Since I woke up insanely early this morning, I got all experimenty and tried lots of things with extremely mixed results. Then I decided it was time to just go to my happy place. And it is a happy place indeed.

Enjoying a great big fat 7-minute-steeped cup of this and wishing I had a great big fat chocolate croissant to go with it.

A LONG hot steep of my beloved Special Dark is assisting with my recovery from that fuzzy-headed-not-quite-a-hangover feeling brought on by one too many lemon drops last night. I’m starting to feel a little more human.

oh, those lemon drops! This is the tea to help clear that right outta ya!!

I hope you had fun ;-)

Yes, again! I woke up ridiculously early (in fact, it is still ridiculously early) and headed out to my deck for a bunch of sun salutations. In the dark.It is already 64 lovely degrees and will get into the low 80s later. Right this minute, I love Texas weather. Ask me again in mid-July though. Today will be a very indulgent day for me. I SHOULD clean my house. Instead I’m doing yoga and going for a thai massage with a friend and trying a new restaurant later.

I got a whole bunch of new tea in the last week and I had every intention of trying something different this morning. And yet. Here I am sipping on a huge steamy mug of deep, dark, chocolately awesomeness with my dogs curled up in the bed. Because this is my indulgent day and THIS is what I wanted. I steeped for 7 minutes and even put in a little half and half a wee spoon of local creamed honey.

Special Dark reminds me very much of my yin yoga practice – long deep holds that you relax into. Yin is the black side of the coin. It is soft and slow and surrender.

I have an insanely stressful job and this is helping me hit the re-set button. This tea is all bottom. Like J-Lo, Kim Kardashian kinda bottom. Big, round and and full. This tea is Barry White singing Love Serenade – its alll about the little bit of naughty slow jam: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qj1QRbhEmlU

TeaBrat

Sounds like a great day! I love yoga and hope to get back to it some day!

looseTman

“I got a whole bunch of new tea in the last week and I had every intention of trying something different this morning. And yet. Here I am sipping on a huge steamy mug of deep, dark, chocolately awesomeness …” Sounds wonderful! Garret should be very very happy!

MzPriss

@TeaBrat – I promise you that I am not exaggerating when I say that for me, yoga was/is absolutely life changing. There are so many kinds that you can find one that works for you and makes your life better, even if your life is just fine the way it is.

@Tman – Well a whole bunch of the new tea that came was from Garret :) – but he strikes me as a pretty happy guy in general anyway. I need to get on trying all of my new Keemuns.

looseTman

It’s looseTman as opposed to Tbagman :-)

MzPriss

@TeaBrat – I read your post about yoga wrong. You want to get back to it – not start it. I think its naptime.

Garret

I am happy LooseTman :) tea and yoga! Yoga is amazing. Yoga is life. So happy to know more tea heads who are into yoga.

looseTman

Garret,
The Steepster community appears to truly enjoy your teas. I look forward to the Mandala Tea experience. Congrat’s on your success!

Garret

Thanks a ton, Tman! We are the epitome of a small business. 3 people trying to make this whole thing go so it is very gratifying to be able to feel the love, that’s for sure. I began importing tea back in 2005 but since selling my wellness center and focusing only on tea (opened this new shop exactly one year ago in Rochester, MN), it is actually happening for us. Hard work, countless hours, but more and more joy to be experienced all the time. Have a great day, my friend!

looseTman

You’re welcome! May you also have a great day Garret!

Jude

Oh yeah, after a session of yin I feel like a bird flying … so wonderful… and only discovered it in my 4th decade of life after 20 years of other types of yoga! Other styles of yoga are great but yin is different. So if this tea is like yin, I am going to have to try it.

Just steeped my first cup of Special Dark. I’m groggy from approximately zero hours of sleep (its South By Southwest y’all!) and normally I would put in all sorts of chocolatey, depth, complexity, etc notes. I’m exhausted. This tea was freaking awesome so I’m gonna leave this note at holy shit! This is GOOD tea and go have another cup.

keychange

good enough for me! get some sleep though!

