Sipdown!! (186)

Thank you MissB for the sample of this tea. Alas, it seems to be quite finicky so while some cups are really good, others are merely okay. It was fun while it lasted but I think I will be passing along the last couple of cups to my friend to test her luck with it.

Flavors: Cinnamon

Preparation
205 °F / 96 °C 2 min, 30 sec 1 tsp 8 OZ / 236 ML
MissB

Yea, wasn’t my favorite either. Glad you have someone to try it out on next. ;)

VariaTEA

I enjoyed the cups, some more than others, but now it will be passed on for someone else to enjoy.

I probably should have read my previous tasting note about steeping this for longer or using more leaf as I used the exact same parameters this time around. I am still enjoying this though. It is predominantly apple. There is a slight hint of cinnamon but mostly it is like sipping on warm apple juice. Not bad at all. Thank you MissB for passing along the sample! Luckily HI is pretty generous (as is MissB for sending me the whole thing) with their sample size so I have a few more cups to play with.

I am always just a little disappointed when a company gives absolutely no steeping directions. I would think they would know best about how their teas should be prepared but I suppose it leaves room for everyone to play around and find their sweet spot. For me, this cup was steeped for two minutes just below boiling. I find when I steep for longer the base takes overs.

Anyways, when I opened the sample package, I got a big whiff of fresh, juicy apple. In flavor, the apple is slightly muted in comparison to the scent. It is also covered just a bit by slight cinnamon flavor. I think I will try steeping this for longer to see if that brings out the flavors a bit more. Don’t get me wrong, this cup is still good, but weaker than I would have hoped (though that is probably my error and not a reflection of the tea). Thank you MissB for the chance to try something new. I look forward to experimenting with the sample to find this tea’s sweet spot.

Hm, this sounds quite good! I’ve been craving apple lately.

VariaTEA

I’m sure you have one or two apple teas in your cupboard to satisfy that craving. They tend to show up in a lot of teas :)

Yvonne

I do, actually. :) I’ve just been drinking them a bit to excess lately, lol.

And that’s goodbye to this. (162)

It smells so amazing, like a strawberry milkshake, but the flavouring is just too weak. I steeped for 10 minutes and then added a little bit of I’ll after a few sips, but I still wanted more. Hmmm. I keep feeling like I need to fiddle with it more, but I did get a few cups of it to play with…

Boo. I’m thrilled you sent me this one though, I didn’t have the highest hopes and it turned out great for me.

VariaTEA

This smells so appealing to me but I can’t get past the cacao. One day I will have my strawberry milkshake tea!

Courtney

And by you, I meant VariaTEA hah!

VariaTEA

haha. I was confused but its okay. I am glad it worked out for you.

Courtney

Sorry VariaTEA! I think I just see this tea and associate it with you now hah.

VariaTEA

Well I am glad that you associate me with a tea you like. It would be a bit sad if you thought of me every time you saw a tea you hated.

Thanks VariaTEA for this! I forgot I had it when I implusively bought a sample of this on the weeknend. Whoops! But since it was in my spreadsheet twice this counts as a sipdown (162!) AND lets me try a tea I was curious about.

I think I should have steeped this longer – it smells amazing! Strawberry and cream and wow! Sadly, the taste is much milder than the scent suggest.

I do get some strawberry and cream. I just wish it was more. I’ll have to remember to try steeping for 7 min when I have the other sample of this!

VariaTEA

This smells like a strawberry milkshake and I think that is why I am refusing to completely get rid of it. However, I have sort of been off cacao teas that I also have not been inclined to drink it so it sort of just hangs out.

Courtney

I quite enjoyed this one! The Mint and Vanilla variations weren’t for me, but this one I enjoyed so much I ordered 50g. :)

TeaLady441

Sounds promising. I’ll definitely steep it longer next time!

Yvonne

I am so, so jealous – this tea is on my ultimate wish list!

TeaLady441

I don’t know if it’s that good!

