It smells like cake or chocolate. Well, maybe a little like chocolate cake. The flavour is more chocolate (and berries) than red velvet.

Red velvet is essentially a chocolate cake, so that’s not surprising! Though it’s supposed to have buttermilk, I’ve never found a red velvet tea that captured that aspect.

I want to try DT’s Red Velvet.

Lariel of Lórien

It’s better than some of chocolate rooibos blends I’ve tried.

Both the loose “leaf” and the liquor have a scent that’s mostly rooibos with a hint of some kind of generic sweetness. The taste is a bit more interesting; I’m not sure I’d call it similar to red velvet cake, but it’s definitely cake-y and I can taste the hint of cacao and raspberry, and there’s a nice even balance between the base and the flavoring. I’m not in love with it, but it’s the best dessert rooibos I’ve tried (although to be frank, I don’t think rooibos and sweet tastes are really made for each other).

Sipdown!

We have had big pots of this in the evening with snacks. It is one of the few red rooibos teas I like. I haven’t had red velvet cake in many years – decades, even. I don’t really remember what it tasted like so I don’t know how authentic this is. Definitely dessert-like and would be even more so with milk and sugar, but we like it plain.

Aside from 3 Leaf Tea’s Birthday Cake Matcha, this was the cake tea that I drank that actually felt the most appropriate for a birthday. It was rich, decadent and just chocolate-y enough without neglecting the other elements of the blend: a hint of creamy cocoa and a subtle addition of a jammy, baked raspberry note. Does it remind me of Red Velvet? Visually, yes! The tea leaf is stunning. But in terms of taste it tastes more like a chocolate cake with some fun additions than Red Velvet. Red Velvet needs cream cheese frosting – otherwise it’s just fun coloured chocolate cake…

I was reminded recently while watching an episode of the Great British Baking Show, that red velvet cake is special because it contains a bit of tang or sharpness, which is undoubtedly why it goes so well with cream cheese frosting! I hope this tea retained that quality, perhaps as part of the raspberry component?

The chocolatey raspberry flavor in this seems to come out a little more after it sits for a while. I wasn’t tasting much at first but now I’d say it’s a pretty solid like.

Additional notes: I think I’ll switch my opinion to say that yes I would recommend this tea. When you add milk, sugar, and vanilla, it actually tastes like quite a nice dessert tea. It is a bit cakey and chocolatey. And you can rebrew the leaves for a second tasty cup. I’ve tried this a few times, and I like it a bit more each time. Plain, still nah, but with the right additions, this is nice.

Oh rooibos, you ruin damn near everything for me. All I get is that woodsy rooibos flavor. I can tell that there are supposed to be other flavors, but the rooibos drowns them out. They never had a chance.

Additional notes: My sample from Ost that is at LEAST five years old (when I wrote the note) is aging AMAZINGLY. Wow, it still tastes fresh. And if I use more than one teaspoon much more chocolate and raspberry peaks through. The coconut isn’t in the flavor but it also isn’t rancid yet… I’d call that a plus. >FIVE YEARS. A S&V essential for me. Raising the rating from 88.

Don’t you just love when those old teas are still good? Or maybe it’s more just a sense of relief…

It’s both love AND relief. haha :D

Wow was this ever sweet! no sugar added or anything. I don’t mind, it was a nice dessert treat. Maybe next time I’ll try it with milk and see how that goes.
I think it actually did taste like red velvet, but I was in a rush so will try a longer steep next time. Gotta hold off on the rating for now!
