From 52teas

We’re pushing the envelope again this week! With some bottled beverage manufacturers offering sodas made with tea, we thought we would put a different spin on it and offer a tea flavored with soda! Here’s our Cherry Vanilla Cola flavored black tea.

Proving once again that we’re not your Aunt Beatrice’s tea blender, this blend has real cherries, vanilla bean pieces and all natural cola flavor. It’s a great tea for a tea soda, so we’re posting our tea soda recipe for those of you who are interested.

The success of the coconut cream pie inspired me to try one of the other ones I bought from the forgotten 52teas order. I’m not surprised I ordered this one and it was sort of screaming to me. Here’s the thing.

I. Love. Cherry. Cola.
Favourite soda (after orange) FTW.

Unfortunately it’s not something we can usually get here. I don’t know if you can over there on the other side of the water. I know you have Dr Pepper which to me is very similar, but also not available in Denmark unless you’re really lucky. We had it for a couple of years recently, but it was taken off the market again. Apparently it didn’t sell well enough. (I fear Mountain Dew has gone the same tragic way, because I can’t find that anymore either). Recently we’ve had a limited edition cherry cola from coca-cola which was yummy, but alas, that one seems to also have run its course. In my deprivation of proper cherry cola or similar beverage, I’ve found that I can make a relatively good substitute with ordinary cola and cherry cordial. It’s not the same, but it works okay.

What all this means is that I have VERY high expectations of this one. So high, that I’m likely to be disappointed. Anything below a clean 100 on this is not good enough. The question just is exactly how disappointed am I going to get?

The leaves actually do smell a bit like cola and something that I’m willing to call cherry-like. There is however also a note which to my own surprise I can only describe as vaguely menthol-like. This is worrysome.

After steeping, the tea has pretty much the same smell, only hot. The mentholness is sticking out a bit more here, which is a little odd to me because menthol (along with mints) is usually a cool sort of flavour.

Hmm… Flat cola with dusty vanilla. I can’t find any cherry outside of the smell. Something sour-ish, kind of citrus-soapy-like. So, yes, I did get disappointed. It’s just a question of how much.

This does require an amount of experimentation, but for a first experience, I cannot in good consciousness give it more than 65-ish.

fcmonroe

Too bad it didn’t satisfy that your cherry cola needs!! Have you ever tried Cheerwine? It’s a North Caroline (or a South Caroline) brand. You would probably like it as well.

And we have a cherry flavored Dr. Pepper sometimes. It’s really good too.

Angrboda

No, I’ve never heard about that before. Is it a wine? We have this cherry dessert wine here, which I don’t much like. I find dessert wines way too sweet.
Over here it seems like traditional cola, orange and sprite-like sodas are doing best. Other types of flavours are usually made by danish brands. I don’t know, maybe we’re just too set in our ways to try new types of soda when they become available.

Peggie Bennett

This almost makes me want to ship some soda out to you. :-)

Angrboda

Awwww, that’s sweet Peggie. :) It’d probably be shaken flat by the time I got it though.

Ricky

Dr.Pepper is sooooo different from Cheery Coke. Maybe they make it different in Denmark. But Cherry Coke is pretty common here in the States. All soda is actually.

Angrboda

Yes, I know it’s a different flavour, but for me it’s sort of pointing in the same general direction with the fruityness. A lot of it, for me, is probably also the similarity in colour.
I want your soda selection. :( The danes are too set in their ways.

Ricky

Ahhh, I wouldn’t know. I don’t like Dr. Pepper =P. I stay away from that and Cherry Coke. If I have to drink soda, it’s coke, ginger ale or ice tea.

Angrboda

I’ve seen ginger ale around here, but only in these specialty bottles and really expensive. They seem to put them nearer to ciders than to sodas. I’m not very fond of ginger, so I haven’t tried them. I tend to go for cola or orange soda myself, even if the orange flavour tends to be rather artificial. I can handle a low quality orange soda much much better than a low quality cola. (Given Coca-cola and Pepsi, though, I can’t tell the difference. I can’t even tell if it’s light or regular). Other than that, I drink a lot of carbonated water, but I don’t really count that as a soda due to it not being sweetened.

Ricky

You have to come down to the States one day. Soda tastes different ;)

I can’t really tell the difference between coke, pepsi and sprite, 7up. Some people hate one and love the other. Neh, they’re all the same to me. Orange soda isn’t bad. I haven’t had one of those in the longest time. Ummm, maybe next time.

