From DAVIDsTEA

How sweet it is

Need a toffee break? This rich and decadent, all-natural blend of pu’erh, cocoa beans and caramel is the perfect sweet treat. With its mouth-watering aromas of caramel and browned butter, even steeping it feels like a luxury. But with all the benefits of pu’erh – and next to no calories – this is one little indulgence you can feel great about drinking. Try it with hot frothed milk and a shot of coffee liqueur. It just doesn’t get sweeter than that.

Ingredients: Pu’erh tea, cocoa beans, cocoa husk, caramel (condensed milk, sugar, glucose syrup, butterfat, sorbitol, mono and diglycerides), natural flavouring.

Contains milk.

Day 22 of the 2016 advent calendar! When this tea came out I REALLY wanted to try it but I was on a self-imposed tea ban so getting this in the calendar was a nice alternative. I can see just on inspection the lovely caramel bits, and the aroma is lovely and toffee-like too.

When steeped, the Pu’erh base starts to come through a lot more, making me a bit skeptical of trying this. The tea tastes better than my initial offputting by the Pu’erh, and it does well at being an ‘English toffee’ tea. I think that this tea would be perfect as a tea latte, and is decent with milk and sugar.

Overall, I am pleased with this tea, but there is that lingering note of Pu’erh in the background which does knock this tea down a peg or two for me. If I get this in a collection I’d be happy to drink it, but I might reach for other hot dessert teas before this one.

I am still undecided about this tea. I will drink what I have hear, but will probably not keep it stocked in my cupboard.

Dried the leaf scent is a pleasant dark chocolate. It brews a dark brown colour and produces a resemblance of toffee. Taste wise, it was a bitter chocolate flavour. The bitter taste is very over powering and mutes the chocolate flavours.

Colour me impressed, this is one of the few pu-erhs I have ever enjoyed. I’d say my favourite has been Chicago Tea Garden’s Sticky Rice tuocha, as a side note. For reference, I detest earthy flavours, like dirt and minerals, and anything resembling the ocean, so it makes sense that I tend to stay away from pu-erh.

Love the scent of the dry leaf. Very rich and creamy, like a gooey melted Caramilk. I tried this hot with some 2% milk, anticipated some pretty frightful base notes to come forth, but none could, that I recall. Should have taken a sip straight to really confirm this. The overall strength of the flavours were on the weaker side. I would have expected this to be thicker but it was like drinking a thin black tea with a splash of caramel. Makes me want to steep this more strongly next time.

Yes, next time. There will be a next time for a pu-erh in my life. Crazy.

Along with the orange chocolate pu’er, English toffee was high on my “must try” list. Three things made me gift this tea to a friend (who loved it): the lack of a toffee taste, the film of oil at the top (which is especially disgusting since I put milk in it), and the alcoholic aftertaste. It’s like having Bailey’s Irish cream without the cream, the sweetness and just…alcohol.

One thing to note is that it smells DIVINE. And it tastes nothing like the way it smells! That probably made it an even bigger let down in my books.

Like so many teas from this company, tastes very weak and unflavorful. Tastes fine but disappointing.

Last night I jump started my spring cleaning by going through my teas. Truth be told, in going through my collection I found 4 separate bags of Snow Day. I feel like I should get working on using it up, but my taste buds are like NOPE. I drink my teas without milk or sugar, and I’m getting really sick of teas that are sickly sweet right from the teapot. It’s 6am so I’m especially not thrilled at the idea of an uber sweet tea right now. Anyway, I found half a tin of English Toffee still tucked inside my advent calendar. I vaguely remember not hating it, and maybe even enjoying it the first time around. I opened it up and sniffed – smooth and sweet without being sickly sweet, and a hint of chocolate. Let’s steep that up!

While English toffee does contain tiny bits of caramel, it’s just nice and subtle. I feel like the cocoa and caramel are in perfect harmony to prevent this from being too bitter or too sweet. It’s the first thing I’ve consumed today and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. I’m shocked that I can barely remember drinking it the first time. Davids is having a big sale right now, and I’m even considering ordering the 100g tin.

Now I’m thinking how delicious this would be paired with scones and jam!! MMM!

This is a nice afternoon tea when I’m wanting a bit of sweetness after lunch. It’s pretty bland plain but a tiny bit of milk helps bring out the creamy cocoa/toffee notes in my opinion.