MzPriss

Yeah I need to, but there id all this music I want to see, and friends from out of town and things I want to do start at 1 pm and after two cups of this outrageously good tea – I won’t be sleeping. I will likely hit the wall tonight and not stay out til 5 am.

Garret

This review had us all cracking up here at the tea shop!! Way to wake us up after a yoga sesh! We were out late last night listening and dancing to some New Orleans musicians who were in town last night. Rock on, my friend!

Finished this one today as well. Sad to see it go, but i know it’ll be back. Smooth, dark and delicious.

Trying to drink some puerh today while i can. I’ve only got one more session with this one, so that’s sad. But this is a great “intermission” for the morning when i have a chance to run to the kitchen to make a quick steep lol. I’m enjoying the couple of steeps that i’ve had so far, and will continue this for a while. I’ll have to put this on the reorder list whenever i get a chance to pick up some more puerh from Mandala….got a ways to go before then though.

Another puerh i’ve been drinking this morning and another one that i love for different reasons than special dark. This one is more bold and dark. smooth and delicious but not as creamy as special dark. I love the way this one just holds up even if you over steep it or brew western

85

been drinking this all day – only way i’ll get through some of my puerh! Really enjoying revisiting this one. Smooth, dark, bold…also pairs perfectly with golden oreos! haha

gmathis

Have you seen or tried the golden Oreos with speculoos (cookie butter) filling? Normally I am a black and white Oreo purist, but these are spot on. I did not discover speculoos until this summer, but I can eat it straight out of the jar on spoon. (Tastes like a liquefied sugar cookie with cinnamon.)

Sil

oh man. i haven’t haha, but then we don’t get all the weird things in canada… but i’ll keep my eye out for them

Sil

nice. worse case, i’m back in the US in 2 wks :)

85

I figured with no water today for some indeterminate amount of time, a puerh was in order since i don’t need to rinse brew baskets and such in order to move on to a new tea. this is another one i love. Just a deep, rich, smooth, sweet brew full of goodness.

85

At some point i need to get cracking on my puerh, so i pulled this one out today. Trying to figure out which of my options i might enjoy drinking western brew at work in an effort to try and dig in to some of the abundance of puerh i have. I really have missed my mandala teas – i’m glad they’re working on getting back in to things. love the creaminess of this one, even if it’s not special dark :)

Soooo my morning has been sort of awesome. I know it’s friday but i woke up early, and actually felt rested even though i went to bed late again. My other half didn’t have work today so he was still in bed, snoring away. I managed to get up and make myself a bagel and creamcheese while boiling water. Why is this morning awesome? It’s been quiet in the apartment – even as far as the neighbours go. I’m working from home today :) It’s raining in Toronto, so i’ve been able to sit, relax and listen to the rain while having tea, including a number of rounds of this one, which i start with. And slowly, steepster has woken up….folks have started to get online with work…but there’s a calmness to everything. Friday is finally here and it’s time to keep it slow. Only thing i’m missing, is the smell of rain….rain here smells different than out west. But life is good. My weekend is shaping up to be a good one and i’ve got my health, tea friends, friends here….a wedding to plan, travelling to be had, a job and my best friend to share it all with. life is just good. Sure work sucks the life out of me…but at the end of the day… i’ve got so much to be thankful for, that it hard seems worth the blip.

Happy friday everyone! Last one in March :)

(oh…and this tea? i love it…there are days when I think i might like this even more than special dark. There’s just something delightful about all of Mandala’s puerhs that i’ve tried. This one is the perfect accompaniment to this morning’s symphony)

caile

So nice! :) Happy friday to you as well.

Dexter inspired me. I’m sure i’ve had this before but i guess i forgot to log it? I’m too lazy to deal with a gaiwan today so i just made this up as a western brew and let it steep. for ages. sooo good! i’m almost tempted to add a splash of milk or maple syrup to this but i’ll opt for passing on that this time,. Instead i’m just enjoying this bold cup of delicious.

