From Tealux

Amazingly fragrant and rich, white pu- erh is made from only the most tender buds from the uppermost part of the tea plant, and produces a delicately flavored light and fruity taste that is truly a delight to the senses.

Tackled a few new teas, and a few old teas tonight. Not that I brewed much up. I’ve been having a horrible time with oversleeping lately, and so I didn’t let myself indulge in too much tea.

Anyhow, this is nice. I used ~2 tsp of leaf, and ended up with a fairly light-coloured brew, that tastes reminiscent of “standard” pu’erhs, but is much lighter and sweeter, and smooth-tasting. This one’s not quite as smooth as the Silver Buds Yabao (not that I’m really comparing them, though they are actually kind of similar). Honestly, when I picked this up, I was looking for a tea to replaced Verdant’s Aged Yunnan Silver Needle (or… whatever it was called). I think this is a fairly close approximation to that, therefore I am satisfied. Hopefully I can remember to bring some of this along for my mom. I’m not entirely sure if she would like it or not, but it would probably interest her!

ETA: Third infusion, flavour is waning (or I’ve had too many flavoured teas). Either way, putting this aside to take to my mom in April!

3g per cup for this one is more like a tbsp. It’s such a fluffy tea!

Kittenna

LOL I meant to put a number in there! 2 tsp is what I used, and I was quite happy with the flavour. I might try weighing out 3g next time though, since that’s what I saw you had used :)

OMGsrsly

Haha! 2 tsp is closer.

My mom didn’t like it, but she is so extremely picky. I don’t remember what she said about the smell, but she refused to taste it!

Kittenna

Awww! My mom will try pretty much anything. And she likes pu’erh (actually, the only tea she really doesn’t like is black tea, but she will still taste it if I want her to). I just want to expand her tea-drinking selection!

OMGsrsly

Lucky! I did a tea tasting for my mom for Christmas, and bought her the tea (singular!) she liked best. She ended up liking one I didn’t like, and said all the other black teas were “too earthy”. IDK.

Quick! Someone other than me compare this with Bai hao Yin Zhen from DAVIDs Tea. I would swear up and down that they are the same tea except Bai hao is supposedly white. Maybe they are marketing is as white thinking it works better than saying it’s pu’erh? The teas look the same in dry form and they taste the same once brewed. Even the steeping instructions are the same. Bonus for me is that DAVIDs is $29 for 100 grams when not on sale and the Tealux works out to be $25.00 for the same quantity.

I am serious, you guys. Dexter3657 , I know you have both. Pleeeease have the Bai Hao tonight and let me know? Whoever else has both of them and can compare, please tell me I’m not crazy!

Also, I think now is a good time to maybe address the pu’erh issue. I maintained I do not like it. Maybe I need to clarify by saying I am trying to get an appreciation for the shou kind. The cup I have right now is awesome! But again, I don’t feel like I’m drinking pu’erh.

Many many thanks to Dexter3657 who sent me some pu’erh samples so I can figure out once and for all if it’s for me or not. Dex, you’re a gem.

Dexter

I told you it was mild….
Ok Ok, I’m at work, I don’t have my whole stash here. Will try the Bai hao tonight. I drank this the other night before I sent it to you. I like the Silver Tips Mandala cake I have better – it’s more “pu’erh” than this is – but this has some pu’erh characteristics…

Dexter

Tealux also has 20% off sales pretty regularly…

scribbles

I have this one. I also found it tasted more like a white tea than a pu’erh.

Sil

isn’t this just white puerh? aka puerh made from white tea..hence it should taste more like a white? (i am not overly knowledge about such things…but that’s how they play out in my head)

OMGsrsly

I found this one thicker, but I don’t have any left to compare. It’s on my ‘to buy’ list!

Dexter

White Silver Tips Pu’erh leaves are larger and there are more buds. The Bai Hao leaves are darker and furrier. The silver tips steeps to a slightly darker color.
Silver Tips is light and fragrant but does have some earthy pu’erh on the top of the mouth and the back of the nose – this comes out more as it cools.
The Bai Hao this is similar but not the same – it’s grassier, and more astringent – there are more floral notes to it. All this is really subtle – it’s not in your face grassy but that’s what I’m getting.
I think these are similar but not the same – they should be similar – as Sil suggested this is a white tea pu’erh – I’m definitely some of the “dirty, earthy” notes of pu’erh.
Dunno – just my thoughts – but then I’m not getting any “peaches and cream corn” from the Bai, so what do I know?

ashmanra

I had a white puerh called Moonlight White but when I looked it up to learn more one review said it was a white, sold as a puerh, processed as an oolong but never listed as one! And said it could be classified either way as white or puerh. I liked it but it was $81 a cake at the place I tried it and it is far cheaper online.

I hate it when life gets in the way of tea drinking, and I have a lot to catch up on…my own tea purchases, as well as from some amazing swaps.