Ha – Yvonne – I just realized that you’ve got 90+ teas in your cupboard, and most of those without tasting notes. You should work on trying all those before you worry about what else you should try. You’ll NEVER try everything.

If you always worry about ‘new’ teas, you won’t appreciate the ones you already have and will always be buying more! Just some advice because I know how crazy/overwhelming it can be when you first get on Steepster.

Yvonne

I’m getting through them, slowly but surely :) The allure of new teas is so hard to pass up!

Yvonne

I actually just took a look and you’re right – I DO have a lot to get through. Gotta get drinking I suppose! My parents already give me crap for supposedly drinking too much tea :P

TeaLady441

Haha. It adds up quickly, eh?

But when I first got into Steepster I felt I had to try ALL THE TEAS, and while that’s a common idea, it’s that’s just not sustainable.

I was always excited about the teas that were coming my way and then I sorta neglected the already premium teas I had sitting there because they didn’t sound as exciting as whatever fancy new tea had caught my eye. It was sorta silly because I was always chasing something I couldn’t have. Now I try to focus on enjoying a few staples in my cupboard, while exploring some newer teas. But I have accepted that I will never get them all. And that I don’t need to because the differences between a lot of teas are so slight that they really don’t matter.

Sacriledge maybe? :P

I get teased for drinking too much too. But at least my stash looks deceptively small. :D

Courtney

Well said Cavo. :)

Yvonne

You’re very true and thank you so much for the advice! I really appreciate it :) You’re certainly wise.

VariaTEA

Words of wisdom, Cavo!

I know I have bought a million teas and swapped for a million more and now get stressed each time I see how many different teas I have in my cupboard.

TeaLady441

VariaTEA – Totally! It’s pretty easy to go from 50, to 100 to hundreds…

I remember when I first started, after my first online order I had 24 teas and I was nearly ashamed of that! Now 150 is “normal” and I’m still above that! /0\

Starfevre

I think ALL THE TEAS is something that infects a lot of new Steepsterites. I know I was like that and look at me now with a gazillion teas. I’m not opening new ones until I drink/give away/trade all the opened ones but it is such an undertaking.

Starfevre

I signed up for ALL the tea of the month clubs and now I am paying for it.

VariaTEA

Haha. I like how we all had the same experience. I remember when I joined and saw people had cupboards with like 150 teas I was like “I wish I had that many teas” and now that I am over 200 I still wish to have a cupboard of only 150…or less.

Starfevre

I went through my teas today and I’m adding the ones that weren’t in my cupboard already. Passed 400 just now.

MissB

Yep, I’m another crazy 400 gal, and let’s just say that I’m missing out on stuff often. I’ll try to find it, knowing I have it… and it’s just hiding. I’m trying to whittle it down, however I’ve hovered around 430-ish for a while now. I’ll be thrilled with about 50-75 that I love, with the rest swaps in/out or new things to try to get around the 150 mark like many of you who have been around these parts longer.

Sil

i hit 375 and it was too much for me…so i quickly dropped back to 200. That’s about as high as i like to be, though 150 is nice since there’s breathing room there if you get a big swap or order..

This sample was given to me by the incredibly lovely Missb! Thank you so much, it really means a lot to me :)

I can honestly say I’ve never had Baileys before. I’m just not an alcohol person. I do know what Irish cream tastes like however and I do seem to be getting it slightly in this tea. Unfortunately the tea falls flat however…I’m not getting any mint at all. I’m not really getting much of anything, actually – just the faint Irish cream taste and a little bit of sweet from the Stevia I added.

Had another cup of this last night and this time, maybe because I was expecting it, the bergamot and citrus brightness was more immediately apparent. It really is a great winter treat tea. Has grown on me and I find myself wanting to make a cup more and more. It resteeps quite decently too (a nice surprise—I almost never bother to with black teas but did on a whim now that resteeping’s not hassle ‘cause the water’s always at the ready).

Another thoughtful awesomely unique pick from Dexter3657—seriously, this swap box is loaded with things that feel picked just for me in the most touching way. Thank you!