Preparation
Boiling 6 min, 0 sec
Dexter

Glad to inspire you. The question is: Am I nuts, or is this similar – in a toned down version sort of way – to Special Dark when western steeped for quite awhile?

Sil

in some ways..this one tastes better than the western brew of special dark…though i like western brew of special dark after a few steepings..if that makes sense.. they’re similar and yet different as you mentioned :)

Stephanie

I need to try this one western

I just drank my last bit of this fine tea. I didn’t really want it hot for some reason so I decided to make it iced. I’ve never really tried that with a sheng before but it turned out perfectly. I took it on a run with me and the minty, slightly smoky kick was just what I needed. Managed to run to the library and then run home with an overstuffed bag of books—they were having a book sale and I am weak. I blame Wild Monk not for my book hoarding but for the energy to run home with a 10+lb bag of books.

Preparation

mmmm so good…

graceatblb

It is. I have to get a cake of this one. I’ve heard that Mandala orders come in bunches right. That’s an excuse. I think.

Cheri

Any excuse for a tea order, right?

Sil

caaaareful grace lol

Dexter

Love this one, working on my second cake of it….

Jiāng Luo

I bought a cake and wild monk loose maocha because I didnt want to break off any of the cake, are they fairly similar in taste?

Garret

Soooo very happy you are enjoying this! It is perfect tea for before a run. I had a joyful 6 mile run this morning after being fueled by the mao cha from this same farm this morning.

Jiang… the current Wild Monk cake is from spring material I bought from producer in 2012. The mao cha that is available right now is autumn-picked 2013. Definitely similarities, but the cake is taking some interesting turns in flavor/aroma as it ages. Both are nice. We are awaiting the arrival of the new wild monk cakes that I had pressed using the autumn 2013 material. I hope you enjoy it! Big difference between sheng and shu pu’er. I like both styles.

Had a nice session with this over a couple of nights. I really didn’t take down notes as I just enjoyed it for what it was. A simple tea . Brewed simply and enjoyed greatly. In times of controversy about sources and ages this is still a well sourced one. Hand picked and processed in good order as testament of the spent leaves.

I ordered this loose maocha and a cake on the last Mandala order I got. I have put the cake away but I wanted to sample it in its current state. This tea has an assorted size of leak in it. By volume it is heavier than lots of other puerhs I have tried. I was surpised at how little it actually to to get 9 grams. Might be the thick burly leaf in it.
I got down to business with this one in the yixing. I gave a flash rinse and opened the to to smell the aroma of the wet leaf. This is spicy almost like that little burn wasabi or hot mustard can give in the aroma department.
I steeped this for only about 5 seconds before pouring.
This tea has so many notes it is crazy! You have buttery, pine, sweet, bitter ,floral.
It is velvety but strong, floral with some bitter, citrus y and lots of flavors. You will get the tongue numbing with this one!
This is a rock on dead on fine sheng. I really look forward to this one when it ages.

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 0 min, 15 sec 11 g 10 OZ / 295 ML
Garret

Yahoooooo!!!!!!! So happy that you are enjoying this one. I love it. I love you review!

John… the mao cha you are drinking is autumn 2013. The mao cha I used to make the wild monk cake is spring 2012. The mao cha is from the same producer. I also just got done with a pressing of this autumn 2013 mao cha for a wild monk followup. It is sooo good.

I look forward to hearing what think about the 2012 cake. Heck and the 2014 cake, too, for that matter :)

Thanks for getting down with the Wild Monk, John!

Terri HarpLady

It’s been awhile since I drank the loose version of this, but I’ve been planning to get the cake for awhile. Garret, you should make a special announcement when you unveil the new monk, because I’d like to get one of each, 2012 & the new one.

mrmopar

+1 on what Terri said!

