My grandma bought me a magic bullet for christmas so I could make matcha smoothies :) I made a strawberry one today with some milk and ice. Gosh it was sooo good. It kinda reminded me of that strawberry sugar syrup you put in milk as a kid. This matcha is one of my favorites its such a delicious strawberry. To me its not a real strawberry taste but its not to fake that I don’t like it. It more of a candy strawberry which is just fine and yummy for me.
I’m not rating this just yet. I need to experiment!
The raspberry really shines here. It’s tart and very yummy, just like a truffle! However, I wish the chocolate note was stronger as I’m really not getting much at all. It’s more like the inside of a truffle, you know that pink creamy filling? that is it exactly, but without the chocolate coating!
Also, there is a touch of that fake chemical taste I dislike. Not enough to put me off, but I don’t think I’ll order this again unless I can find the sweet spot.
For this cup, I tried making it as a plain matcha and it was just ok. Then I added a splash of milk and oh yes that was much better. Oh and 1/2tsp sugar. Yep, not bad at all. My cup was drained fast I tell ya!
Based on my initial impression, I’d rate this an 82. Will report back when I’ve done the rounds :)
This is good, this is very good. I have no idea of the flavouring level or grade though since I didn’t actually order this one. I’m assuming it’s delicate though, since I get more matcha than anything. I am happy to have made it’s acquaintance. :) Thank You Red Leaf!
the grade should be on the label of the package – the white label can be peeled off to put on your own tin if you’ve transferred it to another storage container :)
It actually just says “Goji Berry Matcha” and nothing else. . . Weird.
I’m thinking starter grade because it’s not as green as the cheesecake one I bought.
Mmmm. . . I love matcha. I have to admit that with unflavoured matchas I have to add a small amount of agave nectar. I can’t do a straight green tea. I’m sure I’ll get there eventually. For now, milk and sweetener and it makes my day!
I have only had one straight matcha before and I couldn’t even finish the cup. I don’t know whether this is just a higher quality one or if my taste buds have just evolved. I should add that this wasn’t even one I had ordered, my order must’ve been mixed with another as I received 4 teas I would have never thought twice about before. And being the amazingly wonderful company that they are, Red Leaf has allowed me to keep these to tide me over until my order arrives!
Back to the tea. . .
When I whisked it up it came out a rich dark green, like the colour of peas! It tastes buttery and vegetal and just heavenly, not like the bitter seaweed I remember from the other company. Very happy this tea found me.
This is such a treat for me that I’ve been holding back on indulging… not wanting to let it become less special. Maybe I need to set up a rotation schedule, so that I give all my matchas equal love.
Also, I really like that there are no resteeps with matcha. No guilt! I mean, it’s one of those things that I really enjoy about tea, but sometimes it’s nice not to, ya know?
Yeah, I sometimes will pick a lower quality tea that I know I can only get 1-2 steeps out over a finer one. I have tried storing them for later, but it never tastes as good.
I made another smoothie today, and I daresay, the caramel one from a few days ago was much better!
Ugh…sound sooo good. No money. Boo. (It’ll be worth it in a month when I’m at the Doctor Who convention in LA celebrating the show’s 50th anniversary and meeting lots of people, some of whom I know already, and some I don’t…yet.)
There are a few, actually, but yes. Toronto sometimes has things, there is one in November on Long Island and that is probably closest to you. Hven’t been to that one yet, but now that my brother is in Brooklyn, we might go there instead of the one in Chicago where he used to live, even though Brooklyn and Ronkonkoma are about an hour away from each other. There is one in Orlando around Halloween and there is a sci f sea cruise that runs once a year too.
Ohhhh man is this ever TASTY!
I bought the Royal grade with distinctive flavouring and it is perfect. I may go with robust next time just to see what the difference is and for a change. and yes there will be a next time, size large.
I really taste the almond/marzipan. It isn’t exactly nutty though, definitely more on the almond paste, dessert side. This time, I tried it with and without a splash of milk, and I like it both ways. With the added dairy, it’s even more treat like so if you want to push it to that place, I recommend it.
Also, I got an odd astringency from the tea. It was a touch sour! Not sure if that was the base or the flavouring, or perhaps a combination of both.
Either way, I am in love. What’s that Beatles song? All you need is love…
I miss being a regular here!! sighs. But I do try to read reviews when I can. Not all of them, cuz I’d have to unfollow some people if I had any hope in that, and I’d really rather not do that…
anyhow, I made myself a smoothie today, and it was ahhhmazing! Fresh banana, strawberry, milk, and matcha… well that = a big glass of YUM!! I really like the contrast of strawberry to coffee flavour. So good. I’m kinda glad this doesn’t go over very well as a hot brew now :P
Water bottle method… ahhhhhmazing!
I swear, it’s just like coffee icecream! Oh YUM.
See, for someone whose body banned them from coffee, this is a deliriously happy moment!!
It’s a little creamy, which I was not expecting but espresso can have milk in it, right? I always thought it was served black…
Btw, no sugar required. It is perfect all on it’s own. Thank you Red Leaf for your superb creations!!
Now I need to try this again as a hot cup…
Espresso matcha, sour mango, banana, apple, and wheatgrass powder equals YUM. Oh right and a quarter cup of milk. Dairy that is, I ran outta almond. And a handful of frozen blueberries for good measure. Now this combo certainly is not for everyone but for some reason it really blew my green socks off (ref to sexy tea!). I think it was the contrast in flavours that I loved. Tart fruity base against the mocha like coffee… ummmm yes please!
