I’ve been so busy the last few days with Thanksgiving prep work so when I took my first sip of this tea I thought that perhaps I had accidentally made an oolong rather than the green tea I had intended. After double checking I realized that I had in fact made a cup of Mao Jian. This tea has a really nice floral flavor that I don’t typically expect in a green, but it still has a subtle vegetal flavor that marks it as such. It has a wonderful sweet, almost fruity flavor, that I notice towards the end of each sip. This wasn’t at all what I was expecting, but it such a wonderful tea.

There are several things that I really like about this tea, even if I wasn’t completely satisfied with the flavor. I love that it is an organically grown, fair trade and usda certified organic tea. At $9.50 for 4 oz it makes an attractive option for an everyday tea and priced well below the competition. I have an organic and fair trade certified tea that is similar which costs me double the price for a similar quality tea.

While I certainly like the price, I wouldn’t order this again to drink hot. It had a twinge of bitterness I kept finding at the end of each sip that I didn’t care for the; however, I think it is a great and inexpensive option for iced tea using a cold steeping process. Since we’ve had a bit of a heatwave lately in Wisconsin (it’s been in the mid 50s) I used my remaining sample to make a large pitcher of iced tea and the bitterness that kept me from being completely satisfied was no where to be found. I found the tea to have a nice balance of flavor without being overdone. I could definitely see myself reordering this over the summer for iced tea.
