1113 Tasting Notes

drank Ta Oolong by Tea From Vietnam
1113 tasting notes

Thanks to Zennenn, I am able to try one of the teas from this company finally :)

Tea Truth from Andrew:
Drinking tea has cycles about it just like the seasons in the year. During the winter one drinks a strong cup of shou or a yancha to keep warm, while in the spring a cup of sencha or dragonwell makes the grass seem vibrant even though taste does no such thing. While these seasons are not needed to enjoy the tea that they compliment so well, it is nice to pair tea with the seasons.

This winter I have been drinking a lot of yancha and drinking a cup of this reminded me of how happy I was when Beautiful Taiwan Tea finally sent out the packages from their Kickstarter. This tea took me back in time a bit and reminded me that there is only a few more months until I am back to drinking my favorite tea from the newer harvest; green oolongs :)

This was a pleasant tea with a tad of cream mixed with the buttery texture. The tea is tightly rolled so it needs time to unravel, gongfu was a bit of a trick with this one. With six steeps out of this, it was rather enjoyable.

Me as well.

March – Yin Zhen
April – Feng Huang
May – Tie Guan Yin

Its a good thing, I’m going to finish off all my Yinzhen which is running out & not buy any more. I’m hoping its a good season & no drought

Finally, I made an ETTE tea purchase!
Thank you Black Friday / Cyber Monday :)

Why did I chose this out of everything? It’s an oolong blend that has bergamot, coconut, and other stuff, how cool is that?
I ended up with three steeps added together which ended up being a rounded milk oolong with some citrus notes and a cream to it that was pleasant.
This is something I enjoy and will continue to drink because of how smooth it is. Based on the smell and look of the tea, I wouldn’t think much of it. The milk oolong is tiny and the smell from the lotus is strong. That smell doesn’t carry over into the tea, THANK YOU TEA. Interestingly enough, the milk oolong used in this is quality because when it unfurls there are rather nice sized leaf which I would have not guessed by just eye balling it before the brew.

I’m unsure how just one brew of this would taste opposed to multiple, but I knew I wanted to have multiple to get a balanced tea because I didn’t want a strong bergamot nor a lot of coconut going on. Pretty glad I finally have an ETTE tea container; Victor’s marketing works well because I have been window shopping his blends for some time.

Someone better do another ETTE group buy… waiting a whole year doesn’t sound enjoyable.

I must have been trying to create a new word :/

This is a tasty cup for sure. I ended up having a session of this with my mom while my niece was over.
The peppermint isn’t full leaf so it’s hard to measure it out to have what 52Teas intended a serving to have in it. I believe I had a decent portion in everything that I used to steep with. The chocolate and malt notes compliment each other as they should, while the peppermint is the background noise of the conversation. While I don’t see any sweetness to associate with marshmallow, I’ll the name of the tea and acknowledge that this is something I enjoyed drinking.
This can be resteeped for a lightly malted black tea with a nice finish for your less than boiled water that has been set aside; thus, you can compare the fully blended cup to a partial for the base within the blend.

tea123

Is this black tea?

Liquid Proust

The base is a black tea mixture, yes.

tea123

Thanks. That last sentence had me really confused.

Liquid Proust

I was just saying the first steep is more of a blended tea while the second steep is more of a straight (as in the items used in the blend start to vanish in regards to their added tasting notes)

Drinking this while eating chocolate :)
This is one of those blends I had to adapt for my taste. I ended up with a mixture of two different steeps which lowers the dryness from the much needed elements of ginger and nutmeg.
The result is a relaxing cup that goes along with the winter weather. I’m almost curious about adding a bit of milk to it next time and for me that is really rare, but if the semi dryness that comes with this were to disappear would make this a tea to drink during multiple occasions :)

Chocolate and a spicy houjicha sounds like a wonderful combination. :)

The smokey flavor overtook all possibility for this tea unfortunately as many have said. I tried it twice and even at a lower temperature it still comes out that way. I think the suggestion for nextime would be a 60% keemun 40% lapsang mixture because keemun and lapsang go well with one another.