My goodness this is a complicated tea. I have a feeling I may have overleafed or oversteeped it slightly, but thankfully I don’t mind a touch of bitterness (in fact, I think I may even prefer it with this one because of how it evokes chocolate—Dexter3657 was kind enough to send enough so I can try it normally too and compare!).

I do think that accidental bitterness might be contributing to the impression of chocolate candy I’m getting, as it combines with the sugary marshmallow component. It’s creamy and sweet, makes me think of those big chocolate-covered marshmallow candies but with fancier/darker, higher cacao-content chocolate. It took me a moment to find the Earl underneath that complicated flavor, and it’s still relatively faint for me but the zestiness lends a brightness that helps even out the fluffy vanilla marshmallow sweetness. The orange comes out more as it cools too, and the combination of chocolate and vanilla and marshmallow candy combined with bright orange ultimately makes it a poster child tea of the holiday season (no wonder it was part of the 12 days of Christmas promo!). This feels like a rich, cocoa-y beverage with added orange peel to me. It’s heavy and intense. Not an everyday pick but a nicer more grown up upgrade option from hot cocoa on a snowy day, I think.

OMG I love this tea! I am glad you got to try some. It is quite tasty :)

ifjuly

it grows on me the more i drink it! i went from “whoa there is a lot going on here, and all of it loud” to “huh…i really like this!”

VariaTEA

It is definitely an interesting blend. I am glad you are liking it more and more.

MissB

I’m still trying to find out if we can order a reblend of this, perhaps in a large order. Really tasty!

VariaTEA

They made a reblend MissB. There might still be some available. If not, I bought 100 g so I can always send some your way.

Plunkybug

I’ve seen a lot of people posting about this one.

MissB

Ha! Awesome. I did email Dan asking him for a reblend, however we must be having communication issues. I’d definitely love some, however zero rush. I know how much you love this one too. :)

Sil

he did reblend.

I loved this tea. It has a very smooth vanilla flavour with an undertone of cacao. I shared this tea with two co-workers and they both loved it too.

I get what OMGsrsly was saying yesterday about this tea being thin. I don’t know if it was my steeping parameters or simply the tea but this is definitely a thin cup.

However, what I am tasting is a whole lot of lemongrass. And some fruitiness – papaya maybe? Honestly, I have no idea what I am drinking. It is not bad though. Not too sweet and no hibiscus (which is rare for a herbal). Definitely interesting. Thank you Cavocorax for sharing this with me!

OMGsrsly

So weird that I got strawberries and vanilla. So weird.

VariaTEA

Haha I have no clue what is in this. It is a mystery tea.

OMGsrsly

White flowers and lemongrass and… stuff. :D

TeaLady441

It doesn’t really scream Christmas though. Maybe it’s a tropical escape from Christmas tea.

OMGsrsly

I was looking at Tea Desire’s Christmas herbals, and they all had cinnamon. Maybe this was supposed to have a spice in it, but we’re all missing it?

VariaTEA

Haha. Oh Herbal Infusions, your sneaky hiding of ingredients has left us perplexed.

OMGsrsly

It’s interesting to try teas when you have no idea what they are, but the only reason I have this is because MissB smelled strawberries. That is not good. :/

Thank you to both MissB and Cavocorax who sent this my way. My first cup was amazingly delicious but all subsequent cups have slowly made me lose interest. I still have a fair bit more so hopefully those cups are better.

Tastewise, this is very, VERY heavy on the ginger and just a hint of apple as opposed to my first cup which was all apple with a dash of ginger to warm everything up.

