1598 Tasting Notes
I bought this because Sil was so excited about it that I was curious to try it as well. Also, I needed to spend $40 for the free shipping to Canada! (I love this policy by the way.)
So this tea seems to be the lovechild of Verdant’s Laoshan Black and DAVIDsTEA’s Ceylon Spring. It has honey and chocolate and oats like the LB, yet there’s also CS’s grassy notes present too. It’s almost like a burnt grass, but without being unpleasantly so.
Hmm. I love that we can describe things as burnt grass, or earthy, or fishy and in this sense it’s a good thing, but if it were something else I consumed a lot of like steak or cake or carrots, it would be very disappointing.
This is good. I’ll keep resteeping is at I’d like to get a better idea of which one I like better – this, or either of its “parents.”
Preparation
This is a mini-sipdown as I’m using the last of my sample pouch, but will get my 5 bag tagalog with my H&S shipment on Monday! :P
I would have bought a tin but they were out of stock. #disappoint There will be other orders! (I’m losing interest in flavored teas, but I DO enjoy these ones).
This was an obvious purchase. Grape is so good! And this works well with the oolong base. The grape flavoring reminds me of concord grapes and it makes for a refreshing iced tea.
I wish I’d kept my leaves as I left my package at work, and I’d like another cup!
So we went to Blendz for fancy drinks and I grabbed a shaken iced tea (black dragon blend). It’s really good. They added lemon to it and I can’t help but wonder why my ice tea isn’t as good when I make it.
More experiments needed. Maybe they added sugar to this?
I haven’t been able to make an iced black tea that I have liked yet at home. Always too bitter…..I guess I should try a cold brew…..
I put a pinch of baking soda in while it’s brewing, and do a short brewing time with slightly cooler water. This is pretty much only for black teas, though. :) It’s still not perfect, but I find it’s better.
Lilysmom – I’d try cold brew – I think you’re less likely to get bitterness that way.
And baking soda? Crazy. I would never have thought of that!
I cold brewed a big pitcher of H&S black black currant overnight ….. It was ok, not bitter, but possibly still over brewed……drinkable tho……do you think cold brewing keeps any caffeine in the tea? I would love a cold black tea with caffeine to drink in the morning…..will try the baking soda magic and see how that works……
What’s up with this skull-crushing headache? >____>
I’m not impressed. This tea is tasty though. I’m trying to alternate between this and water in case it’s a) lack of caffeine or b) lack of water that’s contributing to this.
FOR SCIENCE.
This is a pleasant and inoffensive tea. The base is smooth, but doesn’t really stand out, and the fruit is good: naturally tasty without loads of artificial flavourings etc.
I’ll have to order samples from them some time as I’ve been happy with what I’ve had!
Thanks Sil!
Oh and it’s my birthday and I ended up getting the new Kindle Paperwhite and I just want to go home re-organize my entire digital library because I’m cool like that. :P But I am working instead, and will watch the Hobbit later with friends and eat ice cream cake. I’ve got all weekend to organize my books. (Well realistically, I have the next few years to do that unless I break it). I absolutely LOVE that I can add books/fanfic to it just by emailing it. I was considering the Kobo but that feature is an absolute must for me.
Guys – I am SO spoiled. :)
I caved and I have NO regrets so far. :P Now I’m just getting the old one ready so I can pass it on to someone else who might enjoy it.
:D I usually read on my iPad since I’m reading so many journal articles still, but I can see how a Kindle would be nice.
Happy Birthday! I am tempted by the paperwhite too! I remember waiting and waiting for the first ever Kindle to be available in Canada ( as an aside, Kindles were available in the Congo, before they were available in Canada). The very first day they were online for Canada, I ordered. I don’t use my old kindle much now – a new paperwhite would be lovely! Your plans for birthday shopping and new tea and work clothes sound great – you sound like me! If you also like spa visits and cats (!) then I think we are related….a sistah from another mistah?…. Maybe…..anyway Happy Birthday! Sounds like a very nice day!
lol this review cracked me up yesterday :)
:P
Cute!
