1113 Tasting Notes
90% of the time I don’t read reviews prior to writing my own, but this was a rather odd tasting for me… even with two notes on this, I stand with AllanK. This is a very hard tea to define in regards to what it taste like or if those taste are ones that I like.
Only the back of the tongue feels the liquid once it goes down, leaving nothing to reexamine on the tip. I tried to leave the liquid at the front for a few seconds, still the back is the only place holding a feel to which I’m not sure if there is a taste. Very thing texture which isn’t an issue, but I just cannot describe the taste. Taste like a piece of grapefruit skin that was underneath a Hot Wheels car for roughly 20 months and then put into the tea as an experiment. So whatever that says to you. I suppose it doesn’t matter if I like it or not, in a fight Repave wins; round 1,2, and 3.
Imagine a milkshake. Now replace milk with flower nectar. Cover the top with cocoa. Add some salt. Shake. Warm up and add a little fruit juice to cool it down.
That is what this makes me think of.
I take that you like it? If so, glad I got you that sample. It’s a really good Yancha, very floral, cocoa like, and fruity like a Dan Cong. The price is outside my range for most Yan Cha’s, but it is definitely worth a sample.
If you’d like, I can send you some yancha that is way more expensive just so you can see what some of the stupid high end stuff is like; in case you’re curious, it is $2 per gram and I can only spare maybe 4g.
Sure. There are so many samples I’m going to try from you. Not including the giant quantities of the other teas that I’ve asked for lol.
After drinking two different parts of this beauty, I’m confident in saying this cake will pass its exam in a few years with an A+
The top layer, https://www.instagram.com/p/BDE0VoMRYMF/, is insanely beautiful leaf. YS will probably see a few of these moving as I have dedicated my whole cake (less the beenghole!) to sending out to those looking for a new and good sheng. Currently I’m at 13 people, but what’s funny is two Steepster friends have sent me some too :P
Picking from the beenghole and drinking some of it… not too much different. The liquid is begging to become thick, you can almost taste the viscosity talking to your mouth. Not sure if that develops over time, but it would be nice. After shock, which is what I’m calling it, hits the tongue only leaving behind a pucker; the only downfall right now, but it’s still a baby or a toddler right?
Taste wise: Somewhat of a half roasted mixture of vegetables going on that I am unable to put my finger on because that tongue pucker makes it hard to revist any taste just experienced.
The qi from this tea is legit though. Feeling real good, but not good enough to fly… damn, I really want to be able to fly. I’ve been watching Young Justice and Superboy can’t fly… I feel like him, powerful and unable to die but unable to fly.
The suns going down.Oh this was a fun review, oh yea… back to Slack / teachat
Solid mouth feel with this one. The camphor notes that you get are that of a wet one, not dry; which is nice. Hint of smoke provides more of a body as it wouldn’t if the tingle wasn’t there. A linger taste with mouth feel gives it a positive remark from me. No bitterness, but if there is… well, it’d be disguised within the mouth feel. Not my style of sheng, though I can tell it is better than many that are like it. Makes me curious as to finding out how long smoke and camphor notes can exist, surely a matured cake wouldn’t still have these notes would it? Say in 15 more years, wouldn’t it vanish from all sorts of storing/aging?
About an hour after drinking a raw pu’erh from YS, I find myself grabbing another sample package. Well, looks like ripe it is!
Upon brewing this, either my sample or the tea itself, it needed some help to open up or else I knew I wouldn’t be tasting the actual tea most of the session. About six steeps through and I can tell that this ripe doesn’t have what I look for in a ripe; cream notes or thick texture like I am almost drinking mud.
I’m insanely picky with ripe to be honest, but those who would like this would be the ones who like their pu really runny ;)
This has a solid fermentation taste throughout each steep; but please note I stopped at six because I wasn’t feeling the shu’ld drink this anymore.
mud: earth/fermentation, forest floor autumn leaves…. all are almost the same to me. takes great skill to tell the diference
or be the sort of person that eats mud and leaves in real life to know which is which. Thats dedication :D
@rasseru lol i go by smell (90% of what something smells like is what it will taste like; so i hear.)
With that YS sale going on… it’s time to sip through these samples instead of enjoying the best tea out there; being oolong.
Brewed this one up not knowing what they heck it was, just saw 2015 and was like: time to find a ‘nope’ right away due to young astringency. Well, that didn’t work out the way I thought it would.
This brew up a nice medium color for a sheng and had quite a texture to it. Thick liquid which makes me happy, but to describe the taste…. you know that taste of dehydrated fruit that companies call ‘authentically sweet’ but it really taste like someone made a fruit looking object out of colored paper and put sugar from 2003 on it? Well, that’s the kind of sweetness or fruity taste this has; whatever you want to call it.
It’s pretty nice. I’m tempted to look at the price, but I committed to not looking at any prices until I do all the drinking I can do. So, for now, this gets a ‘I like you’ sticker added to it.
