect and it’s a perfectly true flavour of cardamom and black. Thanks :)

This was a super thoughtful surprise bonus Dexter3657 threw into my swap box! Awesome pick given I’ve been pleased with many of New Mexico Tea Company’s offerings and cardamom is one of my all-time favorite flavors. Thank you! You really put a lot of thought into the teas you sent me. :D

A while back I tried American Tea Room’s version and while not bad, I didn’t really find it compelling on any level (so much so that IIRC I forgot to log it here). I’m hoping that was a fluke though—I was distracted at the time by a lot of things—and plan to revisit. But anyway, I worried maybe it was a case where oddly sometimes I love flavors in general but find I hate them in combination with certain tea base types (this happens a lot with black tea for some reason). Given this opportunity to try NMTC’s I don’t think so though—I quite enjoyed this. The smell is not clobber-you-over-the-head cardamom, that unique both-cooling-and-warming quality, but there is a nice hard-to-describe generally soft aroma with a peppery bite at the tail end once it steeps. As for taste, the black tea presence is quite upfront while the cardamom gradually trails in on its coattails. This is a nice comforting cup that doesn’t demand a lot of your attention; it isn’t crazy complex, quite straightforwardly “black tea + cardamom and that’s it” but thanks to cardamom being nuanced itself it isn’t disappointingly one-note. The cooling quality comes in especially toward the end of the sip, with spiciness preceding it right in the middle. This is a good choice to close out a long dreary day. The more I drink it, the more I appreciate that the black tea flavor doesn’t get lost. I’m so glad I’ve had the chance to try it finally!

Glad you liked it. Sometimes if I want a little more kick, I just break open a pod or two, adds a little more punch. But I also like it soft and soothing sometimes too.

ifjuly

That is a good idea! And soft and soothing is the best way to put it.

TeaBrat

sounds nice, I love cardamom and wasn’t that impressed with the ATR version either.

I have been wanting to try this tea for quite awhile. Cardamon is my favorite of the “chai” spices in tea. The thought of having JUST cardamon in a black tea sounded devine to me. Thanks to the very generous, and special nextdoor – who sent me a gift order from NMTC – I finally got to try it.
This was everything I was hoping it would be. The cardamon is warm and inviting without being over powering. There is no doubt that this is CARDAMON but it’s not offensive in your face. It blends really nice against the black base. This could have a permanent place in my cupboard.
Thank you so much nxtdoor, it’s awesome!!!!

Lala

When I first read this I thought it said that black tea was your favorite chai spice. He he

Backlog:

This is a really delightful tea. Deliciously fragrant, and so warm and comforting to sip. The black tea is the strongest flavor and it is rich, flavorful, slightly earthy and has a hint of malty flavor. The cardamom is sweet and warm and reminds me of candied citrus. Sipdown! Not that I’m counting them or anything, my cupboard is nothing like most of yours’ , but I try to keep the ziploc baggies to a minimum. I gifted a little of this to my dear friend dexter3657 and some of it found its way back to me for a try. Thank you, Dexter3657 .

I didn’t care much for it the first time, but I had enough left for a 10 oz cup so I took it to the cottage in case the mood struck. And that it did, what with pumpkin pie for dessert and all… I made a maple whipped cream to top the pie with and I added some to my tea to make it more enjoyable. Without it, I found it a little brisk and a little bitter when steeped with near boiling water for just over 2 minutes. I usually do most black teas 3 minutes but I was timid with this given the previous experience.

Brews a nice caramel color, you’d think it’s earl grey not cardamom black. There is definitely cardamom flavour, large pods can be found in the leaves, but as I said, I found it a little too brisk for my liking. Glad to have tried it, the name makes you want it. And it did go with the pumpkin pie.

Happy Thanksgiving, fellow Canucks!

From the Great Canadian TTB.

This one reminds me of a chai because of the cardamom. The black tea is actually quite mild. It is very smooth. There is a definite cardamom flavour, I thought it would be stronger but the cardamom pods are whole so they are not providing too much spice. I found while drinking the tea is was quite mild. But there is definitely a spice that comes out in the aftertaste. It is a sweet and spicey cardamom taste.

This smells strange when it’s brewing—like seawater, is the closest thing I can call it. Since this didn’t do so well last time I went with a lower temperature this time. I was hoping for a stronger cardamom taste but it’s more like a mineral oolong mixed with a black tea. Another one that’s not for me, it seems.

I have grown very fond of cardamom. This tea is simply black tea and cardamom but it’s wonderful. Not quite a chai but has the cardamom spiciness. It’s amazing with milk and just a little sugar.