Angrboda

I’m glad I’m not the only one who can’t. I always get all O.o when people say things like ‘I love Coke, but I hate Pepsi’ because they taste exactly the same to me. For the longest time I thought it was more a question of brand preference rather than taste preference, but then I saw a guy on tv doing test on tv with several kinds of cola. He was blindfolded but he got all of them right. It was amazing.

Ricky

I think it’s just that some people prefer one over the other. I mean there are difference, but I really don’t care enough for them. To me it’s the same soda.

Angrboda

For most, yeah, I think it’s brand preference. I’m guilty of it myself, but I can’t tell you why. I have NO clue why I gravitate towards one rather than the other. I just do. I do it with milk too. I prefer organic milk, but if I can’t get the one with the drawing of the cow with flowers around it, then I’ll pick an ordinary non-organic milk over a different brand of organic. Even though they all taste the same. I just like that drawing.

Cofftea

Angrboda, maybe steep it highly concentrated, chill, and then add carbonated water?

Angrboda

Cofftea, yeah I’ve considered that as one of the ways I need to experiment with it. It’s just a shame that I can’t boil carbonated water and have it stay carbonated.

Fcmonroe, I think you’re right, I think I’d like that a lot too.

.snowglobe angel.

I feel your pain. I relocated from the US to UK a few years back and the only lament of culture change is the loss of my fav things (i.e. rootbeer and celestial seasonings tea). Anyway, you know if it was kosher I wouldn’t have a problem sending you cherry coke/dr.pepper/(mt. dew is around but not so much where I live now). Anyway, just thought I’d put it out there, since a girl on another forum was like my magical lifesaver and sent me the teas I was pining for. :)

Angrboda

Yeah, Peggie Bennett said that too, but it would probably go flat before I got it. :)
CS has come to danish stores in recent years. A pretty limited selection though, just a handful of kinds. We don’t even have a very large Twinings selection here. There might be hope for you yet. :) I take comfort in the fact that you lot don’t have my little local shop (Luka Te) and that AC Perch’s in Copenhagen charge heart’s blood to ship abroad. So I do have some advantages. :)

Shanti

Mmm, cherry coke sounds SO good right now…and orange soda…and Dr. Pepper…laments giving up soda

Angrboda

Shanti, come over to the dark side. You know you want to. :p

Mac

Wait, people can’t taste the difference between Coke and Pepsi? Srsly? o_O

Angrboda

Yes, srsly. :)
Or, should I say, wait, people can taste the difference between coke and pepsi? O.o

Auggy

Hehe – I actually like Pepsi more… to me it is sweeter. Though I usually just drink diet sodas (or at least I used to) so maybe the difference is more obvious in the no-cal versions.

Cofftea

The only 2 sodas I like are Jones green apple and the old coke blak… I was SO P!$$&&D when they discontinued it! Oh 52 teas…. LOL! Seriously though. I’d love a coffee coke flavored tea!

Peggie Bennett

I don’t drink soda at all, except for the occasional Limonata, and that’s even very rare. But what about those Italian sodas? We have those here, you can probably buy the flavored syrups online, then mix it with your soda water.

Shanti

Mmm, Italian soda…I would love to drink those, but regular soda water is also pretty bad for your teeth (acidity).

Jillian

Hmm, you know I can’t remember the last time I had pop (soda to you guys, I guess). I pretty much swore it off a couple of years ago and honestly I haven’t missed it. I never drank much of it as a kid, my mother being big on healthier drinks like fruit juice and milk. /random post is random

Mac

But they taste completely different… mind is blown

Peggie Bennett

You don’t think you could get a syrup/fizz ratio the right way to make taste like a soda? Or is there a way to buy soda syrup, like the stuff that comes out of the soda fountains? Maybe not name brand, but it could come close.

Cofftea

I agree Jillian. I just don’t like carbonation. Both coke blak and jones soda seem to be quite light in carbonation.

Cherry Vanilla Cola tea soda! This is too good, it’s too bad I don’t have much of this left. I steeped a teaspoon of leaves in my gaiwan because all my measuring cups were being washed, lol and I figured it was the closest I had to 2-3oz. Steeped it for 3 minutes, poured it in a cup, paid no attention to the amount of agave going in, added ice and topped it off with seltzer water.

I have some Coke Zero in my fridge because I’ve been mixing it with a little orange juice (this is actually amazing, thanks Germany), and that soda has nothing on this tea with some carbonation. It tastes like soda, but it’s still got that black tea flavor to it.

I tried adding club soda to it before but it really needs to have a concentrated steep for it to really, really work. I can’t believe it took me until now to do this.