Why… why… why did I have to add this tea to Steepster???
This is an absolutely wonderful in the middle tea that is making me smile. While it’s not 100% to my liking, I can pick apart the taste in this so well because it’s very clear on each sip. Each taste includes a well balanced amount of sweetness to astringency while keeping the integrity of vegetable notes WHILE having a slight floral overtone that is upfront and disappears as the astringency sets in with the sweetness rather quick.
This is one of those teas that make me question the concept of building something to store tea myself because I’d love to taste this throughout the years at 7 grams at every 3 month mark. Just… this is a lovely tea.
Nan Nuo can be good done right. Remind me I have a Dayi NanNuo that has some aged stuff blended in. Pretty interesting.
With only two YQH samples, I have been very picky on when I’ll use them. Today was beautiful outside and I just got the 6th book of the new printing of Master Keaton in the mail: https://www.instagram.com/p/BC_UbhwRYLN/
That made me go to my box of ‘this is the expensive tea samples’ with intentions to have a wonderful afternoon. The leaf looked rather dark with clear signs of age on it which excited me. Brewing this was pretty easy as the leaf opened on the second steep, however my findings are more negative than positive. This is not a raw pu’erh for me nor for others who like the lighter teas. If I would have blindly tried this tea, I would have given up at steep three as the first two were really hard to sip down. Very strong notes of leather and tobacco come out from this tea with an underlining sweetness similar to a raisin (not taste, but that small sweetness) and a nice mouth feel. While there is no bitterness to the taste, the texture that the liquid leaves behind has the similar feeling as that of a smoked tea where your mouth feels like it is being dried a bit even though your mouth feels like it is being dried a bit even though you just drank a liquid.
Well, since I did not blindly taste this and knowing what it was, I continued to brew this out. At least the tea was consistent for me in regards to all the mentioned taste. Continuous leather mixed with tobacco and a diminishing undertone of sweetness that gave it an attribute that I liked, I just can’t see myself wanting any more of this.
Now that I have finished my 12 steep session, I have decided to go check the price because in my head YQH means $$$. It looks like this tea is $.48 a gram which I wouldn’t consider a really high price as I associate with YQH. As usual, I read nothing of this tea before drinking it because I want my own thoughts to bring forward my tasting notes; it looks like this is noted to be stronger than its mellow cousins per the description which would have already made me realize it wouldn’t be one for me.
Going through the YQH and knowing my preference, it looks like I have two I’ll be looking at: 2004 Dingji Yesheng because yesheng is tied for my favorite with bang dong and the 2004 Jinhao Chawang.
I thought the Qizong was ok, but I preferred the Tejipin and the Dinjipin is quite nice too (but also quite pricey). Be interested to read your review of those if you have them. I can send you a sample of the Teji if you don’t (I don’t have any Dinji to offer)
Just looked at the description for a Master Keaton anime online…sounds sorta like an Indiana Jones type of thing. That sound about right? If so, I might be interested in it lol.
So far all the Yang Qing Hao raw I have drank have started with notes of tobacco, leather but by the time I was done with them the qi was generally so strong I didn’t care. Also, in the ones I have tried they improved after a few steeps.
Someone on Reddit sent me some roasted oolong for green oolong and the first I am drinking is this Formosa Nantou Dong Ding from Edmon’s via TeaGschwender
This tast 98% like Bigalow’s light blue box called ‘oolong’ which was the first tea that got me really into drinking tea. While it’s odd to have a loose leaf taste like a tea bag, I suppose that’s not so odd really considering it’s the same type of material just processed and chopped. I do enjoy this though as it’s nice dark, deep, and complex to the taste.
Let me tell you a short story:
A friend gifted me some of this and one day I decided to brew it. The thought of it’s taste, aroma, and feeling of fullfilment afterwords as lingered with my for 6 days straight and I keep thinking of when I will drink this next.
The it’s not over yet because this short story requires the author to buy more Dark Feather to keep writing it.
Until then: Dann this is good.
I tried to break off 6.5g of this tea to have a session. I ended up making a large pile of tea dust because the tuo was so compact. I only did about 3 steeps of it before I threw my 6.5g out. It was sooooooo strong, even with flash steeps.
I can’t seem to get a big enough chunk out of this leaf to do another good session with it.
I thought this one was pretty good. The qi was spectacular.
I liked thatonew, and to me it seems vastly superior to Repave. I still got 4 cakes of Repave and would trade them any time with Tei Ji :-)
@bef really? oh i wish i didnt mail my Teji to my IG friend for free….not sure if he’d like that anyway. While it tastes ok but its gut bomb for me.
second that @bef
@boychik yeah I think people either love or hate that Tei Ji tuo.
agreed @bef, this tea is much more special to me than repave (and I’m quite a fan of repave)..the qi on it really is amazing @haveteawilltravel
