From 52teas

This was a suggestion from one of our customers, and I spent an hour digging through my email folders and searching our facebook page, but I couldn’t find the original suggestion anywhere, so I couldn’t put his or her name on the blend.

Anyway, when I first got the suggestion, I realized I was going to have to MAKE some Zabaglione to try, because not only had I not tried it before, but I had never HEARD of it before. Well after trying it (for those of you who never have, I would say it is something like a custardy (flavor, not texture) whipped cream with a hint of wine. After trying it, I was not at all sure that we would be able to make a tea that hinted of the complexity of Zabaglione, but after some trial and error, we now have…

Seriously, I realize that I’m a big fan of Frank’s teas, but this one…wow. Just wow. I’d give it a 100+ if there was a button to do that.

OMG GUYS

DO YOU KNOW WHAT THIS TASTES LIKE?

LIKE THOSE ICE CREAM BARS.
(You know the strawberry shortcake ones? with the layers? and the like, delicious crackly bits on the outside?)

ANYWAY IT IS AMAZING.

Southern Boy Teas

LOL. I love it when our teas cause people to WRITE IN ALL CAPS! :) Glad you are enjoying it!

Meghann M

Oooh…I hadn’t thought of that comparison but it totally does taste like that! YUM!

52teas has been on a roll lately. They’ve been producing blends that are all appealing to me, and when I try them, the wonderful descriptions turn out to be true! It seems like I spend a lot of time kissing Frank’s you-know-what on here, but it is sincere.

The package was full of bright red gorgeous strawberry hunks. I can smell this cup of tea sitting next to me on the table, that’s how strong the aroma is. The aroma is more sweet and creamy than tart and berry-like.

This is really good. It’s creamy in the wonderful way that coats your entire mouth. That sensation is complemented quite nicely by the strawberries, which I imagine would be even stronger if I had added sweetener to this cup. The strawberry taste lingers on your tongue. Another fantastic 52teas blend!

So, I’ve had this one a couple of times now and I’m pretty sure I haven’t reviewed it yet. And that lack of a review is mostly because I was having a really hard time figuring out how I feel about this tea.

If you even whisper ‘oversteep’ at it, it cackles and becomes unpleasantly bitter. So that was a little trial and error (3 minutes too long, 2 minutes too short). And boiling like I normally would left me with a cup of, well, tea without any strawberry or cream.

So today I went at it with 190F water for 2 min 45 seconds, added 1 oz of milk and a half teaspoon or so of sugar and BY JOVE I GOT IT.

I had a really nice cup of strawberries and cream tea with just a subtle hint of sugared alcohol. This is insanely good once I eventually got there.

Thanks momo!

Hmm I ordered this one too, so I’ll have to be really careful.

I just got my sample of this yesterday, so I’ll try your time! (The temp I’ll have to guess at though!)

I tried Strawberry Zabaglione last night and it made for a fantastic dessert! I’m so pissed at myself for not buying this one when it was still available from 52teas. The strawberry is very natural tasting and the black tea doesn’t overpower in this blend. A little coconut cream and raw sugar made this tea sing! My husband drank 3/4 of my cup when I wasn’t looking because it’s steal from your family good.

A big thank you (((hug))) to Ashley for sharing this fantastico tea with me :)

Daisy Chubb

It’s in the permanent collection now (aka in stock I guess haha)! You should add some to your next order ^^

Cattibrie

This is the only one from my order I haven’t tried yet. Maybe tomorrow.

Ashley Bain

So glad you guys enjoyed it! This is one of my favorites. And yep, it’s in the permanent collection, fortunately, so it’s always available!
And you’re totally right about the coconut cream & sugar. It just makes it. I was going to suggest you added some but I’d forgot!

This is a sample from Sandy by way of Azzrian. Thanks guys!

I don’t have many fruity teas but this is one really good strawberry tea. I taste strawberries and cream and/or custard. The flavoring is done well with out being too heavy and fake feeling. I think the base plays nice, seems to be a brisk but not sharp or bitter. A very nice cup.

