drank Original Masala Chai by Chaiwala

I cold brewed this overnight and its really good. A lot of milky sweetness from the honey with great chai spices. I’m getting a lot of ginger and clove today which is playing off the honey and sweetness from the milk really nicely.

So I thought I was trying this for the first time and then I came on steepster to write my note and saw I had already rated it an 81. I found my old tasting notes and was apparently quite the fan but preferred to steep for less than the recommended 5 minutes. That’s good to know now for the rest of this sample that I believe Sil was kind enough to send. Thank you!

I wrote in my earlier notes that this was a lot of malt and chocolate with some earthiness. Today, more than all of that, I am getting leather. An earthy leather. It’s smooth and there is a touch of sweetness in the top note that is a caramel/honey type vibe. The leaf definitely smelled chocolatey as it steeped and while there is maybe a flavor akin to cacao husks (that sort of more dusty/earthy/dark flavor), there is no chocolate in taste. It’s nice but not as good as I recall. Dropping the rating slightly and will try steeping for a shorter time next time.

This is 1/4 teas I had reblended in large quantities just before AQ2T went on their indefinite hiatus. I was terrified of losing some of the blends but once I got the reblends, I have been worried of opening them and being disappointed. However, I’d been thinking about this one for a while now and decided just to open it up.

When I did it smelled almost a bit floral. Unfortunately, that seems to have translated into the flavor too. I recall this being dead on for a lemon poppyseed muffin but this cup is a bit off. Perhaps I can air out the tea or something for a little bit. Or, hopefully its just me having an off day.

My evening latte that I enjoyed while being an idiot and touching the caramel off a spatula that just came out of the burning pot. Got my finger under water but that was a brain fart if I ever had one and there will probably be a small blister. Could have been rose though and at least the latte is good.

Cold Brew Sipdown…sorta (309)

I really need to try things sooner because by the time I got around to cold brewing this, it mostly just tasted like watermelon rolled in grass. No strawberry. I swear I’ve had this before but no tasting note but I don’t think I loved this other times I had it. It went into my swap box.

The past couple of days I’ve woken up and just wanted plain teas to start my day. I’m also trying to balance between drinking my older teas down while still trying my fresher teas while still fresh. So yesterday I drank a newer plain tea which meant today I decided to gravitate towards an older one. This particular tea is from November 2017.

Despite its age, this is still nice. A buttery sort of creaminess. Sort of how whipped butter is since it’s got a butter quality that is silky but still light. And floral but not offensively so. It’s basically vanilla orchid…but without the vanilla quality tbh.

Sipdown (310)

The coconut is so strong and delicious in this one today. Honestly, I get coconut filled pineapple buns when I am at work downtown and this tea is capturing that flavor perfectly. So I guess in a way it is capturing a coconut cream puff but the coconut “cream” is not so much a custard-y type cream but rather a pureed coconut filling that is creamy and the “puff” is not choux pastry but a pineapple bun. It’s buttery and delicious and this is an excellent way to say goodbye that is really taking me back to the tasty snacks hiding in the Toronto Path.

Speaking of work, they pushed my start date back a month. That sucks but I guess that means I have a month and a half off after exams to relax and do what I want. Hopefully it doesn’t get pushed back more though since I’d like to earn some money this year plus I think endless freedom might drive me a bit nuts.

My cupboard has grown exponentially since joining this site and I have a lot to share. Feel free to snoop through my cupboard and message me if anything interests you – I am always happy to swap!

For me, flavored teas are definitely my sweet spot. I will most often reach for black teas and rooibos or honeybush blends but I do keep some flavored whites and greens around for when the mood strikes. I have a few herbals/tisanes but most of the time I find myself disappointed by them as they often smell deliciously sweet and then end up tasting tart/sour. I have a little bit of an aversion to pu’erh and oolong teas. I am also wary of florals, earl greys, and chai teas. I do not like overpowering citrus flavors nor do I usually like hibiscus, licorice or chamomile. I love dessert teas – caramel, vanilla, toffee, cookie, cream, and other sweet flavors make me smile. Fruits like strawberry, peach, mango, and pineapples will often catch my attention as well.

I have also realized that although I really enjoy adding frothed milk to some of my teas, if I do not like the tea with zero additives (just in plain water without milk or sugar), I probably won’t drink it. The one exception is flavored matchas which I will happily drink in cold milk if I do not like it mixed with hot water. My theory is if the tea can’t stand on its own then it is not for me and I will more than likely try to swap it out for something else.

Tea Ratings Guide (as of December 10, 2017)
90-100 Teas I NEED on hand at all times
80-89 Teas I want to keep around for a cup every now and then
70-79 Teas I am glad I have around and can experiment with but probably don’t need more than what’s in my cupboard
60-69 Teas I would not turn down a cup of from a friend but that would probably be enough
50-59 Teas I can see why someone would enjoy but are not for me
Under 50 Teas I really did not like and most likely got dumped
