Coconut Oolong

The coconut in this is pretty intense, like a toasted coconut taste. But the oolong itself has a spinach-like taste that even kind of comes through as a buttery flavor at some points. I wasn’t terribly crazy about that paired with the coconut. My fiance had it iced and loved it… So I’ll have to try it iced.

I received a 25g bag of David’s coconut oolong in my Spring Collection sampler that I bought myself as a birthday gift. I opened all of the samplers to get a whiff, but this one I had to try immediately. The smell was intoxicating, with a heavy, almost floral coconut aroma, with hints of oolong right behind it. I set about brewing a heaping teaspoon of it in my new Perfect Tea mug, and brewed up the first steep.

I took a sip, and literally moaned out loud. This tea is absolutely amazing. It’s creamy, floral, even vegetal, all at once. These notes roll over the senses, first being the taste and smell of sweetened coconut, melting into creamy goodness. A pleasant floral note emerges, briefly. As the coconut washes away, the oolong comes out. All in all, this tea is incredibly well rounded, and is my new favorite. I’m not normally an oolong kind of girl, but this takes a high seat in my tea cupboard, and will absolutely be reordered when this sample is finished.

I was really happy when I saw this tea was in the Spring Collection. I’m recently a fan of oolongs (well, some), and have fallen in love with all things coconut in the last few years. This was the one I HAD to make first when I got home tonight.

The dry tea has a light coconut smell, but you definitely still smell the oolong. Brewed, it’s a fairly light coconut taste. Nothing overpowering, and very easy to drink. I accidentally over-steeped the first infusion by a few minutes, and it was still drinkable. My second infusion (when I set my timer), was great.

I may have to get a tin of this one.

Thank you BrewTEAlly Sweet for the sample. (: This one is pretty nice. It’s the first coconut-blended tea that I’ve enjoyed instead of wanting to spit out, haha. The light green, milky/buttery oolong pairs well with the mildly sweet flavor of the coconut. Neither one really overpowers the other. I’m not sure how some people are getting “oily sunscreen”; I think the addition of coconut is very smooth and natural. It doesn’t taste overwhelmingly artificial. (Even though there is artificial flavoring…what is a bummer.) Still, it tastes like the meat of a coconut, gentle and savory and slightly sweet. Nothing offensive about it at all. I’m a little tempted to add milk the next time around and see if it ups the creaminess. (:

I really like this tea and so does my mom. Now, that women is freaking picky with everything and I’m surprised she had nothing bad to say about it…she says it reminds her of the Philippines when she used to drink coconut water all the time. I find the tea very creamy and delicate, which I love. I find David’s Tea is very good at oolong blends, I haven’t been disappointed yet and I think I have about 5 of their oolongs. I will definitely be filling up a big tin of this, partially for me, but mostly for my mother because that woman only like 3 out of the 30 teas in my collection so far, ayaya.

I wonder what it would taske like with milk. Anyone tried?

Being still a fairly new tea connoisseur, I find oolongs to be very finicky. If I’m not careful with this gentle blend, it gets upset and goes bitter on me. When it’s off, it’s terrible. But when it’s good… ah, when it’s good it’s perfect. A soft tea that needs care before it blossoms. The smell is calming and the taste demands to stand alone, or you’ll lose it. Sweet coconut, warm oolong – who could ask for more?

I have seen Coconut Oolongs around at various places and I have been curious to try one, I admit I am apprehensive. Something just doesn’t seem to click in my head when it comes to mixing Oolong and Coconut, which is odd since both things are wonderful on their own. Well time to stop being a weeny and try a new tea!

Coconut Oolong by DAVIDsTEA mixes Pao Zhong Oolong, Coconut Flakes, and Coconut flavoring in this lovely looking tea. The aroma of this tea is fantastic! A wonderful mix of the buttery, nutty, coconut with the green and floral Oolong. It is very tropical and mellow, I can close my eyes and imagine myself on a tropical island sipping a wonderful Oolong out of a coconut. Note to self, I need to do that at some point.

Once brewed the aroma takes on a sweeter quality, reminding me of freshly baked coconut bread. After the initial sweetness there are notes of walnuts, orchids, and a mild vegetal finish. It very much so reminds me of a ‘sea’ themed hair spray I used when I was younger. No worries, it does not smell like a perfume, but it has that nostalgia factor for me. The liquid smells very creamy and coconutty, with a slight note of tropical flowers. I am really excited to taste this tea!

Hold on, I need a moment to process how delicious this is. That is an impressive level of yum, mixing the sweet nuttiness of the coconut with heady flavor of honeysuckles in what I consider a perfect blend. It manages to be rich and mild at the same time, a dessert tea that also feels cleansing and light. I feel a bit guilty for having apprehension and I am so glad I gave it a try. DAVIDsTEA, once again you do not disappoint.

I enjoyed every cup of this, even the ones I oversteeped! The oversteeped ones just had more of a vegetal green taste to them. The less carelessly steeped cups were creamy – I can see why some people might have said oily – and had a really delicious coconut flavor. I didn’t think it was too much coconut. Instead, it reminded me of those hot coconut custard desserts, just lighter tasting and with less sugar. I’d definitely be getting more of this if it were still in stock. Way tastier than Adagio’s Coconut Pouchong!

I picked up 20 grams of this, just because it’s oolong and because it’s coconut (and because my 4 year old daughter just LOVES coconuts!)

I drank this last week I think and wasn’t sure about it completely. So I gave this another go today while I was cooking dinner. I have this small ceramic cooking pot (holds about 6-7 oz’s comfortably) that I made into a make-shift gaiwan. I put in a heaping tsp and filled the pot with water about halfway (between 3-4 oz’s). I wanted a stronger flavour to get the best out of it.

1st steep – about 2 minutes 45 seconds. Wow. This was so good. MUCH better than the first time I had it. More coconut flavour. I think I have figured out the best way to enjoy the flavour now.

2nd steep – about 3 minutes 45 seconds – sooooo yummy! I think I like this steep the best. Creamy, coconuty flavour. Even after having drank the brew, I could taste coconuts in my mouth. Like, real coconut. As if I had just bitten and chewed on some of the flesh.

3rd steep – 4 minutes 45 seconds – just as good as the seconds steep.

4th steep – 5 minutes 45 seconds – Still a hint of the coconut there, and creamy oolong.

5th steep – 6 minutes 45 seconds. By this point, I can still taste the oolong and there is color but the coconut flavour is quite weak and I can tell that it’s becoming more watered down in flavour now.

Not going to push for a 6th steep.

But I really enjoyed that session! Very refreshing!
(4th and 5th steeps I used boiling water).