This is a good tea…is it as great as I wish it was? Not quite. I think my expectations were simply too high. Had I never tried Strawberry pie honeybush I might love it. Don’t get me wrong, I do like it, but its just not love. I’ve tried brewing it a few different ways now, just under boiling, at boiling, for 4 minutes, then for 3 minutes. But it still keeps coming out just short of wondrous. It’s a little too astringent for my taste, and it is overshadowing the strawberries and cream. I am sorry Strawberry Z, I guess it just was not meant to be. We can still be friends. ;)

Meghann M

Oooh…this makes me want the Strawberry Pie honeybush even more! Also, I had to steep the Zabaglione around 2-2:30 for it to lower the astringency. It still got a ton of strawberry ripeness to it at that time.

amandajo

Followed your suggestion Miss Meghann, thank you!

I got this as a sample in my box of teas from LiberTeas on teatra.de and am finally getting to it. In my ongoing effort to manage my stash, the beau and I have been drinking a lot of teas that we only have a small amount of (or don’t really like) to try to cull the numbers a bit. There was just enough in this sample for a good sized pot, so we went for it.

Steeped in boiling water for 2.5 – 3 minutes, this yields a deep brown liquor with a honeyed black tea aroma. It smells sweet and appealing, though not of strawberries. First sips are a nice sweet black tea with a hint of fruity something behind it. Almost like a jam flavour, and it is a thicker mouthfeel. The black tea is nice and unassuming, not too brisk, bold or malty. Frequently I have an issue with 52Teas black tea base, but this works, so far.

I have never had zabaglione, but am loving the jamminess I get while this tea is hot. Having just googled zabaglione I don’t really know why I am getting jam flavours, but that’s okay. I can tell already that this is a tea to enjoy hot because as it cools the typical bitterness I experience in 52Teas black teas is coming forward (which I hate!) All in all, this is lovely while hot but the bitterness just isn’t my friend. I am considering sweetening this to mask the bitterness, but I don’t like making additions to my tea. Ah well, it was nice to try!

EDIT: Added a bit of milk about halfway through the cup to cut the bitterness. With milk, it’s a bit more bearable in terms of bitterness, but it also masks the hint of strawberry I was getting. Now it tastes almost as if I have a generic orange pekoe tea with some milk thrown in, and a bit of something sweet/fruity. Disappointing.

Today my shipments from 52teas, Tropical Tea Co., AND Amanda came in. I wasn’t expecting them all at the same time! I was a bit overwhelmed. However, the smell of this one really drew me in. It’s very sweet in the bag, almost too sweet. I tried this first at about 3 minutes and 30 seconds. Very bitter! So I tried again with 2 minutes this time. It’s a bit too weak, though the flavor comes out a bit more as it cools. Somewhere between these two times will be the perfect steeping time. I will find it! This tea smells so delicious, I want to find that in the flavor as well.

I spilled some of this tea on my laptop and now the right click button isn’t working :(

Azzrian

:( oh no! Well I love this one iced personally.

Emilie

I think my laptop just needs to dry for a bit.
I’ll definitely have to try that! Especially with the Texas 100 degree summer looming in front of me!

LiberTEAS

Try steeping it at a lower temperature. I find that the black tea from 52Teas works better with a temperature of about 200°F for 2 1/2 to 3 minutes.

Emilie

Ok! I’d been having trouble with the Pancake Breakfast as well. I’m just so used to black teas being happy with around boiling temperature water.

I received this from Azzrian as a thank you from our iced tea swap. Too kind.
The dry notes smells lightly and sweetly of strawberry and keeps this as it steeps.
It tastes creamy and slightly sweet I’m guessing from the strawberries although I can’t really taste them. oh wait… it has cooled and I’m getting a tart taste hmmm maybe bitter (I of course forgot about it steeping because I was too busy digging through my new tea package).
I am enjoying this tea even without the strawberry flavour.
Two cups of black tea this morning I think I am going to be one wired girl this afternoon.

azzrian how much come in the southern boy teas ?

Azzrian

I believe enough to make 2 quarts but you can resteep them so a total of 4 quarts maybe more if you find you can re-steep again.
