Came across this one the other day while rummaging for tea choices. The bottom of my packet of this was slightly opened as in unglued, not enough to lose any tea, but perhaps enough to lose flavour while this was being stored.

Steeped, this tea was ok. I steeped quickly because I suspect that the base would get astringent if neglected. Mild vanilla scent and flavour. Certainly not as good as my favourite vanilla black. But then, I am incredibly biased already. And certainly, even more so as I’ve just had my favourite vanilla black the other day.

I’ll wait a bit and try again before rating.

Beautiful tea. Super sweet and lovely. It reminds me very much of the honey black I was drinking the other day.

Vanilla and anonymous spice on a gentle black tea base. I say anonymous because the anise doesn’t announce itself, but thankfully, neither does the cinnamon. They both just blend into the vanilla in a pleasant spice fog. There’s also a vanilla cream thing going on here at the tail end of the sip which is very delicious. And the slightest bit of brandy or rum, as in eggnog. Or am I dreaming this up?

Just the thing in the afternoon when you want a mellower black tea before you begin to wind down for the day.

Oh, who am I kidding? I’ve been winding down pretty much from the time I woke up.

It’s been a really good tea day.

I was so craving this one today and was delighted that I was actually able to locate it. What I need to do is sit down and do some tea organizing, serious organizing.

Have I really become one of those people that puts aside time to sort and order my tea stash? By category? By age? By size? By how much I love it?

Maybe I need tea furniture now.

It has been so nice to putter around and do little to nothing. This tea is just divine. It is much better, if memory serves, with a glug of milk and bit of honey, but currently, that’s not on my nutrition agenda, so black it is. Still divine. Like a buttery sticky saffron honey bun stuffed with raisins.

“Have I really become one of those people that puts aside time to sort and order my tea stash? By category? By age? By size? By how much I love it?” ummm doesn’t everyone do this? Once you get into spreadsheets then you know you’re hard core. ;)

Evol Ving Ness

hahhaha, well, you know, Sil has been attempting to prod me in that direction.

Do some people not put time into organizing their tea collection? I have a spreadsheet and everything. It’s categorized by flavour (unflavoured separated from flavoured, strong scents of either type kept separate) and type (rooibos/herbal/decaf in one drawer, caffeinated in a drawer, and low quality bagged+large tins in a cupboard. Plus the puerh cakes all kept in a different room. It’s getting excessive…yet I’m not stopping.

Arby

And of course, the spreadsheet must have various tabs for organization!

There was a brief moment this morning when I thought my kettle had finally called it a day. Thankfully, it was just the electricity acting up again. And even more thankfully, the furnace continues to purr and clatter on. All good.

This is a remarkable tisane with the scent and taste of sunflower seeds and roasted peanuts. Very nutty and totally drinkable.

In my enthusiasm, I may have added a bit too much tea to my spoon of dry leaf this morning and may have steeped it just a tad beyond the perfect two minutes. I may have been channelling Daylon with the abundant leaf. Sadly, this cup is a bit more astringent than the usual divine smoothness. Bah! The scent and taste of natural vanilla remain a comfort.

Ironically, I made another Alishan with too little leaf and it barely altered the water. I also oveleafed it later and it was still to blurred for distinct flavor.

too blurred. My grammar and spelling have been abysmal.

My evening herbal tonight. Citrus and delicious.

I may add a bit of hibiscus to this to see how that influences the balance of flavours at some point.

Cold steep.

After the stevia blast of that last hot cup of this the other day, I prepared a cold steep to let it sit for a while. Much much better. Either this method subdues the stevia taste or less of it in the dry leaf managed to make its way into my spoon. Yes, this batch is creamy coconut and subtle fragrant white tea with none of the mouth bitterness of the previous batch. Not changing the rating based on the shock to my tastebuds of the first cup though.

Hello old friend. This tea is so like a warm hug after such an absence. You know how you drink a tea almost every day and then you get distracted by life and shiny new packages and generous samples from tea friends? Possibly that. For months. I’ve thought of this tea often, but in the scramble of urgencies, it was hard to track it down when the mood struck. And now it has reappeared just at the right moment. Vanilla deliciousness. I’ve got some dark chocolate handy to celebrate.

Solid blend. I am surprised actually as I was expecting some sort of false generic tasting chai blend with a gaddawful abundance of cinnamon, but it turns out that it is truly lovely.