While this tea is called a pu’erh, it is more reminiscent of a white tea. The taste reminds me of White Peony. I don’t mind. I like white, and go to it when I don’t want heavy or strong flavour.

On opening the bag, the dry scent is fresh. Brewed, the taste is light, fresh and slightly grassy. Not bad, but since there are so many other tea’s to try, I wouldn’t find this one a mandatory staple.

JustJames

i agree with your assessment of this one and will add that it’s the kindof tea i’d go to when i’m feeling off and don’t want something robust. i do miss the normal nuttiness of puerh, though.

scribbles

I agree, it doesn’t have that earthy, nuttiness normally associated with pu’erhs.

Dexter

Hmmmmm interesting, this is on my Tealux wish list. I’ve had another tea that was what I thought of as a white pu’erh, but it had some of the pu’erh earthiness to it – subtle but it was there. I thought this would be similar.

JustJames

i’ll share some with you, if you like Dexter3659.

Dexter

Thanks James, really appreciate it but I’m going to place a Tealux order soon (this weekend – take advantage of the sale?) and I’ll just get a sample size of it. Love that Tealux has several different size options. Thanks anyway!!
I’m in the process of restocking my cupboard, wouldn’t be much fun choosing something to swap for right now, hit me up again sometime when I have lots of options for you. :))

scribbles

Saw the sale…debating…I know I shouldn’t…

Dexter

OH I KNOW I SHOULDN’T!!!! I have SIX packages in the mail heading my way (swaps and orders) – have been out of control. Then part of me thinks, you’ve blown the budget already, what’s one more order. They also have a mug I really want….. Still thinking about it, but I know I will place an order soon.

I don’t really know what to think of it. It’s my first white tea ever! Dry, the leaves are a little squishy, and are quite large. The package says 1-2 tsp, but I just estimated as the leaves are too big to measure that way.

It smells really sweet and a little grassy. The flavour is super delicate. I have a feeling I didn’t use enough leaves as I can’t really spoon it out, but then how many grams would I use for a cup?

I do like it as it’s another tea I will drink without any additives (perfect for work!), but would I buy more? I’m not sure. I’ll have to drink more of this (really huge) sample and make some more notes.

TEALYRA

you should use about 3g per cup of 8oz

OMGsrsly

Thanks! Just weighed it out, and it looks to be what I had estimated. Now, to drink tea.

Kittenna

Just a note – I imagine that you figured it out already, but although this is a white tea, it’s also a pu’erh! So probably doesn’t quite taste like a classic, regular white tea (although tbh, I’ve only had about 1 straight white tea in my life, though I should hopefully be fixing that soon!) Anyways, just noting this :D

OMGsrsly

I actually like this one way better than the white teas I’ve tried. Granted, all the white teas I’ve had have been flavoured, but still. This one was so good. I’ve had it a couple times since (without logging) and yum. Delicate, delicious tea.

Kittenna

I think this one is more strongly flavoured than most whites, which is nice. I also like the flavour of this one better than the one straight white tea I have had (Bai Mu Dan). I know I like Silver Needles and such, but haven’t ever had them straight, just in blends (like Butiki’s), where you can actually taste the tea.

OMGsrsly

Most of the flavored teas I’ve had have been bai mu dan, which I did not care for. I’ll have to check out Butiki’s white blends! I’m planning a birthday-money-order from them.

Kittenna

Yeah, bai mu dan tends to have a plasticky taste to me. Or I’ve often had low-quality versions. You should love Butiki’s teas!

OMGsrsly

I’m so excited I’m going to hit that $75 shipping minimum in about 5 minutes!

Kittenna

Ahahaha. It’s not difficult! I think my first Butiki order (BEFORE a free shipping threshold), cost about that much… plus shipping. Yum.

I drank this earlier so I’m going purely on memory here.

Anyway, I’m confused by this. Is it a white tea? Is it pu-erh? How do you draw the line? It was tasty but it remined me of Bai Mu Dan, and even looks like it. So, I’ll assume that it doesn’t have the ‘magical’ pu-erh properties (weight loss, digestive help etc). Tasty though!

Kittenna

I would also like the answer to this question. I certainly agree that it tastes rather like a white tea as opposed to pu’erh.

Sipdown…had this tonight, and um, I’m not really in love with it. There is nothing really wrong with it, but it just doesn’t wow me. It is kind of a deeper tasting white, but mild at the same time. There is a sort of citrus dryness, I think with this. I would have to say that as far as pu ergs go, I prefer sheng pu erh over this, though I like black best.

I think this came via OMGsrsly with my mega birthday samples swap last summer.

I was drinking this at work today. It’s light and fragrant but does have some earthy pu’erh on the top of the mouth and the back of the nose – this comes out more as it cools.
This is just ok for me, I like pu’erh to be big and bold – this is too mild.
Any white tea fans that are interested in pu’erh should give this a try – it would be a good stepping stone.
