Divine.

The scent of dry leaf conveys the sweetness of freshly baked goods: vanilla, citrus, cardamom, and the earthiness of black tea. More cardamom comes up in the steeping.

The flavour is a multilayering of loveliness: cardamom, orange and lemon peel, maple syrup, eggy custard, and the substance of black tea, with a smooth vanilla finish.

I haven’t yet tried the original by 52teas, after which, I suppose, this one is modelled, to put it delicately. I look forward to sampling that one.

That said, this one is pretty damn fine. A beautifully wrought tea with each of its elements beautifully balanced and each note coming through clearly.

This green rooibos tea came in a sampler.

It is just ok. I added a bit of cold water to the boiling before I steeped the tea to prevent the sour wood rooibos thing. As the tea began to steep, I got the slightest bit of caramel scent. Just as I got the slightest bit of caramel flavour in the first sip or two. After that, it was all green rooibos. Not impressive, but ok. I will finish my sample of this in the evenings when I want something plain and basic. Or perhaps I can add this to the rooibos teas I have which are far too sweet. At least it hasn’t been artificially sweetened to death. My preference is red rooibos, but perhaps one day a green rooibos will surprise me.

Oh my word.

This tea. Just glorious.

I am rather cautious about coffee-flavoured teas. Is it coffee? Is it tea? Identity crisis?

This tea, however, tastes like the best quality coffee ice cream with a drizzle of dulce de leche with a nice Kenyan black tea backup. Oh.

I am so incredibly partial to well done caramel teas.

Nothing else I can tell you really other than I am ordering a hundred grams of this today. And the sooner the better.

I love reading such loving reviews like this!

Wow, sounds like heaven!

Oh wow, this sounds wonderful!

Ordered 100 grams. Done.

Fjellrev

You sure don’t fool around. :D

Evol Ving Ness

I’ve had four cups of this tea, not all today, and each cup was glorious. The scent. The flavour. That lovely inhale of dark roast wrapped in caramel perfectly balanced in this tea. Yep, no commitment issues whatsoever. :)

sundaysipping

Oh this sounds lovely!

keychange

ah! I would be so tempted if it weren’t for the coffee!

Nineteen-02

We’re so glad you liked it, Evol Ving Ness! This is definitely one of our favourite blacks.

Evol Ving Ness

Yes, I like this one a lot. In my last cup, however, it seemed like the flavour of the leaf was already fading, and rather rapidly. I’ve only had it for four months, so it appears to have a rather short shelf life. I am drinking up and sharing rapidly then.

Nineteen-02

How was it stored, if I may ask? I find that if the seal isn’t air tight, it’ll lose a bit of its lustre. Learned that one the hard way a few times.

So. I opened my packet of this tea the day before yesterday. Since then, I have dipped into it about six times, steeping approximately ten minutes. Delicious banana-ness, a bit of cake-iness, a bit of nuttiness, and a bit of date. Superb.

It is sweet, but perfectly so. Not too much.

Another huge thing is that I do not detect any artificial aftertaste, which often happens in DT teas which contain fruit.

Be careful to only steep this in a teabag that you can then toss as this tea will gum up any tea apparatus you use for steeping.

The only thing I do not like about this tea is that it is heavy, and therefore, expensive. This may turn out to be an expensive habit.

Edit note. I’ve reduced my rating of this tea from 100 to 90 because of the artificial aftertaste of the last batch I steeped. Such a shame—this tisane was just about almost perfect.

I know, this tea is amaaaaazing! and I agree—no artificial taste! an expensive habit indeed, because I load up two tsp for about 12 oz.

Evol Ving Ness

On this last batch that I made today, I did detect a bit of artificial aftertaste. Luck of the draw, I suppose. I did have a large piece of date in my spoon of the dry leaf, and I understand that all the fruit in DT is treated with something or other that leaves an undesirable aftertaste.

Loving this tea base. Loving. it.
These lovely fat green leaves are quite enjoyable for several steepings.

Very citronella. I can’t seem to get past the cleaning product aspect of it, especially when it is just freshly steeped.

Then, it begins to smell great. But lemony of the lemongrass variety.

The rooibos calms down the citronella scent and taste as it cools a bit. Cooling a few minutes allows the flavours to mesh. The citronella mellows into lemon. The rooibos provides a bit of substance. The ginger begins to pop.

A pleasant evening tea. Next time I steep it, I’ll pour in the water, steep, and walk away until the lemony beauty begins. This is a tea that does far better after a bit of sitting.

The second steeping is quite good. Still lemony, but it is still the lemongrass lemony, not real lemon lemony.

Apple. Cinnamon. Hibiscus. And the slightest bit of coconut.

Sweet, but not too sweet. Tangy, but not too much.

It reminds me of hot apple cider with spices. Very autumnal. If it weren’t pitch dark out there—thanks daylight savings time—I’d consider going out to rake up some leaves, just to come back to a hot mug of this.

That’s hilarious. I often fantasize about doing seasonal things and getting myself all cold and happy-tired so that I can come in and enjoy my tea even more.

