From DAVIDsTEA

It’s all about the leaf

Looking for a taste of Canada? Try this red rooibos tea. It’s sweetened with (what else?) maple syrup and sprinkled with delicious maple leaf candies. Plus it’s 100% diplomatic (well, caffeine-free) and tastes great in both our official languages. With green rooibos, honeybush, caramel and toffee bits to shake things up. A truly authentic Canadian experience.

Ingredients: South African green and red rooibos, honeybush, caramel bits, toffee bits, candy leaves, artificial and natural flavouring*.

Allergens: Soy, dairy and tree nuts

This tea was added to my collection because I need more caffeine free teas. Not easy since my favorites are the flavored black teas. Anyway, the dry smell is nice just not too strong. I can smell the maple and see the pretty leaves.

Taste… Meh. I can taste a light maple with what seems to be a hint of caramel. It is sweet so no need to add sugar. I wonder if milk will bring out the maple flavor more.

I added milk. It is still sweet, if not sweeter, but I am still not blown away. I think I like birthday cake more. They are similar but birthday cake has a stronger taste.

I am definitely going to drink what is in my stash, but I don’t think this tea will have a permanent place in my cupboard.

Another sample from TassieTeaGirl. Best without anything added — with even a bit of sugar added, the sweetness became quite chemical, but without sugar it was just enough to scrape through as a dessert tea. The maple leaves are an adorable touch.

You want a sweet tea? I WILL GIVE YOU A SWEET TEA! Here it is; Oh Canada! Nothing could be sweeter than this cheery blend of toffee, caramel, maple syrup, more stuff that aren’t necessarily sweet, and a garnish of cute, colourful maple candies to top it off, how can you go wrong?! Of course, if you dislike sweet teas, this is a very sweet tea, but wow, is it ever fun!

I find this tea particularly wonderful for autumn (maybe it’s the little maple leaves, makes me see the changing leaves outside!) alongside David’s Tea’s Pumpkin Chai, but whereas P-Chai brings me to a mellow, calm, warm place, Oh Canada takes me on a sweet, bubbly ride through the orange-and-yellow forests!

Also, this cheers me up immensely when I have a cold; it’s absolutely a comfort tea, and while I wouldn’t have it every day, it’s still an absolute joy to have on hand!

I feel I should also add that this is one of the very, very few Rooibos teas I will drink regularly – generally I prefer a strong black tea that will pair well with (too much) milk without getting drowned out. But Oh Canada! stands on its own two feet, even paired with milk, and still pulls through more than admirably. I’m not sure I’ve found a lot of Rooibos blends that can say that, at least not ones I love this much. It’s a great bonus to a lovely tea.

My God! The aroma the moment you open this tea. Instant and strong maple syrup. So much maple details. Just smelling this tea is enough to make you end every line with eh, eh?

But, a tea is not just a well scented beverage. I am so glad the maple flavor is working with the rooibos taste, instead of the rooibos taste overtaking everything. It is such a full maple flavor, with a bit of a winter kick. Quite beautiful.

But the aroma of maple syrup just doesn’t fail to comfort. This is a great late winter/early spring tea.

Day 46 of my 101 days of tea!

2tsp in my teaball, brewed in a large mug.

On its own, I find the tea not quite up to snuff. However, add a bit of milk, and that’s when the magic happens. The creaminess of the milk (and I’m using skim, so I suppose “creaminess” may not be the right word….) compliments the sweetness of the tea, showcasing it more and adding just the right mouth feel for me to really appreciate the tea.

I love maple, and this tea really packs a flavorful punch. I worry about the maple candies in it, though. I don’t see how it can possibly be 0-calorie.

With milk and sweetener (yes, I do put sweetener in everything) this reminds of drinking maple milk as a kid, at the maple sap tapping place near my house.
My rating would be higher, but after drinking it a while, this tea tends to make me nauseous. I don’t know why. Maybe the rooibos? I like rooibos though.

As much as I like maple syrup and of course love Canada, this was a little bit too much sweet maple syrup for me. I wasn’t expecting it to be quite that strong.

It would make an amazing syrup though. I wish I would have seen that syrup recipes in the DT newsletter when I had this tea.

This tea really took me by surprise. The maple flavour works with the rooibos perfectly. I like to use the travel press mug or a tea pouch so i can leave the tea steeping as I drink it. I sweeten it with a little bit of maple syrup and some vanilla soy milk :) You don’t have to love maple to love this tea – I highly recommend it.
