Add me to the list of those who don’t like coconut-flavored things, but liked this tea anyway. It’s a buttery, sweet, fresh coconut that melds with the green/oolong flavor without overpowering. I am definitely tempted to buy some of this this, though $7.25/oz is more than I’d usually pay… we’ll see.
ETA: I’m having the 4th steep of this with a bowl of popcorn, with butter and coconut oil, and that’s bringing out the green/flowery bits in the tea. Don’t let the fact that it’s flavored make you think this is a cheap base – there’s a nice pouchong under there.
I used about half of my 2.7g sample, to make 4oz; I’ve steeped twice so far with good results. ETA: After six steeps, I think this is done. Still, a really good value; that was 21oz of tea from 1.4g of tea leaves!
Preparation
I think I’ve finally figured out the steeping parameters for this tea. It is very complex and dainty…really good. It truly reminds me of Samoas, but guilt-free! Woo! This is a keeper for me. More infusions to come because I am really loving this tea.
I’m liking this more tonight. I used more leaves and brewed for a slightly longer time….I also added just a pinch of sweetener which seems to bring out the coconut a bit more while not interfering with the buttery pouchong. This is actually better as it cools slightly. I think I’m going to raise the rating a bit since I got it right this time.
Preparation
Infusion #2 was a bit more flavorful, but honestly I’m not certain that I’m using enough leaves. With the Sugar Caramel Oolong, I found that 1/2 of the normal amount of leaves was plenty, but perhaps that doesn’t hold true with this tea. There is a certain buttery aspect with a hint of something else…but the coconut is mainly in the aroma only.
Infusion #3 I added a pinch of new leaves, let the water getting slightly hotter, and of course, lengthened the steeping time. There is more of a coconut taste to the tea, however, it is still very light. This isn’t necessarily a BAD thing, though. The lightness actually marries nicely with the buttery pouchong. I’ll continue playing with this tea. I’m suspecting that the flavor will be much improved when using the normal amount of leaves.
Rating is subject to change.
My Golden Moon order FINALLY came in!!!
This tea smells like Girl Scout Samoa’s!!…well, without the chocolate. I only brewed the first infusion for 2 minutes and it is a bit weak but there is a buttery/coconut presence. I’m hoping that the flavor becomes slightly stronger in the coming infusions. I’m withholding rating for now…so, stay tuned!
It’s actually decent. I like the fact that I can taste the pu erh under all the spice. The pu erh is woody and fits good with the cinnamon and cardamom. It’s very smooth and the flavors aren’t YELLING. I appreciate that.
Loose tea smells nice. Very teaish :) And rumish.
Nice dark brownish color and a still very black teaish smell. Bit of rum and gentle vanilla too.
Tastes very ummm plain black plus some scents to it. Isn’t very full and smooth. Wouldn’t say bad. It’s really drinkable if you want a non sweet dark tea. But it has no wow effect. Nothing really special about it. Kinda like buying plain black/indian teabag tea in the grocery shop.
I’ll rate it just as average…
Preparation
I’m pretty happy with this blend, actually (although it may have been a bad idea to drink hot tea in this hot weather- sweat). It’s definitely a mint-black primarily, and I do think I drowned out the green tea with my 4 minute steep time. The vanilla is there and lends the tea a creaminess that I am enjoying. MmmmMmmm…darn you and your delicious expensive blends, Golden Moon. I wish you had a student discount ;)
Preparation
Another GM sampler~ I’m not really that familiar with pouchong, but I’ve been saving trying this tea for a while. The tea from the sampler smelled overwhelmingly of coconut. Coconut and I have a love hate relationship. Mainly hate, rarely love. Now it is sitting next to me and i can smell more of the pouchong flavor as well.
First sip, nice. not really tasting much of a coconut flavor actually though. The coconut flavor might be there a tiny bit, and i’m getting some sweet undertones from the pouchong but the flavor is mainly focused on the pouchong. This is especially surprising considering how potent the leaves were before brewing. There is a sort of buttery/milky aftertaste which i’m assuming is from the coconut.