Evol Ving Ness

This patch of the city seems to have perfect yellow leaves that are just barely hanging onto the trees before they fall. So beautiful.

I totally appreciate apple teas just now. Especially ones like this.

Yesterday’s cup didn’t have much hibiscus as the liquor was barely tinted reddish tones.

drank Coconut Cumin Chai by 52teas

This beautiful blend is savoury, buttery, and grounding and so right for a difficult week.

It contains many of my favourite flavours—cumin, coconut, cardamom— and together they are a win. I detect a bit of a knotted bun/ baked good flavour. A wee bit of cardamom. All held together by this lovely tea base. I really really like this tea base.

I had this for the first time the other day with a rather short steep. Today, I steeped it a bit longer and find I am enjoying it even more. I am looking forward to the second steeping because this tea is disappearing quickly.

My second steeping gave up a solid coconut cumin taste without the other nuances of the first. Enjoyable nonetheless.

All in all, this is a lovely comforting cup of tea which I would like to have on hand more often.

Juicy. Fruity. Mango. Pineapple. Sweet. Tart. Fresh. Delicious.

Huge pieces of fruit. Why does it have to be so expensive? I bought a pre-packaged amount as they were on their way to discontinuing this tea and because the tea is all huge pieces of fruit, maybe, maybe, maybe I’ll get another cup or two from this packet.

That said, if this tea came back, I would probably pick some up from time to time because it really is good. David’s really needs good fresh-tasting herbals that taste like real something. This one does.

I noticed that the imitation flavours started coming up as the tea got cooler. Boo. My rating does not reflect that falseness coming up though.

Oops. Apparently I’ve already reviewed this one.

Fjellrev

Some of the fruit blends can be so crazily heavy, eh? When you’re at-home brewed tea amounts to like $3-4 a cup, something’s a little screwed up.

Evol Ving Ness

^Yes!

A mild tisane with gentle strains of well-balanced apple, cinnamon, and a bit of tartness from the cranberries and rosehips. Lovely. It could do with longer steeping to give it more body.

This tea arrived as a selection from my TOTM box with Tea Sparrow. A great choice. I had been craving something fresh and real tasting following my earlier experience today with the false and bitter flavours of Fantasy Island.

Note to self—-you do not actually need any more tea.

My real tea obsession began in February 2015.

Not, sadly, when I had been living and working in China, though I very much enjoyed sampling a variety of teas during my travels there as well. No, no, that would have been far too sensible.

I am a reformed coffee drinker. I still enjoy a long double espresso with a good quantity or milk or cream from time to time, but for now, tea is my thing. All day.

*note—this is way out of date, so if we are doing a swap and you are checking to see what I like and dislike, mostly never mind what you find below. One of these days, I will update this. In the meantime, check what I’ve been drinking and use your own judgement. I like all the teas. Well, I am open to trying all the teas.

I tend to drink black, green, or oolong tea in the morning to early afternoon. Rooibos or
Honeybush or herbal in the evening. And perhaps some sort of sleepy-type tea in the wee hours.

This year, I’ve been discovering flavoured teas, so it may look like that is all I drink although that would provide a false impression.

Not a big fan of chocolate or mint in teas, but I will try them and, from time to time, have been pleasantly surprised. Also, usually I dislike a prominent cinnamon flavour, if untempered with other things, in teas. Again, I say usually, because there are exceptions.

Also, please note that haven’t quite gotten into the habit of updating my tea cupboard on Steepster, and it is unlikely that I will do this on any kind of regular basis.

I drink my tea black and unsweetened. If there comes a rare moment that I add something to it, I will mention it.

Finally, while I thank large and successful tea companies for tantalizing and beckoning me to the world of tea, I prefer to support independent ventures with real people, real enthusiasm and commitment, and real dreams.

Currently, I am researching monthly tea subscriptions. Perhaps it will keep me out of tea shops.

And here is Shae’s rating scale— which I am using with permission, of course— which more or less describes the way I have been rating teas. I am going to make more of an effort to stay very close to these parameters now.

Rating Scale

1-20: By far, one of the worst teas I’ve tasted. I most certainly will not finish my cup and will likely “gift” the rest to my sweet husband who almost always enjoys the teas I dislike (and vice versa).

21-40: This tea is not good but if I mix it with another tea or find another steeping method I might be able to finish it.

41-60: This one is just okay. I might drink it again if someone were to give it to me, but I probably won’t be buying more for myself.

61-75: This is a consistently good tea. It’s reliable but not necessarily special.

76-90: This one is a notch above the rest and I would gladly enjoy a cup of it any day of the week. I’ll likely be keeping this in my cupboard, but it isn’t one of my all-time favorites.

91-95: One small change and this tea would be perfect. I’ll definitely have a stash of this in my kitchen if you come over for tea.

96-100: No words can describe this tea. It’s an experience, an aha moment. Closed eyes, wide smile, encompassing warmth. Absolutely incredible. Perfect.
