Didn’t get much sleep after spending the night in the hospital because my SO has a kidney stone, so I just reached for something caffeinated that wouldn’t hurt my stomach.
I learned a while ago that the trick to enjoying DavidsTea’s flavored matchas is to set expectations. I initially expected them to be just flavored matcha with no additives, so the sugar would really throw me off. But once I started approaching them expecting something more like a chain-coffee-shop matcha latte drink, I found them much more enjoyable. With that in mind, this did the trick. It’s sweet, it tastes like honey with some lightly grassy matcha undertones, and I found that it was most enjoyable as a latte rather than with just water.

Shae

I hope SO is feeling better! Mine gets kidney stones too and they do not look fun.

Kaylee

Thanks Shae! He’s at least stable now and meds seem to be helping control the pain but I don’t think he’ll be better-better until the damn thing is finally out of him. I’m suddenly highly motivated to hydrate more though! Definitely not an experience I feel the need to share.

ashmanra

Oh sad! Ashman gets those, I have only ever had one. I hope it passes as quickly and painlessly as possible!

I found the lavender honey matcha to be really gross, so I was sort of dreading trying this one. I’m happy to say that it actually tastes just fine! I don’t really notice much honey or other flavoring, so it’s sort of just mildly flavored matcha. With my usual prep method, it was nothing amazing, but perfectly decent. Basically just regular sweetened matcha.

I bought a ton of this when it was originally released, and finally decided to take a bit out to enjoy. Made it as an iced latte, which was my preferred way of enjoying it when I first purchased it. I still really love it, but there’s almost a Double Bubble gum thing going on. It’s that super sweet powdery bubblegum flavor.

Steepster Freeze 2021 #2: 01/15/21

Take two on trying to get a good lemon ginger breakfast smoothie! This time I picked the Wild Honey Matcha from my advent stash, as honey seemed like a proper flavor pairing for lemon and ginger.

Full packet (1 tablespoon) whisked in one cup cold plain oat milk, until frothy. And… I really like this one! I’m getting mostly a floral flavor, and oddly, it tastes a bit like sakura to me!? And here, with a flavor profile of honey, I’m expecting sweet, so the sweetness of the blend doesn’t feel jarring/out of place to me. Sweet wildflowers with a subtle grassiness underneath; I find that I really like how floral flavors pair with the natural vegetal/grassy taste of matcha.

Shame I don’t have this one in a larger pack, since it was seasonal and is already gone. I would not mind having more of this one!

Smoothie was also success this time around! Matcha latte was whisked with mango (I dropped the peach which was overpowering the flavor last time), a tablespoon of lemon juice, a quarter teaspoon ginger powder, and some yogurt. The lemon tastes like a lemon cream dessert from the sweetness of the Wild Honey Matcha, and there is a very subtle ginger kick at the end of the sip. I could probably go slightly heavier on the ginger, but I’m quite satisfied with how it turned out!

DavidsTEA Matcha Advent Calendar 2020 – Day 15

Finally caught up on tasting notes!! Had this one this morning – it was another interesting one. I was looking forward to trying it, and I’m happy I tried it haha. It smelled weirdly sweet, and tasted weirdly sweet – it reminds me of a very old DT blend that for the life of me I cannot remember, I’d have to look through very old tasting notes to find it…but it was okay. Maybe it’s the floral sweetness that is throwing me off. As I’ve mentioned, we have our own bees that make very tasty honey (I’m a tad biased), so it’s always tough having other honey flavored things as I automatically compare them.

I will finish the sample as it wasn’t that bad, and I hope it grows on me a bit. It wasn’t unpleasant, just a bit weird to me. Maybe I’ll add some of the matcha honey to the next one!

Prepared in the usual method – 175 degree water, whisk, top up with hot water, drink.

DAVIDsTEA Matcha Advent Calendar – Day 15

Ugh, I’m having a hard time this morning… I really just wanted to stay in bed, and so did the puglets. They always look at me with such offense when I interrupt their snuggles and get up. XD Definitely my spirit animals…

Well, this is certainly an interesting flavor – wildflower honey? It doesn’t smell overly floral, thank goodness. I’m preparing it with 12 ounces of warm water and 4 ounces of warm milk as I just need some comfort this morning.

It’s quite mild in flavor, maybe I shouldn’t have added milk… Oh well, too late now! I’m not really sure whether I get a sense of honey, it’s difficult to tell with the sugar involved. I do get a bit of a floral lilt at the end of the sip, and I think it reminds me of fresh rose among other flowers. I’m no flower expert, so I have a hard time describing floral notes…

Even after taking a bite of toast with jam to cut the sweetness, I don’t think I taste honey. It’s more of a light, nectarous floral flavor. Honestly, I rather like it, which is surprising given I’m rather particular about floral flavors.

Speaking of jam, today’s is Fig-Cardamom Spread. I admit, I was very excited when I saw it, as I love figs and fig jam, and have a growing appreciation for cardamom lately. But to me, these two don’t work together… It comes out tasting a bit like menthol? Or dark molasses with menthol? Odd, and not very pleasant hah!

My smoothie bowl turned into a smoothie turned into a tiny smoothie shot with matcha. Just disaster after disaster so it’s not much but strawberry:banana smoothie mixed with this tastes pretty good at least.

ashmanra

That was a wild ride!

Yeah, it just kept getting worse but ultimately tasted good

(DavidsTea 82)

I hadn’t realized that I’d tried this one before. Oh well! I think my experience was better this time. I believe there was a run of DT bags (or maybe, just at the location I bought at) that transferred a smell to the tea, and that happened with my first taste of this one.

This time, no particularly artificial smells, and the matcha was actually quite nice. I could taste both the matcha and the honey flavouring, which I feel could have been a tad stronger. Upping the rating (75-80) as this is not my favourite matcha, but certainly tasty enough.

Sidenote: I really want Lavender Honey Matcha to come back. It was released while I was not paying attention, and the one time I saw it available, it was gone before I managed to check out :(

Mastress Alita

Gawds, how bad I want the Rose and Lavender Honey to return! I must be the only floral matcha fan in the land…

Kittenna

Hahaha. With my recent rose experiences, I’d probably order the rose if it came back, too.

Roswell Strange

Rose is my favourite matcha flavour that we’ve ever done – I hoarded SO MUCH rose matcha…

Iced Latte!

Whisked up in a chawan though, so I could still fancy drinking my iced latte. Delicious but, as I’ve observed in the past, it definitely has this creamy and toasty marshmallow quality when you drink it with milk.

Friendly reminder that I do not numerically rate DAVIDsTEA blends as I’m currently employed there and it would be an obvious conflict of interest. Any blends you see with numerical ratings were rated prior to my employment there. These reviews are a reflection of my personal thoughts and feelings regarding the teas, and not the company’s.
