Well, the cold turned COVID on me. All this time, I was hoping I was relatively immune but it finally caught me 3 years after the big debut in China. The nature of mutations. Now I’m holed up in my bedroom through at least Tuesday.

The dry cough is particularly annoying. It scratches and niggles. Linden tea wasn’t cutting it so I pulled out Mandala’s Ginseng Oolong for its licorice root during the day and now this licorice root-heavy spice blend for the evening. It helps a little. The flavor is nice. It’s sweet (almost cloying) and coating, sparkling and juicy with a good touch of warming spices and orange peel. Fished the horehound candies out from the pantry to aid with the coughing and throat soothing.

I thought the first time I tried Licorice Spice that I might finish it by the end of last winter. Well I didn’t but my propensity toward neglect came in clutch for once. Feeling grateful at the moment but also wondering how China is truly fairing after the Zero COVID policy was abandoned and how the effects will ripple through our globalized world.

Leafhopper

I hope you feel better soon! I think everyone getting COVID is pretty much inevitable now.

LuckyMe

Sorry to hear the Rona finally got you. Hope you bounce back soon. I’m still a Covid virgin but it’s only a matter of time for me too

gmathis

Take care of yourself.

Oh, derk! I am so sorry! Ashman has it right now, too, and he is also holed up until Tuesday. Drink lots of tea and stay cozy!

Maddy Barone

Oh, I am sorry you are sick. Take care of yourself. Hugs.

Get well soon!
I’ve managed to avoid Covid so far and haven’t had a serious cold/flu since college but I figure my time is probably coming with the way my brothers like to parade their sick children through my house.

Crowkettle

Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Thanks everybody. Last night was the second of two nights of sweating my soul out after breaking fever. No fever today suggests I’m through the worst of it :)

ashmanra – Hope Ashman kicks it soon!

ashmanra

Thank you, derk! I hope you are on the mend and over the worst. Rest and tea!

tea-sipper

oh no, derk! Recover quickly! I, too, am really worried about what will happen in China…

Bio

This place, like the rest of the internet, is dead and overrun with bots. Yet I persist.

Eventual tea farmer. If you are a tea grower, want to grow your own plants or are simply curious, please follow me so we can chat.

I most enjoy loose-leaf, unflavored teas and tisanes. Teabags have their place. Some of my favorite teas have a profound effect on mind and body rather than having a specific flavor profile.

Favorite teas generally come from China (all provinces), Taiwan, India (Nilgiri and Manipur). Frequently enjoyed though less sipped are teas from Georgia, Japan, and Nepal. While I’m not actively on the hunt, a goal of mine is to try tea from every country that makes it available to the North American market. This is to gain a vague understanding of how Camellia sinensis performs in different climates. I realize that borders are arbitrary and some countries are huge with many climates and tea-growing regions.

I’m convinced European countries make the best herbal teas.

Personal Rating Scale:

100-90: A tea I can lose myself into. Something about it makes me slow down and appreciate not only the tea but all of life or a moment in time. If it’s a bagged or herbal tea, it’s of standout quality in comparison to similar items.

89-80: Fits my profile well enough to buy again.

79-70: Not a preferred tea. I might buy more or try a different harvest. Would gladly have a cup if offered.

69-60: Not necessarily a bad tea but one that I won’t buy again. Would have a cup if offered.

59-1: Lacking several elements, strangely clunky, possesses off flavor/aroma/texture or something about it makes me not want to finish.

Unrated: Haven’t made up my mind or some other reason. If it’s puerh, I likely think it needs more age.
