drank White Chocolate Chai by DAVIDsTEA

sets a review down in an empty echoing hall

A whole chai collection from DT had me both intrigued and wary. Chais are a sort of delicate thing for me. I love ginger and cardamom and small (very small) amounts of cinnamon. I really don’t like heavy amounts of cinnamon. So whether or not I like a chai is really highly variable.

So this specific chai? Eh, it was okay. A good balance of spices, not one note more prominent than another. It was sweet from the white chocolate, but there wasn’t much flavour of white chocolate. All in all, it was a nice cuppa but nothing memorable.

Sip-down! Not a bad cup. Tasted like the peach juice from Tim’s. Not my usual choice in tea, but sweet and fruity, not at all tart.

A very warm and satusfying tea, I quite enjoyed my cuppa. Would enjoy it more if it wasn’t quite as sweet. Will be sad to see this go, but probably won’t seek out a restock.

drank Christmas Tea by Twinings

Do you want a convenient black tea that smells like Christmas parties at your second cousin’s house where her son gets way too touchy feely with his girlfriend who’s twice his age while your other cousin gets weirdly religious on you? Then yes, this is the tea for you. It smells like Christmas and tastes like black bagged tea that your mom makes. I only reached for it because the Kuerig seemed like less work than the kettle. Still, wasn’t bad.

This oolong tastes the way a Strawberry Shortcake doll smells. It’s . . . off-putting? But slightly tasty? Not a bad oolong, but the artificial strawberry has just taken over.

Unfortunately forgettable. Literally. I was so sure that I hadn’t tried this yet that I spent a good ten minutes hunting through my work tea cupboard looking for an unopened sample pack when it was sitting right in front of me, half-empty and neatly binder-clipped closed. It tastes like black tea and not a whole lot else – at least the black tea isn’t bad.

I think I found a good steep time. Right off the bat, it tastes exactly like a chocolate macaroon. Heavy on the coconut – actually, more like those chocolate-dipped coconut cookies American Girl Scouts sell (Samoas? I think I’m about to be divorced.) Very tasty. But we have lots of chocolate teas and lots of coconut teas, so probably won’t be restocked.

Crap. I need to restock on this. I tried a cup of Countess of Seville from DT, but it just wasn’t the same. It doesn’t blend the smokiness with the citrus just the way that this tea does.

Apparently I loved this tea the last time I had it, but today I found it a little underwhelming. It was good, but not great. Fruity and sweet, but overpowered the oolong base. Got a gorgeous colour when brewed up, though.

I’m going to have Katy Perry stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

Anyway, the tea! Dry, the leave had this amazing chocolaty smell, and that came through strongly in the brew. Not much cherry other than a faint sweet pop from that and the sprinkles (very American sprinkles). Delicious? Yes. Memorable enough to restock? Will have to wait for the second cup to decide.

Mmmm. Tea. I have become a believer.

I like oolongs and greens, and dark smoky flavours. And Earl Greys. All the Earl Greys. I have bent my nerd powers to learning as much as I can about tea and tea culture. I have started to ramble about tea.

Tea. Mmmm.