I think this might be my favourite of Herbal Infusion’s holiday teas after Marshmallow Snowflake Earl Grey. Although, that isn’t saying much because aside from Snowflake, I really wasn’t all that impressed. This one is not too bad though. It is very much like a diluted apple cider. Not much ginger, but the apple flavor is nice. This won’t be a restock but I am glad I have a few more cups worth thanks to the awesome MissB and the wonderful Cavocorax. Thanks girls :)

This came to me from both MissB and Cavocorax (although this particular cup is from MissB). I was a little nervous about having so much because I am finding that often I am not a huge fan of Herbal Infusions black base but tbh, I actually really like this one. To me, it tastes like warm apple cider. In fact, the taste is spot on and the astringency is more subtle and almost adds to the flavor.

I actually smiled when drinking this cup because it reminds me of my mother who got drunk for the first time drinking hot apple ciders in Old Montreal. The thought of my tiny, drunk Mom and my very confused grandparents (no one knew the cider had alcohol) just makes me laugh. So thank you MissB (and Cavo) for sending this my way :)

Mmm… sounds tasty. And that part about your mother made me laugh because I could easily imagine my own mother in that same situation ;)

VariaTEA

Obviously I was not around at the time but from what I was told she had quite a few cups of it as well. Then part way through the meal my grandparents were like “is she drunk?!” and it was only then the waiter informed them of the alcohol in drink.

caile

That is such a funny and cute story!!

Meliboum

I agree, that’s so funny and cute ! I’m sure it made you enjoy this tea even more :)

Alright you guys. This tea is awesome, but I want to comment on Herbal Infusions in general in this note. Feel free to skip right over if this doesn’t interest you. :)

My first order with HI a few months ago went over very smoothly. I placed the order, got the email confirmation, and a day or two later, got the shipping notification. The teas arrived within an appropriate amount of time.

I ordered again in late January and after ~2 weeks I still hadn’t received a shipping confirmation nor my teas in the mail. I spoke with a couple people here who mentioned similar problems. I emailed them and was provided with an explanation and the promise the teas would be shipped out the next day. I received my teas yesterday, so they were shipped out quickly after the email. From the date of the order to receiving the teas was near to a month. I weighed out my Cacao and SCC this morning because I found it strange 50g could fit in one bag, whereas before I had received 2 bags of 25g each. When I weighed each bag I found that the tea inside was ~40g rather than 50g. I emailed HI again and they were incredibly quick replying and explained that the tea had been being weighed at their cacao supplier versus with them, and they’ve now fixed it so that they weigh it with their own scale (they provided me with the scale accuracy) and that they would ship me a couple 25g bags of Cacao this afternoon.

I have to say, the order taking an age did bother me, however it was alleviated by the explanation they provided when I emailed about it. I was also slightly irritated this morning as well when I discovered the tea weight was off. However, I have to say I’m happy with all the explanations provided in both instances, and the immediate response about the weight and offer to ship some Cacao off to me to make up for it.

Feel free to take what you want from this! Also, this tea is amazing! I have done an actual tasting note on it a short time ago, if you want to know about the tea itself.

keychange

Good for you for being so thorough. And I’m glad your experience with them was largely positive-it’s often how a company responds to a situation that will predict how you feel about them.

Sil

yay! i’m glad that things worked out :)

I think I’ll go with the thinking that my stomach was still a tad off when I tried this yesterday morning, because I just resteeped the last of my swap from VariaTEA and it doesn’t have the same fake smell to it I got yesterday. Just strawberry and cacao. Although, I may have also forgot about it steeping on the counter as I drafted a message to VariaTEA as well haha. Oversteeping cacao teas always works out well.

Preparation
Boiling 7 min, 15 sec
VariaTEA

I am kinda off the cacao tea right now but this to me smelled like a strawberry milkshake and I really like strawberry milkshakes so I just can’t let it go. I am waiting in hopes that one day I will be into the cacao tea again.

Courtney

I hope so too! I have phases of cacao for sure. But I do always come back to it. And I have so many black teas, the few herbals I enjoy, I need to keep around haha.

VariaTEA

I realized the other day that I only have about 50 decaf teas among all the other caffeinated ones. That would be a lot but unfortunately most are to be swapped because I don’t really like them. So the occasional time I do find a decaf tea I like, I tend to stock up.

