Homemade advent day 17

I’m down to only one more cup of this since I used about 2 tsp for my cup this morning. I appreciate how reliable this tea is because it always makes a solid cup. The floral rose flavour and fruity peach work well together. There is a lot more fruit than flower but I’m fine with this because the rose is hiding in the aftersip. There is a natural sweetness and vegetal quality to the base. The base is smooth and slightly thick but also almost creamy.

Flavors: Creamy, Fruity, Peach, Rose, Smooth, Stonefruit, Sweet, Vegetal

190 °F / 87 °C 8 min or more

I love peppermint. So simple and relaxing. Not a lot to say about this one. It is a nice (And cheap) peppermint that comes in teabags.

Homemade advent day 14

I tried to brew this strong (15+ minutes steeping in hot water, then splash of soy milk) but it tastes lackluster. A 65/100 at best. The black base is fine but nothing remarkable. The berries are more of a generic fruitiness today instead of specific berries. I love the idea of this blend, but this cup just isn’t great. I’m not changing my rating just yet because it is possible my microwave didn’t heat up the water as much as it should have (it acts weirdly sometimes)

Flavors: Fruity, Tannin

Home made advent day 9

This is my new go-to spearmint now that my previous sources are too expensive or no longer sell a spearmint tea. This is just plain spearmint with no added flavours. I like the sweetness that comes from spearmint and it has less menthol than peppermint. It also doesn’t induce heartburn as much as peppermint does after a meal. I like how fresh this spearmint is and that the leaves are broken into the perfect size (not fine dust but not too large).

Flavors: Spearmint, Sweet

I’m always taking Tums so I can eat spicy food and drink mint tea with minimal heartburn. It’s pretty bad without the Tums ):

Homemade advent day 11

I’ve never had this blend before but I really enjoyed it. I went into the cup not knowing what type of tea it was other than that it smelled fruity and looked like a black tea.

It reminds me of a muscat tea I once had from Lupicia. Wine/grape flavours, fruity notes, and something I thought was mango and strawberry. Mostly the mango, though. I was almost fooled into wondering if this was an oolong because the wine flavour made me think of a fruity and floral jade oolong. If you have ever had the mango oolong, momo supreme, or muscat oolong you will probably enjoy this blend. I would describe it as mostly fruity with some ripe fruit notes, hints of grape/wine and mango, and a flavourful but smooth base. No bitterness or sour tannicity here!

Flavors: Floral, Fruit Tree Flowers, Fruity, Grapes, Mango, White Grapes, White Wine

195 °F / 90 °C 5 min, 0 sec

Homemade Advent Day 12

This week is going to be so busy. I needed a nice winter drink to get me going after a mostly sleepless night. It is especially difficult knowing my week has so much going on (a lot of virtual meetings and working from home projects). I chose to make a sparkling rose latte. If you don’t know what this is, it is a drink that Starbucks (used to? still does?) offer which uses ground rooibos powder, frothed milk, and blossoming rose syrup (a rose flavoured sweet syrup with a red fruit note). I made this myself using a store bought ground rooibos and rose syrup. It is one of my favourite drinks because it is sweet and very tasty. I use 3/4 soy milk and 1/4 water (boiling hot and then whisked until frothy), whisk in the rooibos powder and some rose syrup and there you have it!

Flavors: Creamy, Rooibos, Rose, Sweet, Thick

Sounds delicious!

Ooh That sounds so good I wish the U.S. Starbucks offered this. I might try and make this at home.

Homemade Advent 2020 Day 9

I only have one more cup of this and I’m panicking. This is one of my favourite blends of all time and I desperately need more. Hopefully they bring it back some day. I bought roasted macadamia nuts at Costco last month and have been munching on a handful of them while drinking this. Such a good pairing and both the nuts and the tea are rich and buttery.

I brewed this one up strong (~20 minutes steeping) and added a splash of soy milk. I really enjoy the coconut and its thick, creamy contribution to this blend. The raspberry is wonderful. One thing that really intrigues me is how toasty the coconut it. It has not gone rancid even though this blend is older.

Flavors: Coconut, Cream, Fruity, Nutty, Raspberry, Sweet, Thick, Toasted

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 8 min or more

I love macadamia nuts. I’ve bought the Costco bag before too. The last time they went rancid before I got halfway through the bag. Need to remember to keep them in the freezer next time I buy them.

Tea advent day 5

I keep forgetting to log these. Better late then never, I guess.

This is a tasty oolong with buttery tropical fruit notes and some burnt sugar/toasted grain notes. It feels like a nice balance between a jade oolong and a roasted oolong.

Homemade advent day 4

I love this tea but I’m running out. I like to brew it strong and add milk. I only drink the decaf version and find sometimes you need to brew it a while or use two teabags if you have a large cup (500+ mL). It has a malty, thick, oat flavour with strong maple notes. I often drink this when I’m craving dessert or if I’m too lazy to clean my tea steepers (this comes as teabags and loose, I have the teabags)

Flavors: Cream, Malt, Maple, Oats, Tannin, Thick

Bio

I am a biochem major hoping for a career in research genetics and evolutionary biology. I love science fiction and spend too much of my time reading comic books. I’m a passionate keeper of spiders, cacti, and exotic plants. I eat a vegan, plant-based diet for moral and environmental reasons (I mention this only because it is relevant to which flavoured teas I drink).

I drink mostly flavoured and low caffeine teas/tisanes, but I will try anything twice. As far as pure teas go, I gravitate towards whites, yellows, and jade oolongs. I’m always open for trades and sample sales/exchanges. Message me any time :)

My cupboard is mostly up to date. For a more comprehensive list, see my stash spreadsheet here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-HjWKR3um-xEnj6HC9vMvKXOAyj_bpW5u_2ixEC20-k/edit?usp=sharing
