From 52teas

I was pretty excited when people asked that this tea be included in the vote for the 2016 12 Teas of Christmas, and even happier when this tea turned out to be one of the top vote getters. This has been one of the more memorable 52Teas blends for me – I love coconut! – so I was really happy to have the opportunity to reblend it.

The original description of this tea said:

Our Coconut Cream Pie flavored black tea has been one of our bestsellers here at Zoomdweebie’s since we opened. In addition to the pouches of this tea that we’ve sold, we sell a LOT of beverages made from this tea, in particular, this is probably our all time bestselling iced tea latte, one sip of which has led people to exclaim, “That’s like coconut cream pie in a glass!” I’ve also been frequently challenged on our assertion that our tea lattes are all fat-free, particularly with this tea.

It is simply so decadent, so wonderfully sweet and satisfying, that people cannot believe that we didn’t just liquefy a slice of coconut cream pie and serve it to them in a glass.

For the 52teas version of this tea, we are adding some honking-big flakes of unsweetened coconut to our premium black tea blend along with coconut and vanilla flavors.

So, obviously, I needed to change up the recipe somewhat because the black tea that I use is different from the ones utilized by Frank. I started with my black tea base of organic Indian and Chinese teas. I did use some “honking-big flakes of unsweetened coconut” as well as some vanilla beans and calendula petals.

This is very coconut-y, very creamy and oh-so-yummy! It’s been a while since I’ve had some of Frank’s version of this tea, but I’d say that I did pretty well with this blend! If my review of this tea is any indication – I think my black tea might be a bit stronger than the original version – but the other flavors are on point!

organic ingredients: black teas, coconut, calendula petals, vanilla beans and natural flavors.

Additional notes: Rachel sold a WHOLE tin of this unopened with her sale. It makes 40-50 cups! Whoa! thank you! I already knew I loved it from a previous sample. It’s one of my favorites from 52. This cup didn’t disappoint. Plenty of big flakes of coconut on a nice black tea base. I wish it had more “pie” aspects to it, but oh well. This is my favorite coconut blend from 52 as well, since the coconut here is the smoothest and sweetest.

Thanks to Amanda for this sample!

This smells delicous. I love coconut

This tea is nice and smooth coconut with some vanilla cream shining through. The black base is there, but not overpowering. I am not really getting any pie crust taste, but that is ok, because the filling is so great!

I would definitely re-buy this. Oh man, how did I get hooked to 52teas so easily??!

Wow, this really is as good as they say it is! Jillian, thanks for sparing me some. It is soooooo good. I definitely have to get some of this soon. I like it plain and I really like it with sugar and a spash of cream. It really does taste like a creamy coconut pie. This was the best dessert tea!

Meghann M

I think my next cup will be this blended with either chocolate cheesecake chai or chai with chocolate. The creamy sweetness could really make them perfect chais.

Hmmmm…. Coconut Cream Pie Chai…

Frank, something tells me Cofftea may enjoy that combo. :-) Me too maybe :-)

Coconut Cream Pie Chai…Mmmm! The name rolls nicely off the tongue.

Finished off the last of my sample of this from Ricky (thank you!!) and I must say it was very good, probably one of the best from 52teas (that I have tried, at least).

The dried tea itself is what appears to be the typical black tea base with small and large flakes of coconut. The coconut smell coming out of this tea is fantastic, it smells like sweetened coconut milk, creamy, coconut-y and delicious. I brewed the tea a few different ways, and none of them were bad, they just varied.

The first way was hot, five minutes, no additives. When the hot water first hit the tea, the coconut fragrance liberated, as it infused, the tea aroma took over the coconut. Unfortunately, this actually smelled a little too astringent and strongly of black tea, that I was afraid I would hate it. That being said, I added some milk. The milk mellowed the punch from the black tea, and made an actual coconut cream flavor. It legitimately tasted like coconut milk, which one would associate with coconut cream pie. Very, very good.

