From American Tea Room

Masala Chai is a classic Indian blend of bold, chopped Nilgiri black tea leaves and spicy bits of ginger, fragrant cinnamon, black pepper, cloves, and green cardamom. Brewed without milk, its liquor is a deep, hazy amber. The bold aroma of ginger is prevalent in its dry and infused forms. The liquor also has sweet aromas cinnamon spiced apple. In the mouth, flavors of tannic black tea emerge quickly then meld with the abundant spice for a rich, full, nuanced brew that is at once traditional and accessible. Masala Chai is fantastic straight, sweetened, with milk, or with both milk and sugar. Brew for slightly less time if you intend to drink it straight. For an indulgent Delhi-style masala chai experience, boil the blend for up to 30 minutes in milk, water and plenty of sugar.

This tea is certified USDA Organic.

Sipdown no. 100 of 2018 (no. 456 total). A sample.

Since there was so little left after my stove top cup this morning, I decided to make the rest, about half a cup’s worth, as a plain black tea.

Much more pepper this way. A nice little peppery dance on the tongue. Not sure why it hides so much made on the stove top, but that’s what makes tasting teas so endlessly fascinating!

Sipdown! I had a sample sachet of this I got free with my last Am. Tea Room order. Unfortunately I oversteeped it. Maybe I should have had this iced.

The base was super bitter (I had to dilute it 50%, and it was still bitter), but I wish I had soy milk and sweetner because this could be fixed. Maybe this tea isn’t made to be had plain, or maybe I ruined it by leaving the bag in a few minutes too long. I really like the spice combo (perfect blend of ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, clove, and pepper). It is also vaguely nutty.

If the base was smooth, this would have been 90/100. Because the bitterness names it undrinkable and I don’t have any soy milk, it is more like a 30/100. I’m not going to rate it because I feel like I should have payed more attention to the brew time (it might be really good brewed correctly), but I would never buy a tea so finicky for myself.

Oh boy, I didn’t realize I got down to 39 teas (thirty-freaking-nine!) the other day until now. My ATR order arrived the other day so it’s back up but not by too much.

So glad I ordered a sample of this. I love chai but sometimes so many are basically the same as not as complex as I’d like, but I took a chance on this just to justify my order more. It’s pleasantly heavy on the cardamom. Like DAVIDsTEA’s Cardamom French Toast with extra added cinnamon and ginger.

I steeped this with some homo milk and added a bit of brown sugar. Delightful. Cardamom note is the most prominent, followed by the ginger, and then the cinnamon, I’d say. The base is a bold Nilgiri but it doesn’t override any of the spices. Rather than doing a 4-5 minute steep (didn’t time it), I’m sure this would really benefit from a stovetop treatment.

Would I buy more? Not entirely sure yet but it’s been the best loose leaf chai I’ve purchased in a good while. I’m biased when it comes to cardamom, however, as I love that stuff.

Sil

wow 39….soooo little.

Evol Ving Ness

Thirty-freaking-nine! Shocking.

You and I are on the same page with the cardamom. This chai is going on my list. Sounds great.

Kristal

You’re doing well! Got any goals in mind?

Fjellrev

No goals in specific! Just trying to finish up some older stuff. It’s too bad that I have quite a bit still packed up that I’d love to finish up but I’m trying to work on the DF teas, at least. Just drink up!

Cardamom is so delicious, so I’m sure you’d enjoy this one, Evol.

Sil

cardamom is the best. i have a blueberry smoothie that i make that has just a little in it with some cinnamon and turmeric. so good.

Fjellrev

That’s a great idea, Sil!

Indigobloom

Wowwwwww now that is something to aspire for! good on you :)
