It’s the second black matcha I’ve tried. The first was a Darjeeling/Assam blend with a robust, almost chocolaty flavor with a wonderful texture. This reminded me of a mid-grade, CTC-cut Nilgiri on smell – bitter forefront that transitioned into a floral fragrance. The result after whisking was a thickly-frothed, even-brown liquor with a spectacular aroma. The true beauty of this was in the texture. If the drinker had no taste buds, they’d still find pleasure in the velvety/silky delivery.

Preparation
I’m excited to dive into the world of Red Leaf’s flavored matchas! I sort of chose vanilla at random because there were so many that sounded good, and I’d never tried a flavored matcha before so I wasn’t sure what would go well with the pure green tea flavor of standard matchas. That seems like it would be a beast to try and flavor! But Red Leaf does it well, from what I hear.
I love a good vanilla flavoring, but this one is more subtle than most – more of a hint in the background than a loud presence. It adds a smooth sweetness compared to other unflavored matchas I have. As for the matcha itself, it’s quite delicious. A great example of matcha in general, without the astringency that’s put me off matcha before. You can tell they’ve used high quality green tea for this.
As for the whole presentation: the shipping is quick (and free if you order a 60g pack), and the tea comes in a foil bag that isn’t resealable, so have a small tin at the ready to transfer it over. Once I emptied mine into a tin I shook a bit of water into the packet just to make sure I got all the matcha-y goodness available to me.
I’m glad to have this in my cupboard and excited to try their other flavors! Maybe chocolate next?
that kinda reminds me of the Teaopia packages, if you get 50g (like I usually do) they come in paper bags, with the foldup seal.
The matcha has a slightly darker color due to the acai powder. What I like about this tea is that there are no flavorings, sugars or odd additives. The acai powder is pure, ground acai berries. This tea has more of a matcha taste than an acai taste. There is only just a hint of acai. It’s not sweet and the acai doesn’t make the matcha taste bitter. This is a great way to have matcha, but with additional health benefits from the added acai powder. If you’re looking for something sweet or fruity tasting, this isn’t the tea for you. However, if you love matcha and the taste of pure matcha. you will love this tea.
Okay…I’m drinking this one JUST FOR Azzrian – she wanted to know about Red Leaf’s White matcha…well, I have tried this before…see previous notes. It’s been a while…TOO LONG, actually. I really LOVE LOVE LOVE this White Matcha. I still think tea companies need to do more White Matcha! C’mon!!!! Please?
My last matcha for today…will pick up again on Monday with the matcha…
BUT…
I have been WAITING for a white matcha!! I HAVE to try this NOW!!!!!
This is a light brown/grey in color powder-wise…once mixed with water it’s a murky brown in color.
DRY…this smells amazing! Pure! Once mixed with water it doesn’t really have a distinct aroma.
As I sip all I can think about is how pure this is and how mouth watering and true to the white tea this is…it’s amazing!
The flavor is wonderful! Since I haven’t seen other white matchas or tried them yet and because I am enjoying this one so much I am going to rate it at 100. That could change – but for now it sticks!
ATTN TEA WORLD – Bring out MORE White Matcha, will you!?
Is this the same as the white rhino matcha you’ve tried? As white tea lowers body temp, this would make a great matcha lemonade!
But yes…I like this one better than the Rhino…it is VERY different from the Rhino tho…this was juicy and sweet and the Rhino was grassy and more on the bitter side.
Awwwww, yea! This is the stuff!
Butttery-goodness! :)
And yes…that’s Butttery with 3 T’s!
This is a little grayer in color than the other matcha’s I have had today!
I really like this tho! It’s just enough of every thing you would want in a matcha, I suppose.
Royal?
Well, I’ll chalk this up as my tribute to the Royal Wedding Celebrations today – since I don’t have any of Twinings’ Commemorative Royal Wedding tea…this will have to do and it’s doing just fine and dandy!
If you know of anyone who is into RAW Foods – tell them about this Noni Matcha!
It is 100% raw, pure and organic.
Dry – the first thing that came to mind was Noni flavored Scones!
After mixing up it smells like fruit and veggies with matcha!
This is pretty good. It’s a tad tart but unique and super healthy! It’s a nice change-up from your plain-jane matcha! :)
Azzrian…if I bounce off the walls later – it’s YOUR Fault! LOL :)
It’s a MATCHA-Thon, folks! Who’s IN?
Here’s my first Matcha of my matcha-thon.
It’s been a while since my last sip of this. I usually do a double shot of this…I can taste the chocolate more-so in the after taste – it’s still true green tea//matcha taste upfront…first and foremost.
Haha same to ya woman! I just had my first for the marathon too! Have to go get daughter from work soon but will do round 2 upon my return! :)
Haha lucky for me perhaps or unlucky I only have a handful of matcha to try! HAHA how many are you down or ummm UP for? LOL
I’ll do as many as I can in the next 3 hours :)
BTW…I’m sending you the rest of the B.Chocolate, here, and will send you the Organic one I am about to post :) Found out I had way more than I thought I did :)
This is a VERY good Matcha! It isn’t overly chocolate-E but it is TASTY. I am going to play around with it more but first taste was good!
Ugh. I hate you. Ya know, in a “not really, you’re a great friend… I’m just REALLY jealous right now” way LOL. <3 The up side of this is I’m hoping you’ll try all the weird ones I’m too scared to first lol. I’m wondering if their ginger is the same as AoT’s. (which I have now and am almost out of.) Frank better get going, RL is beating him at his own game lol. :)
I’m certain it is different from Domo’s Chocolate Matcha…I think Domo’s is more chocolate-E and smooth but Red Leaf is more Matcha-E if that makes sense LOL
Oh hm… part of my 1st post got deleted too. (probably due to my attempt at a heart). I was trying to say I wonder if RL’s ginger matcha is the same as AoT’s.
Sil pushed me over the edge to jump in with a matcha BUT I wasn’t done with my Black Tea Craving…so…here’s my entry!
RLT’s Black Matcha Organic! I’ve reviewed this one before but it’s been a while. See previous notes. I think I will send some of this to Azzrian next :)
OMG! OMG! OMG! Red Leaf Tea added more matchas! Whooooooo! Yeah! I receive some in the shipment I just received and I can wait to try them! This was the first one on tap and I chose it at random. Sure this smells and tastes like black tea but I’m excited about this one mostly because of how strong the black tea flavor is in it! It’s wonderful! I have a feeling this won’t last long in my stash!
You already knew I’d be stalking you, right? LOL I’m looking forward to living vicariously thru you!:)