As the pot cooled (because I do not have a cozy and sometimes take entirely too long in between cups) I noticed that the astringency went away. So this time, I enjoyed the cup with no additives. I have to say that it was not that strongly of black tea, there is still a creamy almost vanilla flavor incorporated with the coconut and black tea that does make this creamy without any cream. Fears vanquished, still very good.

The final way, and how I finished my sampling today, was hot, five minute infusion, a pinch of rock sugar and some milk. The sugar made it sweet, very sweet, almost heavy with sweetness, but not unenjoyable, kind of like ice cream, or dare I say it, coconut cream pie. The milk cuts the astringency again and helps to meld all of the flavors, the vanilla creaminess, the coconut flavor, the sweetness from the sugar and of course the black tea flavor into one very delicious cuppa.

Overall, very good tea, highly recommended that if you like coconuts and you like tea, you will probably like this tea. Enjoy!

I’m starting to become tempted by this tea and your tealog did not help. =)

Cinoi

Sorry! It was well worth it though, I am definitely going to have to buy a pouch with my next 52 teas order…

A big thank you to Ricky, for sending me some of this tea!

I used to hate coconut, but ever since trying Golden Moon’s Coconut Pouchong I’ve been feeling braver about it. So, of course the first tea I picked out of Ricky’s lovely package is this one. I usually prepare teas I’m tasting for the first time without additives like milk and sugar, and at the recommended steeping parameters. Instead, I made this with milk and sweetener, as multiple people mentioned how it tasted better as a latte.

The dry tea has a very light smell, at least compared to the Coconut Pouchong. Steeped up, it’s delicious. Creamy, and just slightly coconutty—but that’s fine with me. Unfortunately, I only had Splenda in my apartment, so it’s giving the tea a kind of funky taste (I can’t stand Splenda anymore, for some reason!) but otherwise, this is a lovely dessert tea. It’s very basic, but I like basic. I’m pretty sure once I make room in my tea chest for more, I’ll be ordering a package of this for myself.

Stephanie: me too… I think… since Frank tells us (teasingly even) that next week’s tea is too good to pass up, I shall order this one when I place my order for his new tea next week…

LiberTEAS

That wasn’t very nice Stephanie, now it looks like I’m talking to my invisible friend named Stephanie that nobody else can see or hear…

Shanti

Haha! Don’t worry, I know that Stephanie was here at some point…

Ricky

Sally, what? You heard Frank was going to announce white chocolate matcha!?!? Stop lying!

Julie, hey, shush you!

Joshua, who are you? Stop talking to me.

I’m not crazy!

Shantea, glad you liked it! Shantea’s a real person… it’s not my imaginary friend… shantea? where are you! ahhhh!!

Cinoi

white chocolate matcha….I am definitely buying this with my next 52teas order, it was fantastic!

Sipdown!! (221)

So this has been hanging out in my sipdown box for a little while and since 222 is not as nice a number as 220 I decided that by the end of the night I would have at least two sipdowns starting with this.

I dropped the rating on this one because tbh, it tastes like most of the other 52 tea blacks. There is maybe a hint of coconut but mostly it is black tea base. It won’t be missed now that it is gone.

Woke up and decided to deal with being 10min late to work so I could make this in the AM before my drive. Then thought I’d make it into a latte (as per 52teas recipe) thinking that the only thing better than eating your dessert before dinner is eating dessert first thing in the morning before any meals have been had. What’s even better is that although my tire blew out on the interstate when my gas tank was on E and I had to wait an hour and a half to get my tire changed with my car off for fear of running out of gas and then really looking like an idiot (and hey, it’s freezing rain outside – no I’m not going out to change it myself), I got to sit and smugly wait in my car, sipping my dessert before I even had breakfast. I highly recommend it. :)

OMG! What a day! Glad the tea made it not so horrible (and may it only get better)!