Evol Ving Ness

So, adding a bit of keemun would smooth things out a bit then with the existing blend. Thanks for the tip. Though I am fine with the smokiness, it is good to have options.

i like smokey teas! ill try this someday

The qi… the qi… the qi…

Talk about being tea drunk. This guy ended up being dark amber throughout the session and I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Such a lovely tea to have a session with that changes taste within 10 seconds of steep time and about every third steep it tends to be somewhat different.
Going to drink the other 90’s stuff I have an make the hard decision on which would be the one to buy… hard choices.

Kirkoneill1988

sheng or shou?

DharmaTea

What’s the decision?

Liquid Proust

W2T’s 90’ HK Style is very similar for me. I have some 1980’s stuff as well, but my wallet is telling me to be careful with it because if I like it we will have to talk about our relationship.

I truly think this 99’ cake that RoyalTeaBay sold me is legit, but just not stored as well as others. The taste profile fits everything correct. The difference is the qi from the tea.

Overall I am looking at Tea Classico for their older stuff, W2T for their newer products, and other places for hidden gems (which I’ve only found one and it was a Mengku so it’s not very hidden)

This is one odd tea. The word ripe threw me off from my initial smell of the tea and look. While it may be a dark tea, I wouldn’t consider it ripe in the Yunnan ripe sense as this isn’t a dark earth taste for me. This is somewhat like wet puer that was fermented lightly and left lone for awhile.
I can’t say I will try it again because it wasn’t appealing to my taste buds. It’s god a wet woodsy taste to it with a slightly fading funk, which is to say that the later steeps are more rounded for tasting than the earlier steeps.

Receiving some of this in the mail in a swap made me happy because I have only had YS 9 year so far.
This is a full roast taste for sure. The first sip is very welcoming, but drinking it over a session becomes very dry. I don’t think either the 9 or 5 year is smoother, unless someone considers the dry factor to weight this one down.
This is more of a cup to drink when cold while the other is better to taste the minerals of the DHP. I like both and don’t see a clear difference between the roast and dryness of each.

Kirkoneill1988

IIRC, i tried this tea before. it was an ok tea :)

Unsure of what this even was, I had to look online to figure out how to brew it.
The experience was like the first time I ever drank guayusa; a new experience that makes it better simply because it was the first time.

This is a very alive earthy tea being that it is very grass like, but not a fresh grass… if that makes sense.
I’m unsure if this tea would continue to taste this way, but I feel like a comparison between high grade guyusa and mate would be in order to find out which of the three I actually prefer. The memory of each one, in taste terms, has deteriorated a bit as I have drank a lot of puer which is a much different type of drink.

I’ll probably end up buying some of this at some point to share with others because it doesn’t seem to be as popular as other teas around.

Haveteawilltravel

I love yaupon! This stuff is fantastic. I had some that was grown in Florida, and it was perfect.

I’ve never bought a fuding tea before so I’m grateful for the samples that people have sent me. This one is two years old which makes it a bit more appealing to me, in a way that it is a bit unique in that regard opposed to the others.
This has notes of what I would describe as fading toast as if the flavor is disappearing. It’s a bit more settled than a fresh fuding, but I’m not sure if I can really say that as I’ve only has two. I’ll just say that this was smoother than I expected.
While it was a fun experience, I don’t believe fuding is a tea variation for me; I say this after three different sessions with this particular tea and others.

Kirkoneill1988

any leather or fishyness?

Liquid Proust

I haven’t had a tea with fishyness yet, though I’d like to see what it is like just so I know

Kirkoneill1988

some cheap shous taste fishy. (more likely if they have gone bad.) it is hard to distinguish fishy from leather

Liquid Proust

Probably the wet storage… possibly

Kirkoneill1988

i dont know what a wet storage puerh tastes like :(
