Dammann Frères Advent Calendar – Day 4

This is one rich tea – full of roasted chestnut, almond, and chocolate malt goodness. It also smells like marzipan which is my kryptonite. The profile has a lot in common with my seasonal favourite from Mariage Frères: Rouge d’Automne (but this oolong would be cheaper to order, so that’s a thought…).

Steep Count: 3

Flavors: Almond, Chestnut, Chocolate, Cocoa, Malt, Marzipan, Roasted, Vanilla

blueeyedsurprise

Sounds delicious! I will have to check this one out.

gmathis

Someone shared a packet with me a long time ago, and even after years, it was still delicious. Fresh, it must be stellar.

Inkling

Ooo, this sounds amazing!

Leafhopper

Agreed, this sounds lovely! It seems like the Dammann Frères advent has some nice teas this year.

Crowkettle

Yeah, I’m a fan of this tea and the Dammann Frères advent. I find them extremely consistent despite not particularly loving their “Christmas” blends :P

Leafhopper

A lot of the French teas you’re writing about sound like things I’d enjoy. I’m also having advent FOMO from everyone’s notes! :)

Crowkettle

Even though I have advents, I feel a bit of FOMO about some of the other selections I see lol (the B&B and the green tea-centric ones. Ahhh)!

I heartily recommend the Dammann Frères ones if you’ve never tried their teas before; I’ve always found it to be a good way to sample what they carry.

The Mariage Frères one though… that company carries some amazing teas that rarely, if ever, seem to make their way into the advents. Instead, MF usually over-highlights their “In Love” or “Rainbow” teabag series. I keep going for it because flavoured oolong and floral teas still feature a lot and, once in a blue moon, a unique tea will make its way in there.

After the holiday season, I should send out samples of some of the MF teas (I can’t promise anyone will like them as much as me, but they’re usually interesting).

Cameron B.

Dammann Frères does such a nice advent! I’m always a bit sad when I don’t get it ha ha. I’ve still never tried the Mariage Frères one, every time I see someone else doing it, it seems like a weird selection of teas, like all butterfly pea flower or something. I wish they would do a more classic selection, as I would like to try some of their core teas…

Leafhopper

Crowkettle, many of the Dammann teas sound nice, and I’d actually be happy to get only a single teabag given the size of my tea museum.

I’ve wanted to try Mariage Frères for a while, but they provide absolutely no info about their shipping other than that it’s via DHL or something and the Canadian resellers have very high markups. And I agree, I’ve seen some weird teas in their advents.

Shipping to Canada is another issue. I already pay exorbitant amounts to ship my fancy unflavoured teas, and I’m not sure I could justify spending a lot on something I’m not sure I’d enjoy (and they always seem to come in 100 g packages, too!).

Maybe we could do a swap in the new year if you like unflavoured tea. I have a lot of oolong at the moment. :)

Crowkettle

Yeah, unless you or a friend can visit a physical store, or are withing their free shipping range, Mariage Frères is pretty expensive and inaccesible. I’m in Canada too, and buying their advent (plus extra teas) is such self-indulgent splurge that I can barely justify it, honestly (Christmas gift to self). Even though it’s not consistently wonderful, I do believe that the advent has helped me form a better idea of what I do like, and what to look for, in their teas though. This in turn makes me feel more comfortable taking a chance on 100g…

The more I see of the blue pea-flower oolong the more I don’t understand it as a choice. It’s mentally jarring to drink a nut, brioche, or chocolate flavoured tea that some shade of murky blue/green/grey. Luckily, the special colour disappears on the second or third steep, which is personally when I think their oolong blends tend to peak. XD

Yes, I love unflavoured tea, especially the greener spectrum! Whenever I buy oolong for myself it tends not to last long. :)

Leafhopper

Christmas gifts to yourself are sometimes the best gifts because you know what you like. :) I’ve definitely splurged on tea gifts to myself this year as well.

I didn’t realize MF had a free shipping threshold. I’m guessing it’s pretty high.

I’d be happy to message you next year if you have some French teas you’d like to trade for some greener oolongs!

This is one of those perfect fall teas. I ignore it all year only to come back to it every October as soon as the weather turns colder.

It’s very smooth and clean to me, as if Dammann had managed to bottle up the exact taste of street-roasted chestnuts —definitely not candied chestnuts. I only get the faintest hint of vanilla and the gentle nuttiness of the oolong. It’s lovely!

Sipdown! (13 | 86)

So I had to look up what “châtaigne” is. I’ve always seen chestnut as “marron”, so it’s interesting that there’s another word for it. I learned a new French word today! :)

Anyway, I quite like this one. The base is a fairly generic oxidized oolong with a nice cozy autumn leaf sort of flavor. There’s some soft woodiness there as well. It goes really well with the vanilla and nut flavors that are added. The vanilla is very light but adds a nice creaminess, and the nut does reminds me of chestnut with its rich and toasty flavor. I’m not sure whether I get chocolate, but I tend to have a hard time with that anyway.

I’ll have to consider this one for a reorder in the future… It’s so cozy and would be perfect for fall! Thanks for the share, Courtney!

I’m so glad you enjoyed this one! I’d be happy to send more because I’m not as much of a fan. :)

Well feel free to pawn some off on me the next time we swap. ;)

This is a great cold-weather tea, the nutty flavor feels so cozy and comforting. It reminds me a lot of DavidsTea’s Brazillionaire, which I love and miss to this day. So I find myself disappointed that there’s no raisin-y flavor here – it’s just nuts and toffee, which is still delicious but dammit, I want Brazillionaire again.

