From DAVIDsTEA

Delicate notes of warm cinnamon and not-too-sweet apples.

less oy, more joy
Let’s give a warm welcome to our very first Hanukkah blend, Latke Love! With warm spices like cinnamon and the perfect kiss of apple, we can’t wait for you to fall in love with this delicate & cozy blend. And yes, this tea is kosher!

What Makes It Great:
Inspired by latkes, a cultural staple in Jewish cuisine, this blend is our very first Hanukkah tea.
The delicate combo of warm cinnamon with sweet apple makes this blend a cozy, not-too-sweet treat.
Perfect for your Hanukkah celebrations!

Sipdown! (3 | 109)

This was a pleasant enough blend, but mostly just tasted like a mild cinnamon and apple rooibos to me? Nothing really said latke specifically, and even the apple was a bit faint. So almost more like a cinnamon sugar pastry?

Still nice and cozy for the evening, but not something I would personally reorder, as I like my cinnamon apple teas to be more apple-y.

You know, this one is quite starchy/potato-y. I also would have guessed apple? With milk and sugar, it was actually pretty enjoyable. The rooibos was a great choice, and I could picture there being applesauce on top, though I don’t prefer my latkes served like that. I really appreciate what this blend was trying to do, and I think it did a good job. It tastes best at room temperature or cold, and I find myself craving this one pretty frequently!

This is a really hard flavor to land. As far as I know, Butiki is the only other company that has ever put out a latke blend. I appreciate the effort, care, and ambition that goes into doing a blend like this. And I wanted to make sure that I gave it full consideration so I’ve had it a few times now before finally sitting down to write up a note.

No doubt, this is a delicious blend. Apple, cinnamon, nutmeg, nice woody rooibos base. Big cozy fall vibes. But it’s apple-cinnamon pancake, not apple-cinnamon potato pancake. For one mug, I went out of my way to add extra bits of potato from the blend to see if that would help. That definitely upped the potato-starchy element, but it still leaned too sweet. I even tried adding salt, which used to work to bring out the savory aspects of Butiki’s blend, but didn’t seem to do much here. This is definitely a very DavidsTea take on the concept, which is to say that it skews sweeter than I’d ideally like it to be for a latke blend. I realize that most of DavidsTea’s market probably won’t be clamoring at the doors for a tea to be more savory, though, so this is just a matter of my preference.

Finding the right balance of potato for the blend was very tricky. Especially because “right” has soooo many meanings. You’re 100% spot on though with where and why we settled on the amount we did include.

That makes a lot of sense, and thanks for validating my read :) I’m also one of those people who doesn’t put toppings on my latkes at all, so my preferences would definitely skew more savory than the average bear. It occurred to me yesterday that it might be interesting to mix this with some hojicha though, so that’s going on the to-do list!

I had a pretty surreal experience earlier this week…

So, here in Montreal there’s this INFAMOUS Jewish brunch spot called Arthur’s. They don’t take reservations, and to get in for brunch you usually have to wait in line for over an hour. Always busy. So delicious though, with the best cottage cheese pancakes and amazing latkes.

Well, a few coworkers and I went for breakfast there earlier this week specifically because they’re carrying this tea is part of their menu for the winter. It was absolutely wild going to this beloved restaurant (that I’ve been a fan of since moving to MTL) and ordering a tea off the menu that I developed and getting to just sit there and, well, drink it.

I mean, DAVIDsTEA is carried in several different cafes and we’ve had lots of different pop ups and events since I’ve started working there where I was able to got and order one of our teas. However, the teas featured are usually our best sellers. Stuff we’ve carried since before I was an employee or that was developed when I was working in stores or just a data assistant in the lab. This was different. It felt different. It was really, really cool.

Friendly reminder that I do not numerically rate DAVIDsTEA blends as I’m currently employed there and it would be an obvious conflict of interest. Any blends you see with numerical ratings were rated prior to my employment there. These reviews are a reflection of my personal thoughts and feelings regarding the teas, and not the company’s.