Alphakitty

Another 52tea blend I’ve never heard of that sounds amazing! I wonder how long it would take to try all of their teas.

This tea became mine in a swap with silvermage2000. I was curious about this one after reading others tasting notes, but it wasn’t available any longer. I’m so happy to get to sample some…well, more than some, almost a near full pouch!

The dry leaves of this tea smell just like cola. They even have an effervescent scent to them, I don’t know how tea can posess this, let alone the leaves, but it is so cool!

I brewed this for 3:30 mintutes at boiling. I think this may have been a tad long, or maybe I just need a little sweetner, because it is quite potent. There is something in the flavor of this tea that makes it tingle on my tongue. It really does have many similarities to cherry vanilla cola. I taste a sarsaparilla note in the tea, maybe that is part of the natural cola flavoring? Something reminds me of the sarsaparilla flavoring in the Root Beer Float tea that was made not too long ago. Yum!

This tea is great, I can’t wait to try it iced!

amandajo

Mmm…the sasparilla remark makes me want to try it! This site has made my tea addiction so much worse! (Not that that’s really a bad thing!) :)

Cofftea

Ditto amandajo! ahem… all their matcha’s and Mayan Chocolate Chai by the pound… lol.

amandajo

lol…Actually, I was talking about steepster! I was already addicted to 52teas before this (zoomdweebie’s tea bar is in my home town). :)

Cofftea

Oh yeah duh that’s right. I think you’re the only steepsterite here from the area (or at least that I’ve seen) so I forgot you’re one of the lucky ones. :)

amandajo

yep…and the fudge brownie tea is quite awesome by the way…

Cofftea

The only question I have is, is it FUDGE! vs just CHOCOLATE!?

amandajo

oh it’s fudgy…definitely not just chocolate :)

Cofftea

amandajo, you are NOT helping lol.

Jaime

This sounds so, so good. So does the fudge brownie. All their teas, really.

amandajo, I’m so jealous that you get to go to zoomdweebie’s. I hope I get to go there someday.

LiberTEAS

Jaime – I don’t know that I would want to go to zoomdweebies, because I know if I go I will end up buying way too much tea. It’s bad enough that I’m pretty much buying every single tea of the week that they put out (there are a couple of teas that Frank has created that I’ve been able to resist, but not many). I’d probably end up buying the place if I went there. And that can’t happen. My pocketbook (and hubby) say NO.

Meghann M

Oooh, fudge tea that tastes like fudge and not just chocolate? I know I’m late to the party of comments, but that sounds amazing:)

I understand about the site making the tea addiction worse. I only had a few teas before here, now I have an overflowing tea cupboard and an emptying wallet:) But I’m very happy and my hubby is enjoying the tea with me too.

Jaime

I would end up buying too much tea there, too. And, yes, Meghann, this site has made the addiction worse. Partially because I get to see so many more teas/brands I was exposed to, but mainly because I now know I’m not the only one who is obsessed with tea and all its manifestations, and I’m justified in my addiction.

Meghann M

Oooh, thanks for a new tea site amandajo. I love better than sex cake/bars, think I’ll have to look that one up!

Meghann M

PS-wild woman sounds great too, I love teas with black currants!

Jaime

Yeah, I’ll be caving on the Better than Sex tea…and probably on the Duchess’s First Love, too. And maybe the Persian Rose…

Thank goodness tea isn’t illegal.

amandajo

lol… there is a sampler pack for 60 bucks that I have been contemplating :P…caffeinated or uncaffeinated…they both sound so good…

amandajo

oops…realized that it should have been www.taytea.com but looks like you guys figured that out :P

Meghann M

I didn’t see the sampler pack…might need some new teas to test out the breveille…new teapot/tea maker means I should splurge a little on teas too.

I love the names of the teas, they are great. Does it say anywhere how many ounces of tea are in each tea tin at tay tea?

amandajo

Yeah, in that second paragraph at the top of the screen in the shop online section it says that the tins are 4 oz each. The sampler contains 2oz tins (8 different kinds).

Meghann M

Cool thanks!

Thanks to momo for this tea! it’s your box of samples I’m trying to make progress on at the moment – poked through the box last night and discovered like 15 teas I hadn’t tried! Most of them ones that I had specifically requested, too!

I don’t recall what the dry tea smelled like, but brewed up, there’s a definite and distinct cola aroma. Not coke or pepsi, just generic cola. Doesn’t smell too bad; I think I’m still a bit scarred from DavidsTea’s Cherry Cola, which is why I’m feeling apprehensive about trying this one.