Courtney

I’m the same. I’ve tried many herbals and while they’re tasty, they usually aren’t tasty enough to keep around. Or I get tired of them. But look here! This swap has introduced me to another possibility. This could be herbal #4!

Yvonne

You don’t know how long it’s been since I could have a strawberry milkshake – my eyes weep from the fond memories :(

VariaTEA

Haha yay for 4 herbals!

Sil

which are your other 3 courtney?

Courtney

Winter Blend from Tealish, Peppermint Patty from Butiki, and Original Cacao Sil :)

It’s freaking cold! And sitting in my freezing office is not exactly pleasant. Ugh. Well, at least I have this tea from MissB! Get use to seeing her name in tasting notes from me because she sent me a ton of samples.

This definitely smells nice, like an Earl Grey Cream but with an extra sweet punch from the marshmallows. I have to say, with my usual parameters I didn’t get a ton of flavor out of this. I mean, there was some light bergamot and vanilla, but I wanted more. So I threw the leaves back into my 3/4 filled cup, added the last pinch of leaf I hadn’t used before, topped it up with hot water, and steeped it for another two minutes. It sounds crazy, but it actually turned out nice! The bergamot picked up, the vanilla picked up, and the base tea has a bit more heft to it. Still, I don’t quite get marshmallow from the taste (definitely there in the scent), but I bet I would if I sweetened it (which I don’t do unless I can’t drink a tea straight).

I have a sneaking suspicion that Herbal Infusions will be like Della Terra for me. I requested a number of samples of both from MissB (and she graciously obliged me) because I always read the raves and feel like I’m missing something. I tried Della Terra a while ago and liked the teas ok but couldn’t get into them because of a boring base that had no role in the flavor of the tea (a plus for some). I wanted to try again to see if maybe I was just too harsh on them.

So far, this is a nice, drinkable cup of tea but nothing I have to order more of (I’m a little relieved, haha). Thanks MissB!

Mmmmm…anything with marshmallows sounds quite good to me!

Tabby

I need this!

Dustin

I had a difficult time with DT too. There were a couple of black teas that I enjoyed, but most I found to be dull. The three rooibos I got I liked much better! Still haven’t tried any whites or greens from them, but I’m recalling that they don’t have many blends for those.

Lynxiebrat

LOL. I have not tried many from Della Terra yet, but I don’t think that over all I really cared for most of the ones I tried.

MissB

I went overboard with DT’s sample sizes and grabbed almost everything I could. The only blacks I’ve enjoyed have been a few of the chocolate ones, while Lime and Lemon Chiffon really are very decadent and yummy. One that OMGsrsly sent me, an herbal whose name escapes me, was also delicious. As for Herbal Infusions, I’m finding them hit or miss, although I do love my Cacao and Cacao Vanilla.

I cold steeped the rest of my package of this. Thank you, MissB! I’ve actually quite enjoyed this tea!

It’s only been steeping 6 hours or so, so it’s not as strong as it will be either at midnight, or tomorrow morning. It’s a nice, delicate, fruity, sweet iced tea. No hibiscus, at least in my batch.

I’d definitely get this again, provided I knew what the ingredients were prior to purchasing. :)

(PS. It’s bronchitis. I have antibiotics, and no work till Monday. Whee.)

This is a little odd. Smells like strawberries and pineapple, tastes like vanilla-strawberry-rhubarb jam. It’s pretty thin, but I only used 2 tsp in 16 oz, so I probably underleafed it.

The flavour is nice, and if I knew the ingredients (and it was available) I’d probably buy some.

I just got some from Cavo. You make it sound super tasty :)

OMGsrsly

There is potential. Idk if it’s amazing, but there’s definitely potential!

OMGsrsly

Hmm. It does get weirdly bitter as it cools. Not a tea-bitter, more of a plant-bitter. That probably doesn’t make sense, but I think it’s the white flowers, whatever they are.