Steeped up—nice. Hints of cherry and chocolate and coconut and a bit of gingery spice in a smooth black base. Slight catch in the throat at the back of the sip as you would expect from the ginger.

The second steep is also more of the same deliciousness, just a bit weaker.

The dry leaf is very chai-like, a bit tinier bits of spice and such than what I am used to. The black leaf is plentiful, thankfully, and then that is interspersed with what appears to be shredded coconut, spice, and possibly cocoa nibs. But who knows, really, as there is no ingredient list, as per usual for HI blends. Thankfully, I am not allergic to anything that I am aware of, but people who are might want to avoid HI in general.

Oh yeah, and Canadians might want to avoid HI teas too as I was charged in US funds by a company that is based in my city here in Canada. So yeah. Never again.

Too bad. This is a nice one.

Ugh. They didn’t warn you? uncool

Evol Ving Ness

Yes, I had posted about this previously and I will continue posting about this every time I drink these teas until I sip them all down. I had ordered the 12 Christmas teas last December. I guess I subconsciously didn’t want to be reminding of the smarminess of the transaction, so I haven’t been drinking or looking at them much. Now they are on my sip down agenda. Because new year, new teas—heh.

Indigobloom

I think I remember now. Sipdown races can be fun though :P

Evol Ving Ness

And perfect weather for it too. Totally tea weather. And fleece. And flannel.

Indigobloom

hehe yep. and its a white holiday season!

Another reason why HI sucks ass

Note to self—-you do not actually need any more tea.

My real tea obsession began in February 2015.

Not, sadly, when I had been living and working in China, though I very much enjoyed sampling a variety of teas during my travels there as well. No, no, that would have been far too sensible.

I am a reformed coffee drinker. I still enjoy a long double espresso with a good quantity or milk or cream from time to time, but for now, tea is my thing. All day.

*note—this is way out of date, so if we are doing a swap and you are checking to see what I like and dislike, mostly never mind what you find below. One of these days, I will update this. In the meantime, check what I’ve been drinking and use your own judgement. I like all the teas. Well, I am open to trying all the teas.

I tend to drink black, green, or oolong tea in the morning to early afternoon. Rooibos or
Honeybush or herbal in the evening. And perhaps some sort of sleepy-type tea in the wee hours.

This year, I’ve been discovering flavoured teas, so it may look like that is all I drink although that would provide a false impression.

Not a big fan of chocolate or mint in teas, but I will try them and, from time to time, have been pleasantly surprised. Also, usually I dislike a prominent cinnamon flavour, if untempered with other things, in teas. Again, I say usually, because there are exceptions.

Also, please note that haven’t quite gotten into the habit of updating my tea cupboard on Steepster, and it is unlikely that I will do this on any kind of regular basis.

I drink my tea black and unsweetened. If there comes a rare moment that I add something to it, I will mention it.

Finally, while I thank large and successful tea companies for tantalizing and beckoning me to the world of tea, I prefer to support independent ventures with real people, real enthusiasm and commitment, and real dreams.

Currently, I am researching monthly tea subscriptions. Perhaps it will keep me out of tea shops.

And here is Shae’s rating scale— which I am using with permission, of course— which more or less describes the way I have been rating teas. I am going to make more of an effort to stay very close to these parameters now.

Rating Scale

1-20: By far, one of the worst teas I’ve tasted. I most certainly will not finish my cup and will likely “gift” the rest to my sweet husband who almost always enjoys the teas I dislike (and vice versa).

21-40: This tea is not good but if I mix it with another tea or find another steeping method I might be able to finish it.

41-60: This one is just okay. I might drink it again if someone were to give it to me, but I probably won’t be buying more for myself.

61-75: This is a consistently good tea. It’s reliable but not necessarily special.

76-90: This one is a notch above the rest and I would gladly enjoy a cup of it any day of the week. I’ll likely be keeping this in my cupboard, but it isn’t one of my all-time favorites.

91-95: One small change and this tea would be perfect. I’ll definitely have a stash of this in my kitchen if you come over for tea.

96-100: No words can describe this tea. It’s an experience, an aha moment. Closed eyes, wide smile, encompassing warmth. Absolutely incredible. Perfect.

Mostly, but not always, Toronto, Canada.