Cofftea

I’m pretty much out of Mayan Chocolate Chai, but when I get more I’m gonna have to make a latte using their recipe. I’ve never used condenced milk for that before…

Laura

@Auggy: Oh thank you! It wasn’t so bad anyway, and things are looking up! :D
@Cofftea: Yeah, it’s super sweet – muuuch sweeter than I ever like my espresso lattes – but since i use it as a “dessert”, I don’t mind. :) And I myself have a sample of Mayan Choc. Chai somewhere in my stash. I’ll have to try that as a latte as well!

Cofftea

I think certain teas (like this one) might be too sweet that way, but I think the spice and chocolate would cut it nicely. Although I could see this frozen and blended!

takgoti

Well, there’s a way to kick off the day. [I wouldn’t change my tire in the freeze either!] Happy to hear your day’s improving!

I am glad I am sitting at home with a hot cup of tea. I had a very productive day that was as tiring as it was productive. I am happy to be unwinding and digesting everything that happened. Today I received my order from 52teas that made me smile quite a bit. Then a bit after that I received an e-mail from a friend of mine who has a 1 year old son asking me to be his godmother at his baptism! I was honored and very happy to be asked. While not very religious and not particularly fond of kinds, I do really love this kid. So, I had multiple reasons to continue smiling throughout my busy day.

Now I am unwinding with a cup of this tea, which dry smells like what I would imagine clouds would smell like if they were made out of coconut. You can smell the cream and the coconut perfectly. I actually had to sigh when I first sniffed it. It has large coconut bits in it that make it beautiful to look at.

Once steeped, the dark brew still smells distinctively of coconut and cream, though a little bit more subdued than the dry tea. Unsweetened it was a little bit too astringent for my taste, but it was still delightfully creamy. Sweetened the coconut flavor really stood out and the astringency was covered up nicely. I made a second cup and added my homemade latte mix to it. Yum… it was like a creamy coconut milkshake! It reminded me of a coconut cream cake y Mom made me as a little girl. Wow… A guilty pleasure tea. Perfect to relax after a tiring but great day. : )

Holy crap!! This tea is EXCELLENT! I guess I wasn’t expecting much from a coconut tea, but this is truly incredible! It tastes strongly of coconut and vanilla, as described. But the black tea base lends a chocolaty flavor too. Yum! I especially recommend adding some sweetener. Wow!! Pie indeed!

Too bad it doesn’t hold up to a second infusion very well. But the first cup is well worth buying a package anyway! Thanks sooooo much to Kittenna for giving me a sample. I’ve only wanted to try this for over a year. :)

Great tea of the day! I am LOVING the 12 Teas of Christmas sampler! I had ordered a pouch of this before and really like it but I am glad it is in the sampler because I had sent one as a gift! Everyday the recipient of my gift and I are discussing the “tea of the day” and it is a ball!!!! (Even though it has been a week and I still have a horribly sore throat and cough) This is there first experience with 52 Teas and they are loving it! Today I think this tea sealed the deal! They want to order more :) Woohoo… anxious for tomorrow!

LiberTEAS

The sampler IS so much fun. I hope Frank is already plotting and planning a package for next year. :)

Jaime

Yes, I need one of these for every Christmas!

Kristen

I am thinking more like The 12 teas of Love for Valentines :) The thought of waiting until next Christmas is dreadful!!! (And Valentine’s is my birthday LOL)

Jaime

14 teas!! Yes, I love this idea. It’ll give us singles a reason to be slightly less bitter during the month of February!

Kristen

YES Jaime this could consist of 14 instead of 12 LOVE it… I think we are onto something!

Kristen

Now HOPEFULLY Frank will read this ;)

Jaime

Mention crying. Frank usually responds if I say I’m about to start crying.

Southern Boy Teas

ROFL!

Sounds like a great idea, except I think we would wind up with a lot of the same teas. By next Christmas we should have some NEW favorites.

Southern Boy Teas

I am really ecstatic to hear that you are all enjoying the sampler.