Sipdown!! (225)

The smell of the dry leaf for this reminds me a lot of Santa’s Milk and Cookies. However, steeping this one up, I think it is a tad bit better but not much. Mostly I think I am just not a huge fan of Herbal Infusions black base and in both teas that is the most prominent element. Other than that, there is maybe a touch of creaminess but not much and nothing I would really call eggnog. Oh well. Thanks for the chance to try this Cavocorax. It is always nice to be able to try a limited edition tea, even if it doesn’t turn out to be as delicious as you hoped.

Backlog: I made this in addition to resteeping the Lemon Meringue I had earlier. I got distracted cooking so I could not try it hot but as a warm tea, it is very similar to Santa’s Milk and Cookies. Actually, this was slightly less astringent than Milk & Cookies and may even have more of a cookie quality to it. No eggnog or alcohol though. Again I only drank this after dinner so my taste buds may have been off but luckily Cavocorax was generous enough to send me a very generous sample that I can have another cup in the future.

Preparation

The only ‘eggnog’ I got from it was a slight creaminess that I could taste mid-sip, but not all the time. It was better than Milk & Cookies. (Stupid Milk & Cookies – glad I didn’t accidently send you more. Maybe I finished it? LOL)

TeaLady441

And I always try to send enough for 2 heaping cups. I’d hate for you to miss a good tea because it was over/understeeped this first time.

VariaTEA

Haha I got the creaminess too. It wasn’t bad compared to the others I had. I will definitely be trying it again soon with more neutral taste buds.

Another Sipdown!

I tried this twice, and just never cared for it. The lime smelled great but didn’t carry into the flavour enough. And the base was odd – Kept getting that weird salty flavor I’ve found in a few teas now…

Fjellrev

Ugh, too bad about the base. Hope I won’t get the same flavour from it.

TeaLady441

Probably not? I think I’m the only one who gets it – caused partly by my combo of my water and steeper maybe too?

Fjellrev

I was going to say, speaking of the earlier comment about water and location, I wonder if that may be part of the problem. I’ll watch for a salty flavour when I get mine in.

Yvonne

This one sounds really interesting!

VariaTEA

This never worked for me either, Cavo. I tried the whole sample and was disappointed each time :(

TeaLady441

Hmmm. I’m happy it’s not just me because I ordered some other teas from Herbal Infusions and I don’t want them all to be the same. I wonder if they use the same base for all their black teas? It’d make it easier for me to figure out what it is about certain teas that makes it “salty” and others not. I’ll have to add notes to my tea spreadsheet and track this: FOR SCIENCE.

VariaTEA

haha FOR SCIENCE! Also, I think their base is the same for most of the ones I tried. I know I picked up on the same base flavor in Moose Tracks, Key Lime Coconut, and Santa’s Milk & Cookies. I haven’t tried many of their teas though so I might not be the expert on that topic.

Dexter

(am I the only one that doesn’t have a tea spread sheet… ? )

Sil

dexter….possibly haha

keychange

dexter, no tea spread sheet here either!

OMGsrsly

I think they use the same base for pretty much all their black teas, and sadly I don’t like the base at all.

TeaLady441

OMGsrsly – I was afraid of that, but I did like Moose Tracks, so I grabbed 50g of that and the Snowflake EG. There’s a few samplers so I’ll see how those go.

TheTeaFairy

(Haha, Dexter, I don’t have one but sounds like a great idea!)

OMGsrsly

I haven’t even tried all my samples yet. I have this one, but I’m a little scared.

TeaLady441

Yes! Spreadsheets are an excellent way to summarize all your tea thoughts, as well as notes on if you should repurchase it, how you prefer to drink it etc. I love excel bc it’s so easy to search for one specific tea out of hundreds.

Additional notes: Finishing off this sample with the last of the Herbal Infusions Earl mixed in with these leaves as well. Not quite two teaspoons but the last cups of both were kind of weak with only one teaspoon. I love the sweetness of the snowflake, but to me they don’t enough bergamot. Delicious though! I needed some Earl today.
