I like this one more and more each time I drink it. It just defines oolong to me. Will probably order more once my sample’s through.

Nothing particularly mindblowing, but a very comforting tea.

My second Rishi tea and my first wuyi oolong. This tastes very strongly of roasted barley to me. I can taste a bit of the raisin sugar flavor in the aftertaste, but not elsewhere. Very earthy and roasty, which is how I like my oolongs. This isn’t wowing me, though.

drank Pu-erh Blood Orange by Rishi Tea

Not sure why, but I can taste more pu-erh in this today than I could before. The scent of the dry leaves it still to die for; I had planned to drink another black tea once I got to work, but I opened my bag and the smell of this screamed “drink me!” I like that the citrus is a bit more muted this time.

Ricky

Haha, exact same thing happened to me with my Vanilla Mint Pu-erh. The first day it was incredibly minty / sweet. A few days later I was craving it for some reason and I was hit with pu-erh instead.

Cofftea

Still scares me…

drank Pu-erh Blood Orange by Rishi Tea
355 tasting notes

My first pu-erh experience, and I’m kind of underwhelmed. This is really good – the blood orange taste is definitely prominent, and I love blood orange – but I can’t really taste pu-erh. I’m not sure exactly what it should taste like, but I was expecting a very heavy, earthy taste. Right now I taste a bit of that at the very end of my sip, but mostly just blood orange and citrus.

It does taste pretty darn good, though. Just tastes more like a flavored black tea than anything else.

takgoti

Hrm. I’ve had blood orange pu-erh before [from Samovar] and if it’s balanced correctly you should definitely be getting some earthiness from it. All I can think of is to ask how long you’re steeping it for? Pu-erh is near impossible oversteep. It might be worth trying to let it sit for 8 minutes or so?

If that doesn’t work, at least it tastes good overall!

Katie Alberry

Definitely try steeping it much longer, I tend to keep mine steeping for up to 7 minutes or so sometimes. If that still doesn’t do it for you try Teas Etc’s Pu-erh Tuo Cha. They come in cute little individually wrapped nests and taste wonderful. A nice full bodied earthy tea. If you visit Samovar or buy some teas online, try Maiden’s Ecstasy (hard to go wrong with that one).

Bethany

Thanks for the recommendation, Katie. Maiden’s Ecstasy (and Samovar on the whole) has been on my to try list for awhile now. Hoping to make an order soon.

I’ll try steeping longer next time. Rishi recommends 5-6 minutes, so I did 5:30 on this steep.

Katie Alberry

Samovar is amazing. If you’re ever visiting San Francisco you’ll have to make a point to check out the different locations. If you like Oolongs the Four Seasons Oolong is also great. For the pu-erh, also make sure the water is boiling, it will make a difference. Enjoy!

@Bethany Looking forward to future logs!

drank Orange Blossom by Rishi Tea

Haven’t been able to have near as much tea as I wanted today and now that I have time, for some reason I wanted this. Smells very lemony when dry and more tangerine + lemon when brewed up but the taste is pretty much lemongrass. The edge has been taken off by the osthmanthus and citrus, which are more of a feeling to me tonight than an actual taste. Not a delicate tea but fresh and I’m enjoying the citrus-ness.

I’m a sucker for anything orange. So just based on the name I knew I had to get this one. Sadly, I’m a bit brain dead tonight so I can’t really pick out lots of goodies from the dry leaf. But it smells fun.

Post-pouring, I can smell the lemongrass but I can also smell something that reminds me of my perfume (which has notes of things like Bergamot, Grapefruit, Mandarin and Orange – it’s yummy). Sipping is… wow. The front taste is definitely the lemongrass but it’s quickly followed by some nicely juicy and dark citrus tastes. And I say ‘dark’ because it’s a pretty concentrated flavor. The lemongrass keeps a nice, fluffy top note going on and (I’m thinking) the osthmanthus (or perhaps the lemon myrtle since I don’t know what that tastes likes) gives it a sweet end note, with the citrus hitting in the late middle. It’s almost borderline too phlegm-producing herbal with the strong citrus but that lemongrass saves it and as it cools, that heavy citrus lightens up to a more clementine taste.

This is really actually very good. Light but flavorful, good citrus flavors (that don’t remind me of Froot Loops – always a plus) and pretty darn refreshing. I think this would probably be pretty summery and awesome as an iced tea. This is an herbal I’d be happy to add in my rotation for nights that I need tea but it’s too late to have caffeine.

This sounds like something I would like. I do love clementines.

What perfume do you use? I feel like we’ve had this discussion before.

teaplz

Hah! I am not a fan of citrus fruits sometimes, but this does taste yummy. And yay, the Fruity Pebbles is not present!