Preparation
This tea confuses me. As I waited for it to steep, I stuck my nose in the leaves [again] to inhale the wonderfully vanilla scent. It’s subtle, but it’s there. And I will pick up on any hint of vanilla, anywhere. It’s a pretty awesome flavor.
First couple sips I deemed it “tasty.” The vanilla is still a bit subtle, but it’s enough to drown out any of the black tea aftertaste I’m bound to experience. Even the black tea itself isn’t so bad. [Side note: as I’m sitting here with my cup by the keyboard, the vanilla scent still infuses the air. Better than any scented candle, that’s for sure.]
Despite all that, once it cooled down from burn-your-tongue temperature, it was… all right. I don’t hate it, but I’m not standing in line to buy more. But I’ll probably make it again at some point for scent alone.
Preparation
Golden Moon makes gooooood tea, and this is no exception. I love this as a dessert tea, as it’s deliciously sweet, but subtle too. The ‘sugar caramel’ doesn’t overpower the oolong at all. Actually, I’d describe the sugary taste as coming in as an aftertaste and the lovely green-oolong as dominant. My husband thought this tasted like ‘a cup of cotton candy’, but he doesn’t realize how much simpler this blend is than most of the flavored teas I drink…. or does he? Anyway, this was just a sample, but I think I’ll have to get some more of this one.
Preparation
The description here seems quite accurate to me: green and floral. Also a little buttery, at least in the aroma. The color is a very pale green, almost like a white tea. This reminds me of Samovar’s Four Seasons, but maybe just because that’s the most recent green oolong I’ve had; this is lighter in flavor, and sweeter. It doesn’t quite have the rich buttery mouthfeel of FS though. (Note: they are both Tie Guan Yin/Iron Goddess varieties)
This was a very generously sized sample – at least 4 grams of tightly rolled leaves, total. I’ve steeped it twice so far, and may adjust the rating depending on how many it yields. I don’t quite have a system for how much QPR affects my ratings, but it is a factor i.e. if this yields a comparable number of steeps as Four Seasons, it will get a slightly higher rating because I like them similar amounts and this costs half as much. I find it relevant, because if a tea feels like a ripoff, I genuinely enjoy it less.
ETA: I’ve had six steeps of this now, and it’s getting milder, but no faster than the Four Seasons did.
2.3g leaf, 3.5 oz water, 45 second steeps near boiling
$21/4oz
Preparation
I’ve had this sample hanging around for a while now. I’m pretty eager to try it, although I see it has received some not-so-good reviews. This doesn’t really concern me because a lot of people didn’t seem to like Golden Moon’s White Licorice either, but I loved it.
The aroma of the dry leaf is just your average, meat and potatoes white tea smell. I don’t detect any ginger.
If I randomly drank from a cup of this, I wouldn’t know I was drinking something that is supposedly ginger flavored. I can’t taste ginger, I only taste a nice white tea. This tea tickles your tonsils on the way down, so maybe that’s the ginger. It would be nice if I could taste it, though.
I don’t taste ginger, but what I do taste is good.
Preparation
My samplers are dwindling down. I’ve been avoiding this one since I’ve come to realize i really do not like smoky teas. The tea smells super smoky and I’m really not too excited for this tea.
first sip. ugh. would it hurt to put some milk & sugar in? I just don’t think I could drink this straight. The taste is overwhelmingly smoke. That’s all i’m tasting. Ok wow, this is a /lot/ better with some skim milk and an equal packet. Like extremely better. It’s still quite a bit smoky, but completely drinkable. I’m actually getting some black tea taste now, but still overall it’s a pretty smoky tea and i’m not a fan.
Preparation
A light tea with a predominately green tea flavor. Significant floral notes, almost to the point of being a green jasmine tea. The floral taste doesn’t last long and it is a green tea that you get as an aftertaste.
I wouldn’t be surprised to find this tea in a better quality Chinese restaurant.
Preparation
The leaves smell very intense, both fruit and honey smell. Tea smells similar which is actually really nice. Nice brown honey color.
Its sweetish with a strong honey taste. Not bad for a fruity thing. Pear is mixed quite well with honey.
For me this is pretty good…