I only did one brew with 8 grams in the yixing and only one 30 second steep so far. This is a very rich an velvety tea. It has notes of cocoa and slight hints of bittersweet chocolate also. It left me wanting another cup and I think it will eventually morph into a sweet caramel note in the later steeps. I wish I had done another cup last night while writing these notes but I will continue later today. This one has a certain “richness” that I have found only in the highest grade shous. It is a very impressive shou.

Flavors: Cocoa

Stephanie

I love this one :)

mrmopar

It’s a keeper for sure. I may buy some of this and put it up for a decade and see how it is then.

TheTeaFairy

I also thought it was impressive, and i’m so happy to have a decent supply of it. For now…nice to know you consider it special enough to want to age it :-)

mrmopar

Yeah when I can afford it and also the Green sheng I drank the other night. I just put 4 other orders in and I think I am going to be in real trouble for doing it….

TheTeaFairy

(just make sure to intercept the mailman first…to avoid the kind of troubles I think you are referring to…just saying)

mrmopar

I better “bribe” the mailman you mean!

TheTeaFairy

Haha! Now I know the extend of your troubles! Yes then, a bribe might be the only way out…(hmm, does he like good pu’erh by any chance??)

boychik

I shower my mailwoman in chocolate. And I love Special Dark.

mrmopar

I may have to pay out cash this time!

looseTman

Any SD updates?

mrmopar

I think I need to pull it out again soon.

I need Sheng! This and Wild Monk are my default shengs and there is a reason for that. Hot damn this is wonderful!

I put 7 grams in my awesome red gaiwan, 212 water, rinse followed by two infusions of 30 seconds, then five 1 minute infusions

1st steep green and shengy with that little bit of pucker and the tinest hint of grape

2nd getting the green floral with a slight bitterness and a touch of camphor

3rd Oh hello darling – Ive missed you! Opening up into that sublime deliciousness

4th There’s the grapey lovliness I adore so much with this tea

5th – 7th Still the grapes with a stronger camphor note and the most pleasant bitterness ever. I’ve got the tongue tingle, the chi buzz, the warm feeling all through my body and THIS
is the way to start a Sunday morning y’all. I will likely sip on this alllllll day!
Garret – I appreciate you for many reasons – this sheng is most definitely one of them :)

OMG I forgot a song! How about the Zydeco Boogaloo? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZHnu_mgQBs

Flavors: Floral, Grapes

TheTeaFairy

So cute! Happy Mandala sheng day :-) I had mine yesterday pretty much all day too!!!

SarsyPie

More grapey flavors in a pu’erh! I will note this one to try next!!! Wishlist! Wooo!

MzPriss

@Sars – this was first sheng and still one of my very favorite. I LOVE this one

MzPriss

LTF – you did the Autumn Song right? I may have to have some that later

SarsyPie

Well I have to order from Mandala again soon b/c I have decided that I simply cannot live without the Heart of the Old Tree. I am really taking a liking to pu’erhs because I feel like I can buy them, and not drink them all right away, and that’s totally ok because of the aging!!!!

MzPriss

I need some of that Heart of the Old Trees. I can’t believe I don’t have any. Right now I have buzzy sheng head and seriously – better than a lot of drugs I may or may not have tried.

Roughage

This sounds superb. I need to add this to my want list.

MzPriss

The Wild Mountain Roughage? If so, YES you need this. It’s delightful. I’m ordering the Old Trees as well :)

SarsyPie

Love this: “better than a lot of drugs I may or may not have tried”

Yeah, I am going to order more Mandala soon. Before I do, are there any other pu’erhs that you think I simply can’t live without, HoneyBelle? I want the Wild Mtn and more Heart of the Old Tree.

How about you, TTF? Let me know!

