drank African Chai by JusTea

Ok – time to try the last of my kickstarter reward teas! I saved this for last because I’m generally not a huge chai fan, but I’m excited about the fennel and cloves in this.

And again, I’m rather surprised by this! It has a nice bold taste at the beginning, which quickly transitions into a nice sweet finish. This is amazing. I wish I had tried this sooner but I’m happy I had it now.

I’m tempted to get the $25 fundraiser reward, but now I don’t know which 2 of the three I would choose. :O Maybe I’ll wait until they get their store up and buy then. I’m happy the fund-raiser was so successful too! They made it to 88%, and are still accepting contributions.

ETA: I just read the review from Justea and they mention this is not supposed to be a traditional Indian Chai – that would explain why it tasted differently than I had expected! Also yyz compared it to molasses gingerbread which I totally get with this! :O

Goodbye Granville Island Blend!

It’s raining out here like crazy, which reminds me of living in BC, so it seemed like a good time to finish the bag off. It was ok, but I won’t miss it.

It’s strange – the first time I tasted this I got notes of peach and grape. This time? It’s very seaweedish. Strong, and roasty. Also, a little bitter. The directions said to steep it at boiling but I’ll re-steep it at a lower temperature and see if that helps.

The steeped leaves smell grap-y though. I’ll have to re-steep it, but for now I don’t think this is one I need to restock. I’ll wait until I get a better understanding/appreciation of oolongs first!

ETA: The resteep is nice and roasty and now I’m getting a little bit of grape as well. This is much nicer! I still don’t think this is my favourite of the teaviver oolongs though.

drank Mom's Apple Pie by DAVIDsTEA
1598 tasting notes

Time for another comparison! This time it’s Mom’s Apple Pie from DT, and Classic Apple Pie from DTT. One’s a black and one’s a green so there’s not a ton in common aside from the Apple Pie, but why not compare them?

They both smells fantastic. The DT blend is light and fruity with a lot of cinnamon, while the DTT smells darker and more pastry-like along with the cinnamon/apple.

The green tea makes me think of warm apples coming out of the oven, like an apple crumble, but I don’t get any pie crust in this. I’m thinking – bright green apples! Also, artificial apple flavouring? It’s a very blend though.

The black tea is (obviously) much darker and richer, and the apple cinnamon has caramelized a bit too. It doesn’t taste that great once it’s cooled so you gotta drink it quickly. Because of the black base the apple and cinnamon are muted in comparison, but still tasty.

So, overall? Both are good, for different reasons, but neither are ones I’d be inclined to restock any time soon. :P Ha. Surprising eh? I guess I’m not as much into apple, but I’d rather drink pumpkin teas!

And here’s another sipdown! That puts me at 100 tea! (And sadly, I look at my cupboard and think I need more. Maybe 10 different samples from DAVIDsTEA? /o\)

Anyway, this was from one of the oolong samplers from Teavivre that I’m happy I picked up, although I’m worried I’ll get all these oolongs mixed up. I think the Taiwan Dong Ding is my favourite so far.

And this one? It’s described as a beginner oolong – I’m comforted. It’s mostly floral, and a little creamy, and I think it reminds me of the monkey-picked oolongs? Hmmm. I think there’s a jasmine aftertaste to it as well.

Does anyone know which of teavivre’s oolongs are roastier than the others? I think I like roasty more than floral with oolongs. Thanks!

I like roasty oolongs too. Wuyi oolongs are starting to become my favorite. I have tried teavivres big red robe and it is definitely roasty and delicious.

TeaLady441

Thanks! I think I liked the big red robe, but I didn’t rate it yet.

Also, I just realized Teavivre’s website lets you search oolongs by roastiness so I can look that way – Iron Goddess, Monkey Picked, Big Red Robe and Guang Dong Phoenix Dan are the moderately/heavily roasted ones!

Yes, it sounds like you need more tea. :D

100 is not enough choice for me. I like 150-200 :)

TeaLady441

Haha. Well once I sipdown some of my higher quantity teas, AND get a job, I plan to stock up on a bunch of smaller quantities.

TeaVivre

It seems you love stronger taste of Oolong teas, you also can give Moderately Roasted a try, i think you will like it.

drank Fu Man Chu by SerendipiTea

I’ve been putting this cup off for months now – it was one I received in the Amoda tasting box! I guess the description just never appealed to me.

And, I guess I wasn’t missing too much. It’s an interesting tea, but not one that I’ll miss. It’s about 80% jasmine oolong (with an emphasis on jasmine) while the earthy puerh notes linger on in the background. It makes me think of two siblings clamoring for attention, while one jumps up front with arms outstretched so the smaller one can’t get by.

Yep. That’s this tea.