Courtney

Oh my gosh, didn’t even realize how close it would be to Brazillionaire!

jessiwrites

It’s super Brazillionaire-y! I might have to get some and just put raisins in, hahahaha!

Courtney

Perfect! I was thinking I need more of this one when I’m out too.

jessiwrites

I might also need to do a Harney & Sons order. I was browsing old tasting notes and TOKYO OH MY GOD.

Courtney

Hahah I know. I’ve now browsed the websites for: H&S, Lupicia, S&V, Steam Tea, Granville Island Tea, more DF, and more Bird & Blend (this is where I ordered the advent plus extra teas and they haven’t even arrived in the post yet). Someone stop me!

jessiwrites

Hahahaha, but there’s nothing else to but stay home and drink tea! Especially now that it’s getting colder and darker out there.

Courtney

So true! I mean, there’s no way I’ll order from all those companies, but it’s good to know the options. Do let me know if you’re placing any orders though and maybe I can throw things in and we can split shipping. :)

jessiwrites

Oh, definitely! I also noticed Davids has Vanilla Orchid labeled as a ‘last chance’ tea, so I might need to get some of that before it’s apparently gone for good… which would break my heart.

Courtney

Oh no! I feel like I’ve come across other vanilla-y oolongs that may be tasty. I was actually really intrigued by Bird & Blend’s Peppermint Cream (and I usually shy away from most minty teas)

jessiwrites

That peppermint cream sounds INCREDIBLE, that’s basically combining my two favorite teas, hahaha! You will have to let me know how the other teas are so I know what to order from there along with that one.

I made this cup to enjoy with an amazing carrot cake that A whipped up and decorating the Christmas tree! Now that I’ve decided it’s all hazelnuts and cocoa, I’m really enjoying it!

Edit: Making a teapot of this now to enjoy while watching The Holiday and then Four Christmases! A says it tastes exactly like roasted chestnuts (she grew up eating them every holiday season)!

D’awww that sounds like such a lovely evening!

P.S. – I love your cupboards!

Courtney

Thanks! ❤

jessiwrites

Christmas already?!? This does sound really good, and I was just thinking about what kind of tea to make once I finish my cold brew… which is less enjoyable with the blustery snow going on out there. I might prepare myself a cup of this!

Despite the desserty flavours of this blend, I decided to do a cold brew today. (2 tsp in 750 mL cold water)

Some cocoa, vanilla, very nutty (much like the dry leaf), hazelnut, toffee.

Flavors: Cocoa, Hazelnut, Nutty, Toffee

Preparation
Iced 8 min or more

This makes a surprisingly good cold brew. I wasn’t sure how the notes were going to translate this way, but you know what? I say it’s more complex this way. Cold brewing in the fridge for nearly 24 hours has allowed the chocolate and nut notes to develop more as opposed to when I prepare this hot. The aftertaste is still predominantly the roasty base but there’s more going on here. I swear I just caught a whiff of Amaretto as I was taking one of the last swigs. I’m finally getting chocolate covered nuts. I’ll definitely enjoy it this way from now on.

A delight after spending 75 minutes on the elliptical. So tired and want to go to bed but must shower. Tea gone, thirst successfully quenched.

tigress_al

75 minutes! Whoa that’s dedication!

A big thanks to Marzipan for being awesome and organizing a group buy for Dammann Freres.

I decided to drink through few of these tonight and started with the worst smelling one so they would get better :)
Not sure what the heck is going on this mix… there is really dark pieces of oolong and then green oolong in there. The battle for what this is suppose to taste like clashes against my taste buds and I have no idea what I should be tasting :(

Sipdown #17

I’m disappointed in Microsoft Office. I downloaded a trial on my new laptop and then bought a license a couple days later. Once my trial expired, it asked for the product key which then it wouldn’t accept. After an annoying conversation with a Microsoft customer service rep whose native language isn’t English, I finally got my answer. I have to remove the software from my computer (uninstall it and then reinstall it) all because it won’t accept the product key code. Are you serious? This is such a stupid solution. And of course, it took several hours to get all this sorted out and then another hour to do it. I’m so annoyed. But FINALLY it’s done and I can get back to blogging.

ON TO THE TEA!

Thanks to JustJames for this sample! The first infusion is subtle and tastes like an unflavored tea. Although it claims to be an oolong, it actually reminds me of a Darjeeling. The base doesn’t have a whole lot of flavor though. It’s rather lackluster and doesn’t strike me as particularly oolong-y. There are slight hints of woody elements and…I want to say roasted, but it’s not really a roasty-toasty kind of flavor either. I’m at a loss to describe this one.

The second infusion is no longer flavorful and seems just to be a cup of warm water and a mere whisper of what it used to be. I definitely am not getting chestnut or nut of any kind in either infusion. It has a flavor, but it’s very subtle and…I can’t describe it as delicious. It’s just…there, kind of like how nearly everything has a flavor but that doesn’t mean everything is edible.

Overall, this tea is unremarkable. It’s not something that I would probably seek out again in the future. Wow, sorry for my rather harsh criticism. I fear my bad experience with Office has tainted my view of the tea. I think I need a hug.