MzPriss

What I love: Special Dark of course, Imperial Bulang, Noble Mark(!), the Lincang. I have more but haven’t spent time with them – just got the Old nuggets. Shengs I love: THIS ONE!, Wild Monk(!), I’ve only done one roung with the Silver Needle – but I liked it, and I’m looking forward to the Autumn Song

SarsyPie

Thanks so much! I did get special dark. Loved it. I also just received the wild monk, but I did not try it yet. I need to get over my desire to keep it in it’s beautiful wrapper. LOL.

I will check out the other suggestions!!! <3 <3 <3

TheTeaFairy

Sarsonator, I loved all the ones MzPriss just mentioned…but I also loved Imperial Dark and Temple Stairs shou pu’erh which I only got to try lately. Yesterday’s session with autumn song was also unbelievable!

MzPriss

Sars – you wrap it back up in that beautiful wrapper so you get to keep looking at it :)

SarsyPie

OK… I got temple stairs, but I’ll add some imperial dark, too. Thank you both!

And MzP… I know. I just think it’s so pretty that I don’t want to mess it up! I’ll work carefully. :)

MzPriss

Yes you have to be sweet with it, but you can do it!

TheTeaFairy

Oh! I forgot about Lincang and phatty cake!! They are a little bolder though, having lincang right now…whoa!!!

MzPriss

OMG – Phatty Cake! How could I forget phatty caek? Probably because my cakes are in a box and I didn’t see them…

MzPriss

I need to quit typing because I am not good at it.

SarsyPie

Typing is overrated. You’re good at tea. :p

MzPriss

I <3 you Sars

TheTeaFairy

I will review lincang again shortly….YOU HAVE TO ADD THAT ONE Sars!

MzPriss

I’m about tmake my Dark Beauty cocktail. I told someone I would make a listing on here with instructions. I should do that today too.

SarsyPie

Steepster ate my comment!!!

I heart you, HoneyBelle!

Lincang was added! Can’t wait!!!!

What is Dark Beauty??? Sounds deeeeelish!!!

MzPriss

OH well now. Don’t know about my Dark Beauty cocktail? I will (very carefully this time) tell you:

16 oz boiling water
1 TBSP Special Dark
Big ass pinch of Black Beauty (Mandala)
Steep that bad boy for a while 5-7 minutes

Hellllllllo happiness. I have it every, single. morning. Makes the world turn right.

MzPriss

I would like to the clarify the above statement. It makes the world turn correctly not right.

Hillel

What a lovely picture of a perfect Sunday morning! I’m saving this for future use as a background on my computer. For the next couple of weeks, that place of honor goes to images of the Tour de France.

MzPriss

AWWWWWWW thanks Hillel – it was for Science!

This came to me as a sample with my recent Mandala order. It is my very first sheng. I posted about this tea on the pu-erh discussion and I mentioned that I think those who say pu-erh newbies should avoid shengs at first are kinda full of it. This one is very accessible. First steep is a little grassy and vegetal. Second there was slight bitterness (not in a bad way), more depth and little bit of butteriness and as it cools slightly, a little grape taste. VERY nice grapey aftertaste. Third steep very grapey aroma – fruity/floral with a little astringent buzz on my tongue. Number 4, still very pronouced grape aroma and more pronouced grape flavor. I REALLY like this. There is still a slight astringency but it is mellowing. The color is a paler green-gold and the aftertaste is less pronounced. Fifth steeping – it is thinning out now, with a bit of hay taste and more astringency. Aftertaste is similar to the fourth steep with a little bite. Sixth steep, aroma is less grapey. On first sip, all of the flavors have really mellowed. The astringency is dialed back with just a wee bit on my tongue and still a little muscat kind of grape but subdued. I’m going to stop here. This tea is beautiful. Love it. Nice qi buzz.

Having this cold today. I steeped up a tiny pot of it to use in a picture yesterday. But my acid reflux flare up had already had it’s fill of tea for the day and while I wanted the golden little coils in the photo I didn’t want to waste the tea. So I let it steep about 5 minutes all told and then put it in a cup in the fridge.

Cold it has a more pronounced hay flavor. Also more of the fruity notes come out. Tasty.
