Ruby Red

I had this almost a week ago now and am just getting around to reviewing it. The baby has been teething, and our daily routine has been interrupted quite a bit by that as well as other things, so the older boys have been bouncing off the walls. Needless to say, I haven’t had much time for tea.

I mostly remember that I liked this and it did seem to taste pleasantly of grapefruit. I’ll have to make another cup and possibly write a more nuanced note.

This has the grapefruit flavor nailed but there is added elements as well that I feel detracts from the tea as a whole. The apple and rose add sweet and floral which take away from what should be a bright and citrusy drink. Also, if I didn’t know better, I would blame licorice root for an underlying sweetness though it is coming from another source (maybe the chicory?) and I am just not loving it.

I think I missed actually drinking this earlier…. but I located it (randomly) in a bag at my boyfriend’s place, and opted to try some! It was actually surprisingly tasty! Really tasted like grapefruit – deliciously tangy and aromatic. Actually quite a good herbal.

Ruby Red + Main Squeeze (1:1), iced, sweetened with stevia.

This is a great combo for a Monday morning when you just cannot get your act together.

Also, I think I’m just going to keep adding random fruit blends to Main Squeeze. I don’t like Main Squeeze enough to repurchase it (at least not in large quantities), but the flavor’s unoffensive and pleasant. I like that, when mixed, it doesn’t compete with other flavorful, tropical-y blends.

I’m hoping to make a significant dent in my DT stash in the next month or so. Preparation is key. The majority of my teas are teas I prefer iced/cold, so it’s really just a matter of getting them into the pitcher…

really lovely, true pink grapefruit flavour; sweet and tart citrus aromas up front with the chicory root giving a bitter aftertaste. wonderful iced, would not drink hot but it would probably still taste just fine

Iced, this is great! I love grapefruit and this didn’t disappoint. When I get a custom tea in my “$1” mug, it’s usually this or black cherry.

Before Sugar – Light and tangy with a generic citrus taste. Does smell a bit like grapefruit.

After Sugar – Not as tangy but has more of a grapefruit flavor. Has a bit of a heavier feel to it but still quite pleasant.

Thank you VariaTEA for providing me with the chance to try this tea one more time! I remember really, really liking it and when I cold brewed your sample up I definitely got to experience that one more time. This tea is light, kind of Spring/Summer-y in vibe and really, really nails the red grapefruit flavour without tasting bitter or coming off as astringent. It’s naturally sweet, and that lemony note is very appreciated as well as a slightl flavour contrast.

Shauna’s just got home from her philosophy class: they were talking about cold infusion and her prof made an off handed comment about how that sounds like some sort of high end tea store, and that when they write their final for the class whoever can come up with the best theoretical tea for the store will get bonus points. So, here’s the tea I came up with for her:

Earlistotle

This unconventional Earl Grey draws inspiration from Aristotle. In addition to the traditionally used bergamot, this blend makes use of freeze dried grapes and mandarin segments as an homage to Aristotle’s Greek heritage.

I’ve recently gotten into a grapefruit kick… I loved this an iced tea! Tart, but not overly so, and very drinkable. Definitely going to be in the rotation!

mmm i think i’m torn on this one as to whether i like the cold brew or hot brew more. Both are enjoyable though i think the hot brew eeks out just a little as the winner. Mostly, because it makes the blend just a little smoother. It’s as close to ruby red as i imagine a brew getting to now that stacy’s gone. Not too shabby DT….not too shabby.