However, I’m glad I did! This is actually really tasty! It’s by far the most authentically cola-flavoured tea I’ve had (ok, maybe that’s not exactly a category in which I’ve tried any/many other teas, but the flavour is very believable in this blend). I can’t say that I’m really getting the cherry.. it actually almost tastes a little more like Vanilla Coke to me. That said, I’m not a pop person at all, and it’s entirely possibly that I haven’t even ever tried Cherry Coke (I think I might have once, back in grade school, actually). It’s not even that I don’t like the flavour of pop though, I just dislike carbonation for whatever reason. So I’m the type that likes flat pop, yep! (And another reason I hate beer… not only is the taste bad, but it’s carbonated!)

Anyhow, I’m really enjoying this tea! I kept the infusion time quite low in case the base felt like getting bitter on me, and it worked like a charm. Zero bitter. Perhaps I should drop all 52teas blacks to 2:15 from 2:30.

So yes. Thanks to momo again for letting me try this, and a bazillion other teas which I’ve sucked at getting around to trying!

I love pop flavoured things. But for some reason I have a hard time drinking carbonation, it just doesn’t go down my esophagus well. So I often do not choose to drink pop, or I will “press” it by adding water.

This dry tea smells exactly like those sour cola gummy candies. Mmmm. I bought this to make iced or cold, but I wanted to try it hot as well. Without sweetener it tasted quite flat. Not flat as in flat carbonation, but the taste was flat – if that makes sense. I added some rock sugar and that made the taste more dynamic. You can taste cola, sour cherry, and slight vanilla. It does have a taste of flat soda. To me it doesn’t taste like there is even much black tea in it. There were also full sized cherries mixed in with the tea, which is a bonus.

As I find with most 52 teas blends, the taste becomes stronger and more distinct as it cools.

Look forward to making this one iced.

Another tea I ganked from the Travelling Teabox. I’m always up for something new and different so I was eager to try what I consider to be one of Frank’s odder teas flavours (not counting the Tuna Melt, lol).

The tea smells like cola – it’s more like a Dr. Pepper scent than a Coco-Cola scent IMO, but it’s surprisingly authentic. Unfortunately the taste…really isn’t. It might just be the age of the sample but mostly what I’m getting is the (rather bitter) black tea base interspersed with a bit of faint, sweetish cola flavour and maybe a hint of vanilla. This tea tastes like it needs milk, but I don’t think the flavourings would be agreeable to that – maybe some agave nectar?

I’ve got enough for one or two more cups so I’ll mess around with it a bit and see if I can’t get it to taste better.

ANGRBODA very kindly sent me a generous portion of this tea. I had not had any since it was first released and I like it more than most people here do. The cherry taste is a bit muted, I agree. But there’s something about the “cola” taste that I love. Indeed, I’ve been known to wear cola fragrance: L’Aromarine Cola Eau de Toilette is the best inexpensive scent I have. This tea tastes like the liquid scent.

There are a bunch of complex notes vying for attention here, I think, which is why it might not seem utterly successful as a cherry tea or as a vanilla tea or as a cola tea, but I like the mix very much.

I brewed this tea up and allowed it to take a chill in the fridge – it makes a really good iced tea! Even my hubby (the non-tea-drinker) likes it! I did add some sweetener to it just to keep the flavors perky, but I don’t think that it’s overpoweringly sweet at all. Just very pleasantly sweet, and very tasty.

The aroma is one of the most remarkable aspects of this tea, it really SMELLS just like one of those old time soda fountain colas. The cherry flavor is strong, the vanilla flavor softens it nicely… and the tea flavor is neither overwhelmed by the flavors, nor does it overwhelm them.

It’s weird… but it works.

I am going to rate this one this time, because I have roughly about a half a gallon left of this tea, and I don’t know that it will last… and I want to rate it before I’m out of it.

Sipdown! Used the last of my bag of this as a cold brew. Today is my first day back at work this week after being in the Processfix workshop since Tuesday. I think I have about a thousand emails. And three days of interview paperwork to deal with. I’m counting myself lucky that I don’t have a headache already. At least I have this to sip on to cheer me up (and I’m meeting a friend for lunch in a few minutes).

Strangely, this time I’m getting more flavour than I did previously, even though I didn’t use anywhere near as much leaf. I wouldn’t say I got vanilla or cherry, per se, but definitely cola. It’s a nice enough cup to sip on throughout the day, but it’s probably not something I’d ever restock. I like the idea of it, but the flavour just didn’t live up to my expectations. It’s tastes better hot, but I prefer to drink this cold. There’s a confusion opinion for you! AT least it’s Friday.
