Sipdown…

So today, my co-worker decided to grab a grapefruit from the market near our store and have it on her lunch break, and the whole store just smelled like grapefruit. Even the phone smelled like that because she probably had grapefruit peel oil on her hands or something…

So that made me think of this tea, and my Grapefruit Dragon tea from Butiki…I opted for this as I knew I’d be finishing the last of it. Hooray for the sipdown! Boo for using the last bit.

I do like this tea…part of me thinks of it as a summer tea because of the citrus in it, and the floral earl grey base…but the other part of me thinks, wow, what a great tea to have in the morning on a foul grey day in fall or winter.

So I dunno…so it might be worth having some on hand, but I think I could probably manage the same feeling with another tea that I like better.

I’m glad I took a sample of this out from Shayne’s baggie to try, and later pinched a bit more out before giving the rest to him. It certainly exceeded my expectations.

Backlog…I want to like this tea, but it’s just not right. It was a bit better as a cold steep yesterday than it is hot, but the flavours still don’t pop for me.

Backlog…didn’t really look like pearls much, and I found the flavour lacking, by comparison to other black pearl teas like Teavivre’s Fengquing Dragon Pearls. Those were rich, this was thin. Maybe it was my brew. I have more sample from Cavocorax so maybe a steeping down the road will yield a better brew.

Backlog…had this one this morning. It seemed pretty smooth and not brash or anything. I don’t recall a whole lot of the subtle nuances or anything, but I remember it being very nice and easy to drink. I’ll have to report back after I have had it again.

This one is really good.

In the words of Oliver Twist, “Please sir…I want some more”.

If you like hazelnut, do not pass go and skip this one. It is super desserty, and delicious. I can say that I honestly don’t care much about the base…it is all the hazelnut and creaminess that I care about. That said, I think the base is a wee bit finicky, but pretty good in general.

I probably underleafed this one because I shared some of this with a good friend, and there was about 2 tsps left, so it was either 2 1 tsp servings or 1 big serving, and I opted to have this one again so I went for less leaf. It is still incredibly tasty, though probably a little milder than I would like normally, so I might add the last of my caramel vanilla assam which is also a small amount left. But maybe not…we’ll see.

How is it that Stacy has such a smooth black base that doesn’t get bitter or astringent or anything? It’s so mild that the flavour blends beautifully with the tea in an amazing harmony and balance. And this isn’t mild in a bad way….sort of like the difference between real and artificial flavoring or something. I’m not sure I’m explaining that well enough.

Anyway, on the the tea…I love the chocolate chips in the mix, and it smells divine, but then I love this kind of blend…Chocolate Orange Pu Erh is a winter staple tea in my house. This one is not as strong or as bold, being a lighter base, but that doesn’t mean it is less yummy. They are both tasty in their own ways…I do love the heavier pu erh base from the DT blend in winter, because it seems heavier and heartier on a cold day, but I think this could hold up well enough too, perhaps with a little heavier hand in the leaves.

It’s going on my wishlist for sure, because it is so yummy. It’s just so smooth.

Had this one iced today. Whether here has been strange for a few days, but by the time I got home for the Gardens today, the sun had finally come out and it was warm, so I opted to try this one finally, iced. It’s a different flavour than Lime Gelato, from DAVIDs, but equally delicious tasting, and I am so glad it is a honeybush, because I can handle that way better than rooibos.

I only have a small sample of this, but I have a larger amount of the Lemon Chiffon, which smells equally tasty to this one. Interestingly, it tastes exactly how it smells, which is pretty rare these days.

I’m glad I finally tried this. Although I do prefer Swampwater over this, it is nice to know I have an alternate caffeine free blend.

Something is weird with this tea…perhaps it is the sandalwood. It is definitely tasty, for a honeybush/rooibos tea, but I think I’ll stick with Orange Blossom and Alpine Punch from Davids, or Nut n Honeybush from Della Terra.

I’m meh on this one. It smells so so good. I wish it were a bit tastier. I will try this one cold steeped next, to see it the apricot notes come out more. I wouldn’t say it is a bad tea, but a little disappointing.

Had this tea this morning. Got me going with a headache. Nice chai spices with maple overtones. It was not as good as the first time I made it, so I may have under leafed or under steeped it. It’s still a nice tea.

I generally like a lot of tea. I do find I have a preference for flavored over unflavoured, but I do love a good straight tea as well.

Likes are too hard, since there are a lot. Dislikes are easier, so here they are…

Hibiscus. Blech. I can tolerate a little, depending on the brew, like Berry Good from Davids and Ruby Pie from Butiki…but in general, it’s too tart and too strong for me.

Licorice. Anything that remotely resembles licorice is out too, so that includes fennel and anise. Yuck, yuck, yuck.

Florals. I’m cool with petals in the tea to make them look pretty (except rose), and I’m cool with teas like oolongs having a floral note, but strong florals can give me migraines. Rose and jasmine are the biggest offenders. This is one where it can vary on the blend, as I can handle Teavivre’s Peach Jasmine Dragon Pearl tea because there is very little jasmine actually detectable in it.

Rooibos is hit or miss. I can do some, but not others. I handle green better than red, and honeybush better than rooibos.

My ratings don’t have a particular scale or method, and may on occasion contradict themselves, but I’m honestly not fussed about that. Sometimes I don’t even rate at all.

Um, I have an extensive wishlist. It is both a list of things I want to get again, and things I want to try. If you are sending me something, and you want to know which is which, I’ll tell you via PM.