I wonder if it will do well in all smoothies or just mango ones. The flavour really shines through, not like in other types where I add double and can have trouble identifying any notes at all.or perhaps it needed to settle after I transferred my supply to a tin… shrugs.
Who knows? Now I’m seriously looking forward to experimenting.
Eeep. I didn’t get much flavour from this at all. Or rather… it was more like what I expected the egg nog to taste like, only milder.
I was hoping to find a coffee replacement, as I really miss the flavour. Oh well, I still need to try water bottle style, or maybe I just had a bad cup.
(you know how sometimes a cup is “off” but then next time it’s amazing?)
Hrm. Not giving up on you Espresso matcha! I’ll fight for ya :)
This smells and tastes just like a watermelon jolly rancher, and let me say I love watermelon jolly ranchers! I ordered starter grade matcha with delicate flavor. The flavor is pretty nice and you can still taste the earthiness of the matcha. I really enjoy how the sweetness and earthiness come together for a very balanced flavorful drink. I would also like to note that I prefer drinking matcha cold, I just mix with a little bit of water until it has dissolved then add ice and some more water. It is delicious this way, and I also could not think of having hot watermelon matcha. This is my favorite go to morning drink, I often open at work and have to be there at 4:45 in the morning, this gives me a great pick me up and energizes me for work, and boy do I need it. I have yet to sweeten this, but would love to know what sugar or rock sugar does to the flavor profile, I would really have to lose the earthiness of the drink, and too much sugar could end up making this taste like kool-aid which I would not want either. Looking forward to ordering this matcha again soon!
Sipdown on this one as well since the last little bit of this is on it’s way out to a friend. I had a last cup of this straight since this is usually one of those matcha that i add to my coffee matcha to make it the sort of mocha matcha i want red leaf’s mocha matcha to be. On it’s own it’s still quite good but it will always be a matcha i add to other concoctions rather than one that i drink on my own. Still though, that’s likely reason enough to rotate it in!
Backlogging another review on Red Leaf’s matcha – Belgium Chocolate
My matcha was composed of the following:
Size : Small
Matcha Quality: Starter (Basic Grade)
Flavor: Robust
This matcha was picked up in part because I wanted to see how the coffee and chocolate matcha would work compared to the mocha matcha. I also thought that the chocolate might be a good one for adding to other matcha to make smoothies like chocolate strawberry!
Oh man what can I say about this matcha? It’s really tasty! Added to my morning smoothie, it tastes like a chocolate milkshake which is just perfect for me. The chocolate doesn’t taste like cocoa, nor does it have that bitter taste that some chocolates have. Instead it’s a delight of silky chocolate sweet goodness.
I have to say, that I usually add this matcha to my other matchas to help enhance or bring out some of the other flavours in my smoothies (cookies n’ cream; mocha etc..) That being said, it’s also a delight to drink on its own. I would recommend this matcha to anyone looking for a nice chocolatey matcha to mix into things. This might even make a good addition to some sort of baked good – the possibilities are there!

Followup from the original mishap regarding this tea. Robert was so incredibly generous and resent me two packets of this so I could see if I still get the heavy chemical scent and taste from it, both in the regular and royal base. Both are also the same level of flavouring that I had originally ordered.
The good news is it isn’t as heavy on the chemicals as the original one I received, like maybe 20% less chemical, so maybe it’s just me. But since they’re better, I’m definitely going to be drinking them up!
By the way, this is my first time trying the royal grade and I can’t get over the difference! It’s so much silkier and the colour is even more vibrant. I think paying the extra $4 would be worth it.
While I really appreciate Red Leaf’s effort of trying to create a Macadamia blend, this is just not for me (not re-purchasable in my opinion). But hey, it’s no loss. The library of flavours is insane. Just keep exploring and one will find more gems out there (such as French Vanilla and Caramel).
Thank you for the info on upgrading to Royal. I have wondered if It is worth it to upgrade. Now I think I will give it a try.
Sorry in advance for the negative review. I know it won’t be popular and I don’t even know what to make of this. I ordered this the other month as basic grade and robust flavour. As soon as I opened the packet, it smelled extremely strongly of bitter chemicals. Nothing even remotely close to macadamia nuts, or food for that matter. So I thought maybe it needed to just settle for a bit.
I’ve had it on and off and have practically forced myself to drink it. No matter how I prepare it, it tastes like a combination of indescribable chemicals, and the very little food-like taste I get is like rotten nuts. I’m not sure if it’s just me, the flavouring is better as distinctive, or I got a bad batch?
Either way, I think I’m about 1/3 through my small packet of it. Oh well.
Definitely! I have the almond matcha and even though I don’t log it every time, I am having it one or two times a day. LOL! It is also robust flavor level and basic grade. I feel sure they will be very helpful!
Hmm, I guess it’s worth a shot. I always feel bad bothering people! But perhaps what I’m doing, forcing myself to drink it, may not be the best idea.
That’s good to know about the almond in robust flavour. I don’t see why more flavouring should result in such a strong chemical odour/taste that I’m getting with mine.
Yes – definitely let them know about this, and I suspect that they will offer you a free new packet of it. It seems that sometimes things go a bit wrong with their flavourings – every now and then someone seems to get a matcha that tastes awful. (They sent me a coupon for a free cheesecake matcha when the one I received barely had any flavour. I admittedly haven’t gotten to drinking it yet as I like cold matcha lattes, and it’s the wrong time of year for that, but I’m hoping the second pouch is better!)
I never thought of using my magic bullet for this purpose…hmm…index finger tapping head in a contemplating sort of way.
It works so well. And if you don’t add a lot of ice you get so much foam!
