When I was little, I used to see a watermelon & exclaim: Boy! Oh! Boy! It was absolutely my favorite fruit when I was little. I still love it.
This tea is all about the Boy! Oh! Boy! (Hence the name!) It starts with a blend of Nilgiri & First Flush Darjeeling & ends with freeze-dried watermelon chunks. Just tea & watermelon! But what a delicious combination!

I let this cold steep in the fridge – for over 24 hours now? It came out perfect though: chilled ripe watermelon (not candied at all though, unlike a jelly bean. It even has vegetal melon tones) on a crisp, yet malty black tea blend foundation. It’s absolutely refreshing. Too bad it’s a grey overcast day; it would’ve been perfect for sunny balm of yesterday, but the tea wasn’t ready yet!

I like this one. The base is mellow but yummy and the watermelon tastes quite authentic to me, which is unusual for a watermelon tea. There’s a nice juiciness to it but it’s not overly sweet.
However, I think I would like this better with a different base. Maybe the black tea would make more sense iced, but as a hot tea I would love to see this on an oolong or a green tea.

Wasn’t feeling a melon tea tonight but I’m getting low on my remaining 52teas options (and keep forgetting to brew up those mate blends in the morning!), so here we are. It’s pleasant enough, today, reminding me as I believe it has in the past of Butiki’s Dark Side of the Melon, where melon was accompanied by a flavourful black(?), as is the case here as well. Unusual, as most melon teas seem to be on lighter bases. It is a touch astringent though, could be brewing error, so I’m probably going to leave the rest of the cup for tomorrow.

Hi getanzt! Perhaps at some point, but at this time I’m a bit swamped with life things, and couldn’t commit to making it a good experience. If you haven’t already, try posting your interest on the discussion board? There are definitely some members on here that enjoy swapping teas and are more active than I am :)

This was so tasty, and I’m so sad to see it go! The watermelon 52Teas uses is the absolute best. So realistic and not at all like watermelon flavoring.
Lovely! The watermelon flavour is true and subtle but present. Really just right. The black base is also spot on, from start to finish. Hearty enough but not overpowering the watermelon flavour.
I don’t know if there has been a discussion on 52teas’ new (to me) packaging elsewhere. While I was quite happy with the original Kraft paper-like packaging, it is nice to be able to see the leaf in the peekaboo window. That said, after I had sealed the package, the delicate watermelon scent continued to waft out. Beginning to get a wee bit paranoid about this seeming permeability, I popped the package into a ziplock freezer bag to prevent aroma from escaping or entering.
Wondering whether others have any thoughts or experience to offer here.
The new packaging is the result of not having much choice in the matter due to the pandemic. :(
Hopefully, when I need to order again, the packaging I want and prefer will be in stock. Until then, I’m sorry about it, I had to accept what I could get.
Thanks, Anne. All good. Just an observation and I am making do. It IS nice to have a temporary change. I can’t even imagine the challenges of dealing with the current and likely future shortages and delivery blips.
It’s been unfortunate – the limitations on the supplies – I’ve really just had to make due with what I can get. I guess, in reality, it’s always that way, but before Covid – the company I order these supplies from had everything in stock – sometimes, they’d sell out of something but it would be back in stock within a couple of weeks. Since Covid hit, it would be months and months before something would be back in stock so I had to make due with what they had available.
I imagine it is like throughout the world.
Yes, there have been quite a few small businesses that I know of that have been affected in the same way, and I’m sure the small guys aren’t the only ones who have been affected this way.
Had this one earlier today and I was really impressed by it. As far as watermelon teas go, I do think it’s a milder/softer flavour but I also appreciate how that allows it to come off as so much more natural and less “candy watermelon” while equally embracing a really pleasantly smooth and well bodied black tea base. Straight forward and well executed, and definitely seems worth of a name that conveys so much excitement.
