I think this tea was, surprisingly, the best one of the day…

I had it in the timolino with some milk, and I think part of what made it so good was the fact I underleafed and understeeped (plus the milk). It was light and creamy with a still apparent black base and a light “tang” in the aftertaste that must have been the cheesecake flavour finally coming out!

It was nice!

Work was good today; The Witch Carel, my manager, went home early and the night progressed very smoothly. We even finished closing paperwork/coin counts 15 minutes early! Tomorrow will hopefully be good too; Carel isn’t working but I’m doing a nine and a half hour shift (open to close), and our District Manager might be coming in for an evaluation of the store.

Cross your fingers for me!

Nightshifter

I have just a little bit left of this- I need to try it this way!

Got home from work and immediately did the dishes; as a “thank you” Tre made me eggs! I love over easy eggs but can’t cook eggs to save my life so it’s a real treat when he makes them for me. Honestly, it reminds me of my mom: whenever I came home from work in Regina just exhausted or was having a bad day she’d make me a giant plate of eggs.

While he was cooking I made us tea: he picked out of the tins scattered on the table. I actually thought this had been put away, but I guess not. Oh well; I wasn’t opposed to drinking it in the slightest. His cup had added sugar and mine had added milk.

Mmmm! Just splendidly creamy and delicious.

One of my faves for sure!

Cold brewed for around 14ish hours?

When this was still ice cold I thought it was really nice: lightly fruity with cream and a touch of cilantro. However, as it warmed up throughout the work day it got increasingly cilantro central and it just because way too much herb. When I got home tonight I tossed the rest of it.

I think I’ll stick to the hot version of this one.

Bitter almond indeed.

I was oddly craving this so I set out to make it in a timolino for work: because this gets bitter quickly I was going to only do a steep of two minutes, but I was poorly multitasking by getting dressed, doing my make-up, and watching Big Brother while it steeped and time got away from me. Really got away from me.

This steeped for at least twelve minutes. Likely a lot longer. I packed it up anyway for work hoping that it’d somehow be salvageable, but it wasn’t. Ick, nope, and more nope. There was nothing but astringency and bitterness.

Sipdown (165/169)!

Woke up at the crack of dawn this morning.

Ok, not really. I woke up at nine: but that was a full two and a half hours earlier than I was expecting to wake up/the alarm was set for – and I felt surprisingly well rested despite going to bed at like 4 AM. Anyway, it gave me extra tea drinking time so I finished this one up in some cold milk while catching up on the new Whose Line episodes.

“What can you say about your house, but not your girlfriend?”

Mmm! The coffee/chocolate was pretty well balanced today and everything whisked up well. I think I’ll miss it, actually. Definitely considering whether I’d want to add it into an order…

TeaLady441

There’s new Whose Line episodes? Really? :O

TeaLady441

I wish they were on Netflix… SO BAD.

Backlog from last night. I didn’t get around to writing about it because I had just finished rewatching The Host, and that subsequently launched me into an obsessive binge of rereading all my favourite chapters, looking up lots and lots of O’Wanda (IanxWanda) fanfiction oneshots, continuing stories, and crack fics. Sorrynotsorry, and just emotionaly obsessing about IanxWanda – which is an OTP of mine.

Only fandom people will understand.

I may think Stephanie Meyers is a pretty mediocre, at best, writer and I find the Twilight series to be poorly written in both a grammatical/literary and plot based way as well as problematic in general – but I will defend The Host until I’m blue in the face.

Anyway, the tea. I took it with milk: I couldn’t ever remember having Genmaicha with milk and I thought it’d be an interesting experience. It was, in a good way! It was like the roasty, toasty, creamy borderline “seaweed” type drink. I think maybe it’d be better with a less green genmaicha. Still, very good and comforting!

I needed comfort what with all the heartbreaking fics…

Hello.Kiki

I haven’t read the book, but I found the movie far more enjoyable than I was expecting. Perhaps I’ll add it to my reading list.

Roswell Strange

They left out all the best scenes int the movie; definitely read the book. I mean, you’ll have to bear through Meyers’ horrible writing – but I think it’s worth it.

I love when I see/hear people use “OTP” outside of my tumblr/AO3 bubble. Do you have any NOTP or OT3 match-ups? Hehe.

TeaLady441

I never would have considered reading The Host, tbh, because of all the terrible Twilight stuff I’ve encountered. Maybe I’ll have to rethink this.

I also had to take a second to figure out what the heck NOTP and OT3 are. :P I’m still noobish about all that. Hahah.

ohfancythat

I had to google all of these acronyms, haha.

I have the Host book but never read it because I can’t handle how un-feminist twilight is. Shitty female role model. Maybe The Host is better? Terrible writing aside, obviously.

Hesper June

I am in total agreement with you! I read The Host and thought “okay, so this lady CAN write”

TeaLady441

:P At least with my Kindle, no one will ever have to know if I read it!

Damnit I lost my tasting note! Fuck.

Anyway: made a cup for me and one for Tre when I got home from work today. He sweetened his, I had mine straight. I thought it really hit the spot tonight: lots of chocolate and just enough fruit. And he said he enjoyed his, so that was good too I guess.

Work today was ok I guess. We have a new manager and she’s pretty old (borderline elderly), and pretty conservative. The conservative nature of her personality would be ok, but the keyholders, myself included, are noticing it kind of treads on the line of racism. She’s been really rude to all employees but me and another older guy named Doug. Coincidentally, the two of us also happen to be the only other “white” employees other than herself.

Some of the other questionable things she’s done/said include referring to someone as a “little native girl” and complaining all the Indian employees stink and need to be spoken to about their hygiene (and no one else feels this way but her). So we’re keeping an eye on it, and if it progresses then I guess we’ll contact HR and formally file a complaint.

Sigh.

Courtney

Oh wow. That sounds like it should be interesting. :|

Tealizzy

Wow, that sounds really unprofessional. Good luck!

Oh, good luck.

Sipdown (166/170)!

Cold Brew! 15 hours? Glad to be done with this one – I was getting really sick of it. Thankfully, I parceled some up for someone in a swap and for my brother and that emptied off the in enough for me to finish it up in a slightly overleafed cold brew. Now my Superberry can go in the tin! Hooray!

Kind of medicinal citrus… Pretty happy to be rid of it.

We once had a good thing, but no longer.

drank Salted Caramel by DAVIDsTEA

In the timolino for work.

I really wanted to add milk to it but thought that maybe that would be a bad idea what with the salt in this. I’m glad I didn’t though; this was perfectly good on its own. Surprisingly though I kept thinking of Della Terra’s Eight Candles blend as I was drinking it: today this tasted spot on for that complete with marshmallow notes.

Odd.

I’m sure I made Salted Caramel though; I specifically remember how empty the tin was of this and how I decided I don’t plan to restock it. Eight Candles is in a bag…

Is it the tea that’s meh or the thought of writing a tea note? :)

Roswell Strange

Maybe a bit a both?

Profile

Bio

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
