Hm. This smells (and tastes) a lot like a few of DAVIDs teas – many of the cake ones come to mind. Maple-flavored pancake syrup, yet again. And that’s cool and everything, I just wanted something different tonight. Plus, getting something from Della Terra is quite a bit more challenging for me than walking down the street to DAVIDs, and so…

Dry and steeped, this smells like spice cake. My first few gulps (because it is good), are creamy, a touch oily, and cake tasting, however there is zero cake feel or breadiness. As I continue sipping, a fruity note appears a few seconds after I sip. Pineapple is a bit of a stretch. Maybe candied pineapple, which shouldn’t surprise me considering the huge chunks of it in this blend.

I like it, I just wanted it to stand out from the crowd, instead of tasting like pretty much all of the spiced cake teas I’ve tried in the past few weeks.

EDIT: Truvia brought out the pineapple and cakiness more.

That is kind of disappointing. People seem to be such fans of this one that, in my mind, it has been built up to be one of the ultimate cake teas. I have been waiting for Black Friday to place a Della Terra order and this was on the top of my list. Perhaps I should rethink that and only get a sample.

MissB

I’ve got enough left for another cup or two and had already put it in the swap box – because I knew someone would want to try it as well who has a hard time getting their hands on it. I can send it along to you if you’d like to try it out.

This is a sample surprise kindly sent by Nicole, thank you very much for this one too.
The dry leaves are full of pineapple chunks and smells like caramelized fruits.
After steeping it smells really like a fresh home made cake coming out of the oven ! incredible – and it tastes absolutely like a caramelized fruit cake.
The pineapple is not very perceptible as caramel, cake and vanilla flavours but I can taste it very very very far behind.

The flavours are so strong you keep the taste a long time after drinking !

A very well done dessert tea.

Thanks to Emilie for sharing this!

Not super wild about the dry smell. Very strong and somewhat unnaturally caramel.

OMG… this is amazing. Still smells super strongly of caramelized brown sugar. I don’t taste pineapple very much, but wow, does this ever taste like cake. This is the only dessert tea I’ve had that tastes so much like a dessert that I could have it and fool myself into thinking I am having a real dessert. I would definitely order some of this.

Now I need to make pineapple upside down cake…

Tea #14 Great Canadian Traveling Tea Box

I really wanted to try this tea based on Steepster reputation.
I don’t get it. This is just sweet vanilla black tea. I got no pineapple at all. Without pineapple it can’t be pineapple upside down cake.
Really disappointed. :((

Fjellrev

I agree that it severely lacks pineapple. Like David’s Red Velvet Cake, but a fraction better.

ifjuly

I remember liking it but yeah, noting that the name has zero to do with what it tastes like, ha.

JustJames

i had to dump about 4 tbsp of brown sugar to get it…. but then i felt like i had to shave my tongue ;-P

Sil

I like this one, but not because it’s “pineapple” i just like the cakiness of it.

ifjuly

yeah, exactly

Dexter

But….. but….. I don’t care if it tastes cakey. I want pineapple, and caramelized sugar.

ifjuly

dunno how you feel about green teas but if you want pineapple flavor i recommend den’s tea pineapple sencha. it even has the juicy, tingly mouthfeel of real pineapple, yum.

ifjuly

that’s uncooked pineapple flavor though, granted.

Finally, a tea I can drink! My tea experiences just haven’t been too peachy today.

I’m definitely getting a cake flavour from this. Very sweet, although I wouldn’t call it an experience much akin to biting into one. The pineapple is there, but I’m getting very little of the cherry. The aftertaste is slightly astringent and tart – seems like the fruit takes more of a back seat to the cake flavour.

This reminds me of Davids Coffee Cake a great deal – just not as heavy on the sweetness. Not bad.

Looks like a few of us made the same comparison with those two teas! Glad you found a good cup!

Yvonne

Lol, it does! Thanks :)

Plunkybug

I like this one too, and it is similar to DT Coffee Cake, yes, but so much better. Not as artificial.

Well hmmm. I was so looking forward to cakiness, and pineapple! But… all I get is maple syrup?! delicious, (overly) sweet, syrupy goodness. Ok so it is yummy. I will give it that. I’m just disappointed because it isn’t what I expected. Especially since I’ve tried this before, and ya know what… I swear, it is a different tea blend. Harupmph

Veronica

I’ve been wondering if the blend has changed, too. The bag I have now taste very different from the bag I bought last summer.

tigress_al

I got cherry from this and like you, no pineapple

Plunkybug

I get sweet cherry, and a juicy mouthfeel from the pineapple. not cake though.

Indigobloom

Veronica, good to know I’m not the only one who feels this way!
Heather and Tigress, I’ll have to pay closer next time, and look for the cherry note! I had this with food so maybe that was why. Did get two good steeps though.
But if I wanted a maple tea, I would have gotten that instead! Oh well it is tasty!

I haven’t had butter in a long time, I haven’t bought it in years. But for some reason, this tea tastes like burnt butter to me. It’s not really bad, I enjoy drinking the cup, but it’s not fruity to me at all and I’m left feeling like it’s not doing for me what it seems to be doing for everyone else.

Sigh. I don’t dislike it, but there are teas I much prefer, and it may end up in my swap tin.

I’m super excited to try this tea. This is one of the ones that I was most excited about ordering from Della Terra. The dry leaves smell so much like a rich, buttery cake with just a little hint of pineapple that comes and goes. Wow, the aroma from the tea is seriously filling up my whole kitchen. It’s making me really crave some pineapple upside down cake! The aroma is a rich, butter brown sugar smell. The flavor is initially a little malty, with a buttery and cakey taste. There is a sweet pineapple finish, and the aftertaste is of heavy brown sugar and pineapple upside down cake. It honestly tastes like I just took a big bite of this cake! I love how there is a little black tea maltiness at the beginning. All of the flavors just mesh together so well, it’s hard to focus on one flavor – it’s so perfectly flavored like the actual cake. I added some milk and sweetener and it became a creamy and smooth cup. This tea completely lived up to my expectations, probably even surpassed them a little. I still have six of my new Della Terra teas to try, but this company is quickly becoming a favorite! Someone please stop me from ordering every single tea that they make!

-Dry blend has medium black tea leaves and twigs with small pieces of dried pineapple and pieces of dried cherry.
-Dry leaves smell strongly of buttery cake with a hint of pineapple. Tea liquor aroma is of rich brown sugar.
-Tea liquor is a clear medium yellow brown color.
-Malty, buttery and cakey flavor with a sweet pineapple finish. Heavy brown sugar and pineapple upside down cake aftertaste.
-Best with milk and sweetener.
-Excellent tea. Heavy and rich brown sugar flavor. Tastes exactly like pineapple upside down cake.

My love for this has dwindled. It’s still way better than the Coffee Cake and Red Velvet Cake teas from DAVIDs, but there is still an artificial eh taste to it…so I am dropping my rating on this one, though I do still like it, so it will still be high-ish, but not as high.

All I’m really tasting is the cherry artificial taste right now. I might see if that changes with a cold steep…which reminds me, I have a cold steep in the fridge steeping and it is probably ready by now.
