Dammann Frères Advent Calendar 2022 – Day 6

Ooh, one of the new teas I’ve been wanting to try! :D

It’s really good. I will say, it doesn’t reallllly remind me of pancakes? It’s more toasty than that, almost like a genmaicha or something. It does have some lovely buttery notes to it, and the banana comes in mostly at the end of the sip for me. It is a tad candylike, but it’s not full-on Runts banana. More like a creamy pudding banana, the kind from a box. There’s also some caramel going on, or maybe that’s the maple. I’m surprised I’m not getting a more definite maple note, as I remember some of their other teas being super spot-on for real maple syrup.

Oh, I see this has buckwheat flavoring, which explains the toasty notes! It’s scrumptious but reminds me more of a banana-caramel genmaicha on a black base than it does of pancakes. Either way it’s yummy though, and going on the to-buy list! :)

Also, I find it nice that Dammann seems to be embracing more modern flavors in their new teas lately, despite being a very traditional company. I hope they keep making fun new blends like this and Lassi Mango!

Flavors: Banana, Butter, Candy, Caramel, Caramelized Sugar, Grain, Roasted, Smooth, Sweet, Toasted, Toasted Rice

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 3 min, 0 sec 8 OZ / 236 ML

I’ve also noticed DF getting a lot more adventurous/modern with their flavours and ingredients. As a legacy brand, I can’t help but wonder if it’s an attempt to reach a younger customer base more open to deviating from the “traditional” mono flavoured black blends they built the brand on. Whatever the case, I dig it!

That could definitely be the reason, either way I’m happy about it ha ha. I guess I’m the target audience! :P

I got their advent maybe 10 years ago now and wasn’t impressed. Their flavors were so light and the teas so boring that I wrote off the company and haven’t had them since. May have to reconsider that stance if they are doing banana teas now!

Hi, I’m Cameron!

I’m a 30-something software engineer currently living in Austin, Texas with my husband and our two pugs, Gobo and Ume. I tend to cycle between my different hobbies, and they include piano, knitting, video games, board games, miniature painting, planners, bento, Korean skincare, and – of course – TEA! But really, what I’m best at is “collecting” hobby-related things… ;)

~ 2024 SIPDOWN CHALLENGE! ~
- November sipdowns: 13
- Total 2024 sipdowns: 156

I prefer my tea lukewarm or at room temperature and without milk or sugar. I steep Western style, and fluctuate between using big mugs or small teapots depending on the season.

I am always up for a swap! Just let me know if you’d like to try something in my cupboard.

Tea Preferences:
I enjoy both flavored and unflavored teas in many forms. These days, I drink mostly flavored teas, and I tend to gravitate most toward black, green, oolong, and herbal varieties. I do have a special fondness for straight Japanese green teas, however.

I do not sweeten my teas, and pre-sweetened teas are usually too sweet for me. I also do not enjoy stevia.

I tend to reach for fruitier flavors rather than desserty ones these days, but I do have favorites from both categories. Willing to try anything once! There are a few ingredients/flavors that aren’t generally my jam, such as coconut, rose, lavender, and chocolate flavoring. But I also have teas that I love with some of those things, too! :)

Favorite Companies:
3 Leaf
Bird & Blend
Dammann Frères
Harney & Sons
Kyoto Obubu Tea Farms
Lupicia
Old Barrel Tea Co
Simpson & Vail
Taiwan Tea Crafts
TeaVivre

Tea Rating Scale:
90-100: Outstanding! Permanent cupboard resident
80-89: Great – a possible staple
70-79: Good, but I wouldn’t buy it
60-69: It’s decent
50-59: Meh… I may or may not have finished the cup
40-49: Ick. Couldn’t finish it.
00-39: Repulsive, I spat it out

I will sometimes refrain from rating a tea if I feel I’m too biased due to my personal dislikes, or if I suspect the sample has been compromised by age or scent contamination.