Auggy

I use Blu Mediterraneo’s Arancia Di Capri. I love it so much. When I first tried it, I seriously called the husband to tell him how yummy I smelled. It’s also got a little caramel and musk in it making it like a dessert with a rich orange caramel-like sauce.
And we shall see how you two like this one… :D

Hyrulehippie

Both this beverage and your perfume sound delicious.

Some music pleasantly complements a particular activity like marching, dancing or running. Some music fades nicely into the background, setting the mood for a nice conversation.

But some music requires your whole attention. Sometimes it intrudes: the 5th movement of The Firebird nearly killed my while driving to Philadelphia. Sometimes it sulks: I was initially disappointed with Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill Live In Seattle because I didn’t hear the guitar at all. Then I stood right in front of the speakers and it made sense…

Um, about the tea, this tea is like Live In Seattle. If you’re not paying total attention it tastes like warm tap water. It will not complement any food. But if you pay very close attention, there are a whole variety of flavors just on the edge of perception. There are wisps of grass and wet leaves and there is the presence of flowers (it is jasmine tea after all).

Basically, this tea is like potpourri in foggy redwoods. So it complements the weather in Northern California at the moment. Maybe it will play nice with something after all.

drank Sencha Yuzu by Rishi Tea
41 tasting notes

So, it took me a few cups to decide, but I’m really kind of digging this tea.

For some reason they don’t really explain on the website, but this is a Ryokucha, which apparently means it is blended with machta powder in addition to green tea leaves. This makes the tea a bit stronger and, um, green-er, preventing the citrusy yuzu from completely overpowering everything else.

The only problem is the packet is rather small (50g) and so the recommended preparation instructions (1 Tbsp tea / cup) mean that I’m almost running out already!

Cofftea

A steeped version of yuzu matcha? Yum! I hope 52teas catches that;)

takgoti

Your entry on this has me convinced that Samovar and Rishi source from some of the same places. I wouldn’t be surprised if these are the same teas. I know that Samovar blends the majority of their stuff in house, but sometimes they send me things that come in the original packaging [really only Japanese – matcha, fukamushi sencha, and this one] and clearly those haven’t been messed with. This particular one was labeled yuzu ryokucha, is called yuzu sencha on their website, but looks like ryokucha to me.

mlc

Cofftea, in case I wasn’t clear above, this has both matcha and regular sencha leaves in it.

takgoti, I’ve not seen the Samovar stuff, but it’s entirely possible that you’re right. This came in a brown packet (somewhat different-looking and containing less tea than the other teas in my Rishi order) with a Rishi sticker labeled “Yuzucha” on one side and some unbranded sticker labeled “Yuzu Ryokucha 50g net” on the other.

Cofftea

@mlc, Yeah I know, but if it’s like mecha when you decant it, the liquor is not completely translucent- there are small particles floating in it.

takgoti

@Cofftea Well, ryokucha by definition contains matcha, sencha, and toasted rice so if it were ryokucha then yeah, there should be small particles in it from the matcha that’s in it. In fact, that’s likely to happen with most japanese teas since the leaves are delicate and likely to be broken up either in the processing or in transit [especially depending on the type of sencha]. Just because something’s got some ground up leaf in it doesn’t equate to matcha, though. Fukamushi sencha is more broken up because of the processing so there might be small particles in it – but it isn’t matcha, really. High quality matcha powder is grown differently.

@mlc I had to go grab my packet to look at it and originally thought that the little brown things were rice, but on closer inspection in mine it looks like it’s actually grated yuzu rind. So I guess that our respective vendors were correct in switching this to sencha in their listings. The leaves also look like more of an asamushi sencha [though I can’t confirm this]. Sorry, I’m still new-ish to the Japanese green tea game and I’m kind of nerding out on information. I had to share.

mlc

Aha. According to Wikipedia, Ryokucha is just Japanese for “green tea.”

takgoti

Pweh, no, you’re right. Sorry, I’ve got Samovar on the brain. That’s what their ryokucha is. I don’t think that extends to the general tea world [I think there’s another name for genmaicha with matcha, but I’m not familiar with it] so that’s my bad. The rest of the information should be legit, though. So that explains why Samovar changed their name [to avoid confusion]. I’m not sure why Rishi did, except to say that maybe it’s for specificity sake.

Wow, apparently I am the first person on Steepster to rate this tea.

So: very light and fruity. I think I’m still feeling the caffeine from the chai 10 hours ago, so this was a nice nighttime tea. Perhaps not the most stunning or spectacular thing in the world, but quite drinkable and pretty much exactly what I wanted from a lemongrass blend.

I don’t normally have milk in the house, and I don’t normally put milk in my tea.

