250 Tasting Notes
Ever since that first taste of Santa’s Secret on Remembrance Day I have been craving it like madness! This tea will have to tide me over since it’s snowing out, and i mean really snowing. I was going to go downtown to the DAVIDsTEA to pick up some of the seasonal teas, but alas, it was not to be. Carting around a 10-month-old is tough enough, but with the addition of 5cm of freshly fallen snow it was not happening. So, I drink this tea and attempt to trick myself into thinking that it’s Santa’s Secret… just… with the addition of chocolate. BUT it’s not happening and the chocolate just isn’t jiving with me today.
One day my tea will come… one daaaaaaay my tea will come!
P.s. This is tasting a little better as it cools off, but still not the tea that I need!
Preparation
Can’t remember if I have reviewed this yet… oh well, I will now!
I bought 50g of this via the website in an order earlier this fall, then proceeded to forget about it in my excitement to try the fall collection. It waited, patiently, for me to give it my attention… and today I finally brewed up a cup and focused on the flavour. But I gotta say, I was disappointed! With all the hype this tea gets, I thought I would have fallen in love immediately.
Not to be swayed I brewed this again, but this time I made it following last years December DAVIDsTEA newsletter recipe for spiced butter—cream together 1/2 cup butter, 2 cups brown sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp grated nutmeg, and a pinch each of ground cloves and salt, then store in the fridge to use ANYTIME—and made it like a latte.
Now. There. Is. No. Turning. back. I’m addicted. I can’t stand this tea straight-up, but with the addition of milk & spiced butter it’s a whole other tea…
Preparation
Oh man, it’s a love-hate relationship when your nice healthy tea becomes just as decadent as any dessert! That sounds amazing!
Totally! I mean, how healthy IS that butter—not at all—but it tastes so epically good! Plus, moderation is key… right? Right?
You definitely can, I think it just brings out more of the “butteriness” in the tea… or it does for me, anyways.
What an odd looking tea! Like coffee grounds or something, I wonder how they get it that way?
Again, another $1 straight tea… I’m trying to get in as many as I can before the deal is over in a few days! I can’t really say anything that hasn’t been said before about this tea: it definitely calls for milk and sugar or honey, don’t steep too long or it gets a bit “strong” in flavour, I think it could make a lovely chai (if mixed with the right spices), and it is another tea that is much better than David’s Orange Pekoe. Satisfying and rich.
Preparation
“Hey little girl, do you want to know a see-ca-ret? Cuz I know one, and it is sooooo good to hear it…”
I was wearing a poppy today, so I got a free tea and I chose this over Mulberry Magic since I haven’t tried this yet. Reminds me a lot of Read My Lips, but with a much smoother mintiness and no chocolate. More akin to candy canes and peppermint, for sure!
What a lovely little rooibos!
I am not a big rooibos fan, which is ironic since my husband’s family is from South Africa and they are SUPER picky about their rooibos tea and how altered it is. Me, not at all like that, in fact I can rarely drink rooibos straight! I always need some additive or flavouring to make it a little less… rooibos-y. Anyways, this tea is a perfect example of the beauty of flavoured rooibos; it’s both spicy and creamy, with the caramel-y sweetness of the rooibos tempered by the other flavours.
I drank this once straight, once with a splash of milk, and the latest time I brewed it on the stove like an Indian chai. While it tastes alright straight or with just a splash of milk, it truly shines when made in the traditional chai style! It was robust, but smooth and it blended seamlessly with milk and a touch of brown sugar. The coconut really brings out a rich creaminess when blended with milk. If you have the chance, try the stove-top method. You’ll thank me later…
Preparation
I love rooibos chai, almost better than black tea chai… must be the fact that I can drink it at all hours of the day and not have to worry about being up all night.
Another $1 Straight tea, on the recommendation of the sales girl…
First steep: I think I left the bag in a touch too long because as lovely as this is there’s a bitterness that lingers on my tongue. Oops.
Second steep: Much improved from the first steep: earthy, smooth, slightly floral, and very much a “Darjeeling”. There’s just something about that flavour that one can’t quite describe.
Third steep: Not as flavourful as the first or second, but still steepable!
I was just going to say that it was really snowing here too… until I remembered we’re in the same place x_x
We were just out by the super walmart and had to take cover in there until the storm “blew over” which just means, got a tiny bit not worse. haha! Hang in there – you’ll get the tea you need soon! :D
Oh, Regina weather… how I loathe thee.
no doubt about it. I think we’re moving to Halifax in the spring for many reasons, but probably #1 is the weather haha!
My sister lives in Hali and LOVES it!
Awsesome! I hear nothing but good things about it! Thank you :)