But I made a recipe the other day that called for some milk, so when this packet of tea came, I figured that this was as good a way as any to use up some of the leftovers.

I followed the directions on the package to steep the tea in boiling water and milk over the stove. The flavor is very good, and the milk makes it very rich and appropriate for the weather we’re having (even though I’ve not actually been outside today except to get the package of tea from UPS). I think that the package directions make it a bit too strong, though, possibly because the tea starts steeping before the water is boiling and continues steeping while stirring in the sugar. So next time I will try it with a bit less tea and steeping for a bit less time, and perhaps I will like it better.

A very flowery oolong – if you like that sort of thing! If I’m in the mood for something floral… osthmanthus is the one for me. And the oolong base is good, and very crisp.

However… as far as osthmanthus goes… I prefer the Osthmanthus Silver Needle to the Osthmanthus Huang Guan Yin.

Osthmanthus Huang Guan Yin: Good. Osthmanthus Silver Needle: AWESOME.

Ohhhhhh YuzuCha… I needed a Japanese Green. This was the right choice.

I hate to admit it, but I had no idea “yuzu” existed before I experienced this tea. But now I’d really like to see one for myself! I hate having an ingredient in something, that I am unable to acquire and try on it’s own, for the sake of flavour comparison.

Anyways… the tea is lovely. A glorious sencha, and the yuzu adds a flavour that’s… citrusy? I’m not sure citrusy is the right description. It adds a very pleasant sweet yet tangy note to the yummy vegetal profile natural to this sencha.

I enjoy it on it’s own but… it would be WONDERFUL PAIRED WITH A BAKED FISH methinks! :)

So…what’s a yuzu?

Little Yellow Teapot

Yuzu! Bless you! (sounded like a sneeze to me…)

Cofftea

@ Jillian, it’s an Asian citrus fruit. Glad I looked it up, I was thinking ouzo. LOL! No ouzo tea.:( Here’s an yuzo oolong you updated info on back in Sept. Looks yummy! http://steepster.com/teas/naivetea/4480-yuzu-oolong

Cofftea

I love the pairing suggestion, do you cook/bake w/ tea as well?

Oh Cha!

Yes!! Lots of cooking and baking with tea… Culinary arts are my hobby :)

Cofftea

Going to Fava Tea Co. today. They have tea hard candy. Maybe that’ll help get rid of my cough.

Fred

I’ve always wanted to try the Yuzu Sencha from Rishi but just never wanted to fork over the money for it. Now Wegmans stopped carrying that version of Rishi. Sigh….

For having so many roses in this, this is surprisingly minty, though not overwhelmingly so. It’s pretty, just like the leaves. Smells minty but soft.

Taste-wise, it’s soft and a little minty and a little floral. Not overly complex but things blend nicely and there’s a good fresh mint flavor left in my mouth after each sip. I definitely prefer this softer mint flavor than something that is so overwhelmingly mint. I enjoy the softness created by the jasmine and rose (though I can pick out the rose a little more but maybe that’s only because I can see the roses in the dry leaf). Sometimes I get tartness from things with mint in it – like an aftertaste of cooked greens. But this one doesn’t have that and I appreciate that.

Shared some with the husband – he’s been craving mint lately – and he gives it “a high 4, maybe even a 5” star rating (of 5) saying that it’s smooth with a minty, flowery smell and a nice, creamy mint taste.

This has SO many flavors in one. Interesting! I’m kind of curious how sweet and mint go together. I guess I’ll have to try the Vanilla Mint in the GM box to find out!

Auggy

Even though there are lots of things put into this, the florals all combine into one big ole taste that gives a softness that verges on creamy and the mint gives a nice “whuaa” feeling… and honestly, not tasting all that much tea-ness in it. I think it is there because the floral and mint aren’t that overpowering but I just don’t have enough experience with whites to pick it out. But yeah, lots of flavors!

Jillian

Is ‘whuaa’ a new official tea tasting term? ;)

Auggy

Haha! I seriously spent at least three minutes trying to figure out how to spell that minty feeling I get in my mouth – like I’m emanating mint tinglies. That’s as close as I could get (and the hubby was looking at me like I was nuts, so I had to stop).

takgoti

I’m not usually a huge fan of rose tea, but I think I could get on board with this one because of the mint. Picture’s gorgeous, too. [Because that’s important.]

Also, I love how this has evolved into Auggy + sometimes DH’s thoughts.

First cold brewed tea of the year. I always prefer my white tea cold rather than hot. This particular tea retains it’s sweet taste cold or hot. But cold there seems to be a sort of melon flavor, as opposed to hot which is somewhat nectar/honey flavored.
